Message to the naysayers: If this message does not resonate with you, kindly move on without comment. I healed YEARS of resentment toward my former husband beginning in January 2018 by watching this 2:00 minute message over and over and over and over. My grandfather and many of my aunts and uncles are pastors and no one has ever explained this concept quite this way. I didn't quite understand it until I found Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber's message. So thank you, thank you, thank you Makers for posting this message, which I randomly found on one of my friends' facebook timeline page one dreary North Carolina night in January. Thank you endlessly.

Pastor Natalie-I first crossed paths with you because we have a mutual friend named Bill. & again just recently. I work part time at the Concordia Lutheran Church. I was trying to put together the bulletin & thought I’d throw a KZbin video on the “ELW settings & liturgical calendar explained in simple terms” as my you tube algorithm played on your sermon played. I was moved & felt a level of connection that was lost and long forgotten. Thank you for that. Recently it was brought to my attention in reading the stand in Pastor’s sermon, that maybe my all well intended “Spiritual/agnostic” subscription possesses a level of narcissism, which humbled me. I listen to you constantly and I feel like you are speaking directly to me. It fills my heart. Covid was heavy on a already disconnected switch left switch right disconnected & isolated world. I think I need God now more than ever. You are a prophetic Pastor and I am so grateful to have crossed paths with you again.

Nadia, this video is the most profound and powerfully uplifting video I have ever watched....I thank you from the bottom of my heart...I totally had the concept of forgivess completely the wrong way around!!! And really needed to forgive my father for abusing me in such a terrible way. I couldn't forgive him using what I thought was forgiveness, without your amazing perspective, I would still be locked in a mental hell for years!!! Thank you Sooo much!! Adrien Scott - South Africa

I had a very spiritual upbringing and quite progressive by many standards, but I could never fully embrace the concept of forgiveness, because it truly always felt like a doormat/pansy approach and I am more of a warrior. Nadia is the first and only person/teacher/pastor/mentor/spiritual advisor I have ever heard/read in my life who actually got through to me on what it means . Her thoughts washed over me in one of the biggest "aha" moments I've ever had. I even come back to this video to watch it from time to time . I love that forgiving makes me a Freedom Fighter and Warrior and a Free Person- and the perspective that it's for *me* not necessarily the other person was a different way of looking at it. Love, love, love this and hope others find some food for thought from it, too.

If we ever get in contact again, I will day something like, "I love you and forgive you, but I think that by ing apart is for the best. I don't want to see you, hear from you, or have any contact, because I don't want to start a world War 6. If I see you coming, I will turn around and walk away. I wish you peace and a goid life"... I came across this in August of 2018. I've been going through a lot of issues (depression) over the unexpected and sudden ending of a "friendship" (bromance actually) where up until this past weekend (Sept 14-16, until I watched Nadia's message here over and over, and yeah it's been three FUCKEN months, 3 months of the "3 R's": Resentment, Regret and Retaliation all 3 represent wasted energy that doesn't do anyone any good...) did her message finally sink in. After forgiving this guy (with help from this video and my support network online and and 2500 miles away in NYC) and forgiving his latest buddy (who I was dumped for without any notice, who now commands his attention) and others in my life who I have let hurt me emotionally (I'm making a list), my take away is: "I don't have to "like" a person after what I went through; I just don't want to be "like" them. And I don't have to be "liked" by them." Forgive and forget, indeed. Now back to "Life"! After 3 incidents that point to the contrary, I knew there was a reason why I am still here. If reading this comment and watching Nadia's video helps just one person to have hope and continue the day-to-day struggle, then I am a happier guy b/c of it! "This Too Shall Pass... I Promise!"

I never heard forgiveness explained in this manner. It really is true that if you don't forgive you will be linked up to your tormentors forever. That's no way to live. However my question is now how do I forgive myself for hurting others.

