Forging Railroad Spike Tomahawk

i've forged one up, hafted like a hammer, but i can now tell the edge ain't worth a durn (few whacks and its dull again) i have more spikes, ima try to forge weld a bit in as well! thanks for the walk-through!! i dig your forge too, thats a fly setup.

I just got the eye drifted on my first one I'm making of course I've upset the edge and I was gonna go shape it today and I saw this. I'm glad I did I think I will go back and split it and put a piece of file in like you did seems like that worked really well great video glad I found it you got a new subscriber here thanks bro!!

What i did notice about you was your 100% wrist work,and that is how to use a hammer the proper way,i watch a lot of people do what you do,but the are all arms & that must end up soar.

Yeah early in my blacksmithing career I watched a lot of Brian Brazil, Alec Steele (before he got into just making mostly knives and swords) and some other guys from that philosophy. I can swing a 3 or 4 lb hammer all day (holdingbit towards the end of the handle) and not have any elbow or shoulder problems.

Why did you get the straw color then re-quench? Was that in lieu of tempering? Great video!

Good question. That was to lock in and stop the temper. If I didn't quench it the heat would have continued to build and gone beyond the point where I wanted it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@soundjunky007 actually it is a tear drop shaped eye not oval. But oval would work just fine as well.

Depends on the mower blade. Some great and some not so great. Do a test piece first. See if it will harden and temper well. I forged a draw knife out of a mower blade and it holds a great edge.

Refiner's Forge thanks! I usually like to use files for damascus knife blades. Fun fact I learned to be careful on what steels you use when making damascus because if they have different wear down rates it can lead to poor edge life even if you use high quality steels.

Good info! I haven't dealved into the Damascus realm. Farrier's rasp would make a good bit for this.

Refiner's Forge can’t wait to see that video! Think you can also make an Anglo Saxon style sheath with it? I’m surprised that not a lot of blacksmith KZbinrs give it a go. Very interesting design and clever incorporation of leather and metal.

when i forge axes from rr spike they get all crooked, is it because im begginner and it will stop happening over time or is there a issue that can be fixed right away?

One piece of advice I could offer is try to make sure everything is straight or relatively straight at the end of each heat. If you let things get to catywompis without correcting it can be hard to get it corrected. Thanks for watching and commenting.
