Forgotten Classic NASCAR Race Shops Ultimate History Tour! (What Do They Look Like Today?)

Ever since we moved to North Carolina we have been tracking down and documenting the locations of former NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series race team shops. We have found these places and share pictures from back in the day for almost all of them. There are TONS of ordinary buildings in the greater Charlotte area that you may pass every day not knowing what type of legendary racing cars have comer from within those walls. Mooresville Concord Harrisburg and Denver are all scattered with these places! Hall of fame careers built under a roof that now houses a business completely unaware of its legendary past. Vintage race cars are kept in museums...but everybody forgets the buildings in which they were born...until now!!

The shop next door to Penske in Lakeside Park that was Roush in the late '90s was originally Moroso Racing. We loved Liberty because it was near my home in nearby Pleasant Garden and our guys wouldn't talk to other teams. In addition we could race at Charlotte, Rockingham, Martinsville and North Wilkesboro without motel bills.

I lucked out the day I visited the shop in Liberty. Mark and Jack were both there, and of course we saw you there, as well. It would have been in 94 some time, and the next time I saw you in person was when Karen (my ex) worked at the 97 shop right after Jack bought the team. NASCAR was a different world then.

The 90’s for NASCAR was definitely its best time. My Father worked at Bristol Motor Speedway in the 90’s from 92-96 head of the cleanup crews. I got to meet a lot of old legendary drivers and also see the track then as a kid it was completely different than now races stayed sold out it was an awesome time. Totally miss the 90’s

Back in the 80’s our “gang” of drinking buddies would leave Asheville 3 hours before the race & drive to Bristol, park in the track parkinglot close to the track, buy a $13 ticket sit on the front row on the back stretch, get hit with chicken bones and empty beer cans all race long. Watch DW and Earnhardt race up front all night long. Best $13 I ever spent. We did it for at least 5 years in a row. The night race in August or September even back then was incredible. ESPN had to bring in rental construction lights that ran on generators all around the track. Bathrooms had 3 stalls and ankle deep in you know what. Primitive? Yes ! Redneck ? Yes But man what a blast.

Mitchel for me it brings me back to a time when only portions of a race were broadcast on Sunday afternoon on Wide World Of Sports. NASCAR was really coming into its own. Great memories. The last few years nascar is just not like it was. When guys would either tow or drive their cars to the track. When they would work on them in store parking lots. Man those were the days. Nascar will never be that way again and so glad to have been a fan when NASCAR was the sport 🇺🇸🏁

I just finished watching this vid. I'm 53 , I started watching racing with my dad when I was about 8 or 9. He was my gateway to all things racing, he passed in 07 but my memories are wonderful. I see how emotional you get about the history, the shops, cars and people who forged ahead to create our memories. I love that you as a younger man appreciate it so much, you are giving history lessons to a couple generations that otherwise would have no idea. I loved the Mark Martin first race shop , his museum etc tour, he was mine and my dad's all time favorite driver. I just want to say thanks for keeping classic racing alive through your videos. I was born and raised in Indiana , going to multiple short tracks from the 70s through the late 90s. The old days of stock car racing were so different than modern nascar, and I cherish those memories.

Loved the 6007 Victory Lane shop.. Was a huge Kulwicki Fan!! I went to 18 Cup Races in 92 and 19 in 93. Although I was heart broke after 4/1/93. After winning the Championship I made all the plans to attend 19 races in 93. After the plane crash I almost canceled all the remainder plans of the season. I'm glad I didn't!! I like your commitment to the history of the sport. Hopefully I can one day meet you in person.

This video is golden! I am 62 years old and have been an avid fan since I was 9 years old when my dad took to Darlington to the Rebel 400. In the past several years I have found a lot of the shops you show here. I was and still am a Cale Yarborough fan. I met him when I was 12 and spent some time with him. Thank you so much for all that you do. I’ve been a nascar fan since the early 70’s and I’m in my late 50’s now. I actually remember after church listening to races after church on the way home with my family. It was then that I developed my interest in drivers like Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and the likes of their competitors with my favorite being Richard Petty. Your tour of some of the race shops, brought back a lot of memories as my family relocated to Charlotte from Greensboro in 1978 and later as an adult had the pleasure of doing my own tour while most of the teams were still located in the area your video covers. NASCAR has seemed to have a central part of my life sometimes unknowingly. In 1996 My late wife and I moved to this little town called Franklinville outside of Asheboro. Little did I know that on the other side was Randleman, the home of my hero Richard Petty. I took pleasure in knowing that I was probably driving on the same streets that were rumored to be Petty Enterprises “testing” grounds. So I said that to say awesome job, keep up the good work, and never stop having the passion for NASCAR. Even though things change, somehow they always seem to stay the same in the end. Oh, by the way I loved the video where you were visited by Darrell Watrip, another of my heroes.

