In this episode of the Scrap Metal Replica i show how to forge a replica of the archaeological find exhibited in Salisbury museum (UK). This knife is very unique because of the double serpent damascus pattern. To forge it I used wrought iron, hearth steel, old steel plow, T-55 cannon and modern medium carbon steel.

Insane work as always! Because on the internet it looks effortless all the time i find it important to also show failure and hardships in ones creation to show outsiders how much skill and experience is rly involved in a craft.

Beautiful work. I know the pain of something that took so much work suddently failing at the end- it's not fun. But it always pushes one to try again, and it's very nice to see the second attempt succeeded. I've watched many videos of a roadside blacksmith in southeast Asia (KK Daily), who only heats and quenches the very edge of his blades, rather that immersing the whole thing as is common here in NA and Europe these days- perhaps it would be worth trying that next time to maybe avoid the stresses that cause cracks like you had. I expect it should as the body of a blade should support the edge sufficiently during the quenching, and I suspect it is the violent movement of the large portion of the blade that causes edge cracks in the first place.

Some of the cracks were visible before quenching, in my opinion it was a result of too high temperature during forging of the hearth steel bloom. I decided to finish this knife to see if my asssuptions about technology of forging of this pattern were correct. The selective quenching you mentioned works when you have item forge out of one piece of material, when you have pattern-welding, the whole item should be quenched to get better contrast in the pattern.

Man, i love your wrought iron knife and weapons work sooo much. Your forge welds always seem to go so smooth too. Can i buy the blade for a wrought iron and hardened cutting edge kitchen/chef knife from you? I can do the woodwork like the handle and scabbard myself. Would love to make it collab like that.