In her book Lovingkindness, Sharon Salzberg shares various meditations, including one on forgiveness that goes something like this: "To all those who have hurt or harmed me, I offer forgiveness; from all those I have hurt or harmed, I ask forgiveness; and for all the ways I have hurt or harmed myself, I offer myself forgiveness." Does that help in any way?
@sarco646 жыл бұрын
Forgiving ourselves can be harder than forgiving others. I think the first step is to realize that we are forgiven by God. Maybe the best way to realize this is to actually hear the words, "Your sins are forgiven," which is part of the Lutheran liturgy. Here is an explanation from a more traditional Lutheran pastor. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3LCmqyVfreIiZI
@drld6 жыл бұрын
It seems clearer to say that we accept that God has forgiven us, rather than say that we forgive ourselves. "Forgiving ourselves" contains an inherent conflict--we recognize that we have done something hurtful yet we are going to distance ourselves from that hurt, we feel guilty but we're going to ignore that guilt. The Good News about God is that He has forgiven us through Jesus Christ. Our task is to believe that what He says is true, to trust Him, to have faith in Him. We choose to believe what He has pronounced as true. Forgiveness is God's gift, not our accomplishment.
@mariseilevert50746 жыл бұрын
Maybe express being sorry to them….? asking forgiveness and saying heartfelt "sorry" goes a long way… they are more apt to feeling forgiveness after that; then you yourself would be more apt to actually feeling self-forgiveness after seeing how your apology made someone feel a bit better about the whole thing. I know I would feel a lot better if a couple of the …(want to call them assholes but decided to call them "not very nice guys") if they gave me an apology for what they did. It's hard to actually no longer feel hard feelings from having really bad thing done when I was 11, and they go on like pretending it never happened, denial leaving me ostracized from rest of extended family. fuck it. they're assholes. they suck. So ya, Michael, do apologize to her, or him, or them. It'll help in every way and you'll feel better they'll feel better. I appreciated reading your question, I'm glad that there are some people out there that aren't assholes ;-) Blessed be, Michael, Peace Love & Light

Don't be so hard on yourself. The harm we've done motivates us to do right, now. The past is an unending itch. "When will it stop itching?" I just said. Leave it alone (go for a swim, meet someone new, help someone who didn't expect it) or, on certain nights, admit the itch & drink the syrup: that life is tragic, real, strange, and out of our hands as soon as it's passed us by. Old problems with old answers. Be good now.

Definitely not the same way I heard of it before. From personal experience, when I forgive others, I learn to let go, not of the way the other person hurt me but rather that I don't let it affect me anymore. Different people tell you different things about forgiveness and if I forgive justto adhere to the doctrines of the church, then I can outright say that I'm lying through my teeth because I am definitely not being truthful of how I feel. If freedom from the pain caused by others is what you want, then forgiveness is the key. And it starts with you. You have to forgive yourself first (not put blame to yourself though). And forgive others in order to move on in life.

I wasn't sure how I would respond to this, but felt that I should. There is never any true peace unless it is within. As long as we live an adversarial existence at any level, we will never be free of conflict because we carry it with us. The "other" appears to us as if in a mirror, and reveals what we are by our reaction to what appears to be going on "outside" of us. There is actually no "other", no "inside" or "outside" but all merely appears as "sensations" . A free person, does not react to the images in the mirror.

This is beautiful and I believe, anointed. Forgiveness is a beautiful thing we have all been offered thru Christ, and when we forgive others, a wave of refreshing water washes the burden away. The greater the sin against us, the greater God's grace. Ask Him for help and He is faithful to help. So, what makes this lady so authentic and relatable?! I was thinking about how today's church isn't relevant anymore because all it does is try to recreate what God tore down after Jesus died and resurrected. The Temple system of the Old Covenant world is obsolete, and yet we humans, doing the best we can, missing the mark, have rebuilt it. I am seeking God zealously to find what He wants for us in our New Covenant, post Law/Temple world. Where fear and guilt are replaced by Love and Grace, and righteousness, peace, and joy in the Spirit flows out of us... and spontaneous gratitude and cheerfulness overpower all the shadows and worries of life, because Jesus has overcome the world! I'm seeing smaller groups, home gatherings, out in nature, mornings, evenings, whenever... where everyone can share their gifts, their testimony, and the backslidden and de-churched and Prodigals can return to their first love, knowing our God is rich in mercy that is new every morning. In Him we live, and move, and have our being. We are the tabernacle where He dwells, the Living stones with Jesus as our Cornerstone, in our midst.