I enjoy cars, period. I'm a nurse practitioner, so I have nothing to do with car repair, but the engineering behind evolving from model t/model A to Nascar and now electric is amazing. A team of men with desire and ingenuity made it happen. I personally hate transition from internal combustion to electric, but that's a whole different topic. Incredible history lesson and one hell of a lot of work, both driving around to find, then video editing. Thank you so much. Took a tour from Minnesota here down to the Bristol race, then down 421 to North Wilkesboro. It was '98, two years after the final race. A guy named Paul said we could have a look around. After, we drove out to Ingle Hollow Drive and saw Junior Johnson's old house and shop. Still had the stripes on the driveway where DW practiced pit stops. Elderly lady came out of the house and gave us an incredible oral history of the place, including a couple whoppers she asked to keep to ourselves :) Anyway, now more than ever, history is needed ... and we're thankful for your rare lessons.

My grandpa was in nascar when hickory motor speedway was big so I grew up watching nascar with my grandpa, he records every single race and has for as long as I can remember. Watching these videos gives me some cool things to talk with him about and I love the history of anything with cars so I’m def a big sucker for these videos.

Well I'm a little older, and grew up in the Birmingham Al area, there was BIR, a small race track at the fair grounds. It is completely gone now but I will never forget the sounds of the cars from my grandparents house right down the road. Also used to go to Sayre speedway up Hwy. 78 to watch the figure 8 races. Such a good time of my life, hanging with my great uncle. Love your history of the old race shops.🏁👍 You guys are so lucky to get to see the places you do. Keeping it alive!🙏

I'm 51 an we used to go to Carowinds and pass by the old 33 shop with the car on the pole. To me that was the best part of going. I have been fortunate to meet drivers and all have always been nice. My uncle painted Dale Jarrett's old Busch team shop just before he sold it to NASCAR to house the motorcade. I got a ton fo stickers they used to use on the cars. I love the history. Living around Hickory I hate seeing it disappear.

I was born July 4th 1972, and I've been a race junkie every since i can remember. Davey Allison was my favorite wheelman in that era, aswell a Alan Kulwiki in the Hooters #7 car. When they passed i stopped watching. I started building cars in 94, and have never built one that wasnt a winner, with rookies, and seasoned veterans, and even a woman in 2001. I really love what y'all are doing with your channel, and wish y'all all the best that life has to offer, and yes Mitchell you are a lucky man. I never found anyone in my years that shared my same passions avout racing and fabricating in general. Keep up the killer content, y'all couldn't run me off if you tried to. Y'all take care.

All the racing history you're willing to dig up, I'm happy to absorb. As far as age goes, I'm old enough to be your dad but I can't think of a video where I haven't learned or been reminded of something. With the addition of Uncle George, the content is even more inspirational/aspirational because it's relevant to my own OBS project. As far as my connection to the history, I was growing up in Florida and in the Army through most of the 80s. In Europe, the service TV showed a lot of NASCAR.NHRA racing and professional Wrestling. 6000 miles away from home, we all wanted to be Dale Earnhardt/Kyle Petty/Rusty Wallace/Bobby Allison and Rowdy Roddy Piper/Andre the Giant/Randy Savage/Jimmy Snuka (maybe not Jimmy, looking back) Thank you both, for all you give us.

My Father took me to a local short track when I was really young. The next day he took me to his friend's house and I sat in his modified. I was hooked I watched NASCAR all the time. When I was 13 I started helping out on a street stock. I worked my way up and did 9 seasons in NASCAR in the late 90s to mid-2000s. All low-budget teams but got to meet a lot of my heroes. I enjoy seeing your videos.

This video is fantastic. I really enjoy your passion for NASCAR race shop history. My son and I were were Davey Allison fans. We live in Tennessee but were able to visit the Robert Yates Racing shop on Dwelle Street, Charlotte, 2 times. Both visits were on Saturday and the team was off racing somewhere. On one visit, James Lewter, who worked in the engine shop was working. He let us in to visit and gave my son some Davey Allison and Robert Yates Racing posters. On the other visit, Ray Fox Jr. was working at the shop and let us in and let us look around. He let me get a picture of my son sitting at the dyno console in the engine dyno room. You were right about the area of the town the shop is located in. The original fence was not as tall but had razor wire on the top of the fence. We also visited the Harry Hyde shop which was swallowed up by the Hendrick Racing Complex and also the Cale Yarborough shop, that you talked about, at the airport. Keep the history coming. Also I attended the first race held at Bristol Motor Speedway in 1961.

Man even most of their “starter” shops were massive imo, ive always been interested into behind the scenes of the operation of the nascar teams back when they wreck then get out and kick each others asses but lost interest in the racing when it became scripted more or less. I am writing this as I finish the last 2 minutes of the video. I like your videos because I grew up watching the races. I grew up in the Metro Detroit area and I have participated in testing of the LS engines in Flint, MI. I worked at the GM Technical Center in Warren, MI a mile from where I was born. Your videos are some of the greatest on KZbin. Screw the algorithm and just be you. Love the Monte Carlo build. I owned an '86 SS. I currently own a 1987 Caprice Classic Brougham with a LS1 swap.

