YEAH FOR NOW . sounds like a bad coil points, condenser, ign switch, wiring harness, bought all those 6cyl parts why not use the truck for awaile as is????????????? had same prob with 6cyl GMC cutting out at speed it was a bad wire going to the 12v on the coil looked ok but was onlly holding on by one strand........................................

@JD JoyrideTV When you jumped in and started the diesel my heart jumped. Those thing's have glow plugs. That means key on for ten seconds or so and it will fire up. Diesel runs off compression and the glow plugs pre heat thing's to get it going. Also with a turbo to extend the life of it, it is best to park and let the vehicle idle for exactly no less than 1 minute to let the turbo cool so you don't cake the oil lines with burned up oil. I just found your channel. Figured I would let you know just in case.

Rebuild the six, torque cam, pistons, 2 barrel manifold, Lose the points and condenser and install an Electronic ignition, split manifold with dual exhaust, four speed trans or five speed, rebuild it yourself and have fun with it. Easy motor to work on. With the three speed you may have some decent rear gears maybe even 4:11’s. Nice rims and tires will make it drive a lot better.

I pulled a C-10. 1983 Silverado. Out of field. V8. Love it. On the window. The power runs though the switch on the steering column. They have wiring kits that by passes the colum. Good luck.

You can drop any of those older motors in there they will fit. I did an old panet truck from six cylinder to a 283. Just needed to do was upgrade radiator.

Swap in a built ford 302 windsor! everyone and their mom swapps ls engines swap a 302! i have one in my 1994 f-150 4x4 5 speed and i get up to 20mpg with it! I like that your wife likes the patina look on these old trucks! it shows she appreciates the history and the truck for what it is!

I got a slant 6 Duster i bought for $600 it sat up for 36yrs. I got it running pour oil through spark plugs holes to get compression up and it started up.

A 96 and up vortech 350 with a cam and intake swap would probably be the best bang for buck swap. Stock vortech heads will support 400hp from a 350.

I think you should relocate the shifter to the floor instead of on the Coelom for these reasons one so you know where all of the gears are located and I would just put in a 4 speed since you said the c-10 is a budget build two if you want you can get a shift knob diagram if I believe because my dad had a 70 c-10 and reverse was all the way to the right and down two it’s self explanatory instead of the column shifter is a guessing game and it makes sense to get a rebuilt transmission for the 350 which is a 4 speed factory

You need to find a stock 5.3 truck engine and put a turbo 350 transmission adapter and if you want more you can get a can or a set of heads

Check your point again your truck is 12v but the coil run on 6 v you need a resister wire on the coil check your spark again.Tony

Your c-10 is the right year, I think it's a 292. 63 was the first year for those. Mid level cam, bore the block 60 over, new intake manifold and a 600 com carb and it'll run like a scalded cat.

Jd any truck of that era is going to need a motor swap and yeah they are money pits until you have replaced everything over a 3 year period! The bonus of this is you put what you want in it!

Before you do anyting, confirm that that engine is no good. It could be a number of different things that would cause the starting problem that you described.

Head gasket set for a 230 thats basicly the top end gaskit kit for 55 bucks and a day for a first timer taking there time from start to finish.

If it shuts off after initial warm up then it's your coil also check your points if it has points check to see if there's any corrosion on your points and if it's worth saving clean the points then set the gap personal opinion everybody wants a V8 but you can build that inline 6 to be pretty spunky not to mention it would be something different to look at when you take it to a car show and you can actually build that six on a good budget.

PS I don't know if you know anything about classic or antique cars try pouring some gas out of the carburetor if she fires your fuel pump is bad. And if you have not changed your spark plugs pull them out and see if they have been filed they may need to be cleaned or replaced

If you can help it, I would keep its original engine. Those little in-line 6 engines are rock solid, and if you fix it up and take good care of it , it will last you forever. That truck will make a nice cruiser for those date nights.

Just get the stock engine running right. That engine is the same engine used in the 1953 and 1954 Corvettes so it's certainly good enough for a farm truck.

If it was a head gasket you would have water in your oil. You need to adjust your carburetor and set the gap in your points and set your timing. Chilton or Hanes auto repair Manuel’s can help you with that or you tube videos

When carbureted engines act like they don't want to start or are flooded hold the gas to the floor while cranking the engine. It helps.

Those straight 6 engines are very reliable when everything is running right you may need to rebuild the carb a rebuild kit is cheap and it's really easy to do

My thoughts exactly. I don't hear spark. Coil, plugs, points, distributor... I would be looking at that. It did run, it doesn't run now, it sounded acceptable... I think he wants to build the truck. I'm no mechanic, but I've brought a few things back to life. Hondas, VWs Fords and Chevys. I own a wrecker, so I I've dragged a few things home to play with. I was more concerned with the clutch and trans. But it is a 3 on the tree, and I've never driven one. It's a whole different animal. Unless there's water in the oil, or oil in the water.... I don't even see any evidence of a vacuum leak. It could be a carb issue. I don't hear it firing. I would investigate these things first, save my money on other things it needs. So far as I can see that engine is fine. It ran. But I don't hear spark.

To do a ford motor you just buy a donner mustang and switch everything into the truck. Not hard at all that's what we d id with my old 70 pick up. And now it has fuel injected 302 with a over drive automatic grant stair out of a ford lincoln.and the freaked thing runs great at a $500 investment for the old 1989 lincoln. 😉😉😉

I have mixed emotions on the engine swap. Everyone and his pet has gone V8's. I love the newer six"s with the duel carb... tbi style. Two two barrel carbs that are tbi instead of choke cables and throttles that mess up. I would do a newer six like the 292 ci engine with the duel exhaust and use fly by wire style throttle linkage, bad to the bone cam and dress up kit. You need to look at some that have a turbo and duel carbs, cam, exhaust, dress kit and then bag it with the exhaust going out the back and cutting down behind rear tire to give the who really knows what is under the hood. I have seen six's on the dyno pull over four hundred horsepower at the rear wheels. I love the patina look and they are only old once. The bags will offer better control of the steering system that is only rated for a small engine. Its just me and doing a six cylinder would be more expensive but radical as heck... bad a** man. Pipes that have character and the fuel system should take it over the top. Some guys run stacks on the side of cab to the top but it interferes with the sound system. Duel carbs with posi, right manifold, not jap cheapo stuff either. Do it right. I pull wrenches all my life and started before you for sure. I'm 73 now and have run cars on the oval and quarter mile. I had lots of mild cars that did low thirteens but did a eight second car too. I ran em and I built them. Remember paint won't pull the plow, and that crome won't get you home. Yet the proper settings and cam nd the titles will pile up on your dash. We ran title for title and I had a spindle with titles, and ran mine against theirs and that included the titles on the spindle. Fix the outside up so the holes and rust have been attended to but the inside should be sic! Under the hood should get all the attention you want... you want opinions, thats mine.... Stage two turbo, duel carb (TBI), headers with tuned exhaust to the back. Decent wheels but the truck should be louder than the wheels, your not advertising wheels unless there your wheels. Make the upholstery pop and don't paint. Wrap it for a while till its out of your system but leave some patina
