Don't spend the money on the bling until you have the engine and transmission in the truck. Save the budget for the unexpected issues that inevitably arise. When everything is installed and up and running then you can spend money on the upgrades. This engine for your needs is far superior to the LS. It's all cast iron, with 4 bolt mains, it is carbureted which means no computers or engine management systems to deal with. Keep this project simple and keep it inexpensive.
@Averagegunenthusiast5 жыл бұрын
Good comment, I went LS swap because I blew up a 383 that was a 500hp engine. The LS swap cost me 5K not including transmission, about 1K of that was misc things like bolts and other unexpected things. It cost me as much as it would have to build another 383 and I made the 700r4 work for a while. I don't regret my swap and in my application I couldn't use any stock small block chevy parts, I needed a rotating assembly that would stand up to abuse, roller cam swap ect so the cost was a wash with the LS being a lot more driveable at that power level. With that being said anything over 300hp in these old trucks is a lot, you need better brakes, suspension and tires just to make 500hp safe in a 60s truck.
@rickydrone92745 жыл бұрын
Excellent reply !!!!! K.I.S.S.(keep it simple stupid) is the saying.....lol! Keep that baby retro!!! As far as I would go with that as modern is fuel injection and probably headers as you mentioned. Put all of your money into tearing that motor down and replacing all of the parts and gaskets that could fail in the future. Would be a great learning experience for you. The other thing I would do is suspension upgrades. The best of luck and you will have a great dependable truck.

I believe that was a good deal for that setup. Chad sounds like a really knowledgeable guy and a good one to have on your side. I'm looking forward to this swap, man. Obviously, you're motivated to get it done, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Logan already has experience, so he can walk you through the process if you get into a jam.😉 Great video as always, JD. Even though it only has 81k miles I would do a timing chain set and a oil pump since you are putting it on a stand that way better safe than sorry and go ahead and do the rear main seal and front crankshaft seal when you do the timing chain it comes in the timing cover gasket kit anyways. and I would wait till after you clean the upper side off with kerosene that way all .the sludge does not stay in the oil pan its coming off anyways to do the oil pump clean the oil pan out then. If so, use a "3/4 Race cam," aluminum Torker intake, fender well headers, wide steel wheels on the back, narrow steel wheels on the front, use GM center caps on wheels, use either side pipes or 3" or 4" stacks out of the front of the bed with rain caps on them (those rain caps will play a tune with the 3/4 Race Cam in the engine), fuzzy dice hung off the rearview mirror, and more I cannot remember right now.

HEI Dist is a 1 wire install so good choice. You can also get a 1 wire alt off a late 80's GM car or truck. Im worried 300 hp ( new ) will snap that trans and / or rear end on the first drive. On the bright side, that clutch will slip A LOT so that will help? You were worried about using the auto trans because youll have to change everything, however, the trans will not sit in the same place with a small block, so your going to have to re do everything anyways, including the trans cross member and trans mount and drive shaft

I believe the correct color for a '63 V8 truck engine was gray. The first time you put your foot in it the 3 speed will become small pieces. It was designed for a 185 hp. 283 max. If you really want to break things and stay on the cheap get an L-79 cam, intake manifold and a 2818 Holly. You'll need to do a bit of homework about these 350hp. 327 mini monsters.
@driveventures74455 жыл бұрын
For pretty much the same cost of the shorty headers,I'd use the long tube,and 3" exhaust. That seems to be the best flow combination for the 350's to breath right* If it happens to be a lower compression setup,then 2.5" would be fine

You’ll be tearin. A party he Collum in not time to replace bushings . Just put a floors shifter for 3 spd manual . ( ya gotta cut a hole in the floor ) then you be golden . It’ll rip at lower speeds . But HWY shell whined out and to the floor70 mph as she’s low geared . Trans and rear end . But lay rubber for ever . Or put The Auto trans in rite off , should be a turbo 350 . Get the rite yoke (trans end ) find a drive line take to shop with total over all length and universal joints to match rear end . But a 3 spd floor shifter on the floor they dress out pretty nice . ) then think on rear end gear 456 always worked for me gives great low end and top out 140 mph. You won t go that fast but you love it . If ya stop there the cash won’t be bad ! But if ya do all yer bushings and shocks and front end rebuild . You be in it another 2,500 but still don’t know what you paid for that old Beauty. But 600 for the motor 500.00 to clean and dress and mount . ( that big Holley mite need a better fuel pump get a electric with pressure gauge) and 2,500 for headers driveline , rear end gears and bushing , shocks . 3-3,500 , plus the cost of the truck she will be an amazing truck and yer doin the bed nice . While yer under clean and paint everything gloss black keep rust down and she’ll look good . Good luck wish I was a younger man I’d find one and do the same !