I come from a fundamentalist church and when I first heard of Nadia, I reeled at the way she looked, and at the way she spoke (language) yet, with as evil as fundamentalism is with it's dressed up self-serving, man-worshipping, cult-like tendencies - her message is like a cool drink of water to a parched throat. People don't like her for the way she looks, for being a female preacher, for her tattoos, for her language - and yet she speaks the truth. Religion is a difficult thing for me. Yet, Religion in many ways is man-made constructs surrounding this pure, holy, thing we call God and yet, I find that even with the best of intentions we can't help but screw it up or manipulate it in an "ends justify the means" sort of thing. I've had been involved in fundamentalism for almost 20 years before I left it. This is the one person who makes me believe that God is not some devil-like being, some Greek knockoff, or some schizophrenic jerk who loves you one moment and then is ready to kill you the next, someone who, if they were a person, I would absolutely want nothing to do with. The thing I like about Nadia is she doesn't drag God down from heaven, throw him into a box that says, "Dumber than we are," before serving him up on Sunday morning.

Okay, but how do you forgive someone who was so toxic to you that you just can't risk bringing them back into your life again? If I forgive, I receive more pain and abuse and will never have peace of mind again. At least now, I can truly live happier and more free than I would be to give that forgiveness.
@theresarezac7502 Жыл бұрын
Hello Desiree, I struggle with this same question! There are people in this world who do not want us to be happy. Or at peace. The number one goal always seems to be putting me down to make themselves feel good. I did cut out the truly abusive people, they do not get to be in my life.
@carlamiagm Жыл бұрын
Oh Des and Zac, you are talking about something more and different from forgiveness. That would be reconciliation and maybe putting yourself at risk. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean that what they did is OK now; it does not mean you want to spend time with them now. Forgiveness is letting go of the right to get even, or the need to get even, or the need to think about wanting to get even. It’s only breaking away from the anger, the resentment, the hate, in order to free yourself of that burden. It doesn’t mean you can now spend time with these people. Avoid them as needed, but you will no longer spend every waking moment hating them for what they did to you. That emotion, the anger- that’s the chain that actually connects you to them. Free yourself from the person, and then, as you are able, free yourself from thinking about them. “Let it go” to free yourself. That means more that you “are over [thinking about] it” and them, than that you “are ok with” what they did, or that you can trust them not to do it again. That may be the case, if it’s something you both want to work on, but forgiveness itself doesn’t at all require “bringing them back into your life”! If you think that’s the goal, you will be asking more of yourself than is necessary, and more than may be safe. Be safe! Just don’t let thinking about everything they did to hurt you take over your life. As I have heard it said, “Not forgiving someone is like taking poison and hoping the other person will die.” You are holding the pain and anger, and holding it can poison you (while the guilty party is not punished, “poisoned”, or even aware). Stay safe. Be at peace. Don’t reconnect.

Forgiveness cannot change assholes. They will still remain assholes in this life. But forgiveness is done in order to let go and set yourself free from more of his or her abuse. Unfortunately forgiveness requires a practice of forgiveness because when people (assholes) injure you a million times- you fall into a million pieces which will require a a practice of forgiving thousands of times in order to release them to their 'maker'.

Forgiveness is to imagine a version of the person you would like to see and not focus on the screwed up version they are right now. Forgiveness is not judging yourself from other peoples opinion of you. People are just assholes sometimes. Remember people try to bring you down by abusing you physically or verbally, just becausethey feel inferior to you. Stay away from people who bring you down by their jealousy and hatred. And whenever u remember what theyve done to you and u feel angry, just imagine grabbing them by their hair n punching them in their face. This should release u from the emotional pain instantly. love to all suffering on account of assholes.