That’s correct sir, I used to work there, it was called PPC Racing. Greg Pollex was the owner, Greg is the father of Sherry Pollex. There was several other drivers that drove for us, Jason Keller, Jeff Green (championship #10 nesquik) car, Scott Riggs, Terry Cook in the trucks. When stacker 2 pulled out of their sponsorship deal, we had Michel Jourdain Jr come in for some Busch races along with Brent Sherman and John Andretti drove a cup car for us, those are the drivers who drove when I worked there. However, Greg is the original owner that gave Chad little his cup ride in the John Deere car but sold it later on and gave several other drivers the opportunity to drive for him. Greg is a great guy that deserved so much more than what he was recognized for.

Great tour of the history of the NASCAR shops. My first NASCAR race as a kid was Bristol TN. My dad took me and I was about thirteen. We stopped at a Holiday Inn to eat something the night before. The restaurant was full of the different NASCR teams. I was amazed at all of the team uniforms. I actually got to meet several drivers, including Richard Petty. He was signing autographs for all the kids. I’ve been a Petty fan ever since. Great memories of weekends traveling to the races with my dad. He would always try to get the best seats available. That is in the days when fans could cross the track after many races and get up close looks at the cars and haulers. Had a Petty Enterprise team member give me his PE uniform cap once at Atlanta after the race. I wanted to thank you for your efforts to preserve what you can of the history of the sport.

I live right down the road from the last Morgan-McClure Motorsport (4 Kodak) shop here in VA. I remember interviewing one of the guys from the shop for a school project. It has since sold and there is now military equipment on the property now. They were good in the early 90's but long gone now.

I grew up helping my dad on his dirt track car and watching racing on Sundays. I use to cut grass in the mid to late 80's and use the money to buy blank VCR tapes just to record the races. Unfortunately all of the videos I had got damaged and gone in a flood back in the mid 90's. Harry Gant and the 33 Bandit was my favorite by far. Racing was just a good thing that brought my family together and allowed us to hang out. Thanks for these videos and memories. I am now 60 years old, I took my son to most of these shops every Aug. for 12 years, we would take 3, 4, even 5 days and visit these places, most weren't open to the public, but we wanted to ride by and see them anyway. Couple of reasons I love NASCAR and its history to this day. The first thing I can remember in off of the top of my head was in kindergarten back in 2004-2005 for Halloween I dressed up as Jeff Gordon and his 2004 DuPont uniform and thought it was just the coolest thing ever. Shortly after that I went to 2 races at Texas motor speedway with my dad and his friend. I still remember to this day after getting home from those races all I wanted was to go again and keep seeing those cars going around the track and hearing the noises they used to make back then. The second reason NASCAR has stuck with me for so long is in between the races I went to when I was younger Herbie fully loaded came out and I thought it was the coolest thing ever that Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson along with other drivers were in the movie and their cars played such a prominent role in it. From there forward I stayed watching NASCAR religiously for a few years after that and slowly kept in touch with it. Once 2015 rolled around and Jeff Gordon announced his retirement I had to go to his final race at TMS and that race single handedly reignited my love for the sport and since then my love for motorsports and cars has grown past NASCAR and I watch every single race I can every weekend and have had season tickets for NASCAR and INDYCAR at TMS ever since. My dream is to hopefully go to the Hendrick campus one of these days and see the old cars and all this history those buildings have. I would love to see a video on that place one day if you ever feel like making it happen!

I’ve been to most of the pre-Mooreville shops and all of the early modern shops in Mooresville. I was working in racing from 86-94 directly and around Nascar through the 90’s. Teams early on were away from the other shops as they didn’t want employees going to lunch together. I’ve been to virtually all of these shops when they were active. Don Miller was/is a great guy

Love all this nascar nostalgia. I was born in 90 and was a big fan of Dale Earnhardt, Morgan Shepard and Mark Martin When dale was killed in 01, I fell out of a lot of love with NASCAR. Watching your videos rekindles a lot of what I missed since then. I grew up collecting diecast, building model cars, etc so this brings back a lot of memories It'd be great sometime if you could ever do a video about how NASCAR teams work. How they field drivers, develop multiple cars etc

Been a Nascar fan forever! Started out as a Ernie Irvan fan and when he quit I saw Tony Stewart win at Indianapolis Raceway Park in a Bush race. Mostly went to Indy races. Moved from Jersey to CO. in 95 and started going to Nascar races including Earnhardt Sr. last race at Daytona ! Love the nostalgic tour of shops!

So much nostalgia, This is all before my nascar interest days, but I know all these names from both obviously history stuff from watching nascar later on, but my neighbor growing up, either his mom or the guy she dated was into nascar and I always remember him mentioning drivers - that's where most of the names come from...My biggest memory from this era was the Days of Thunder ride at Canada's Wonderland and that was one of my greatest childhood memories. And if anyone was going to turn a movie theater into a race shop it'd be Michael Waltrip, that guy used to make me laugh

I grew up going to dirt races with my dad and grandpa and watching the NASCAR race on sundays on tv together. So watching things like this just brings me back to a time when they were both alive and makes me remember good times with them. Thank you for that.

I lived thru all be dale sr’s ‘80 championship and was a huge fan. We have a lot of rare nascar memorabilia that are either one offs or very very limited. Most of the one offs are petty related from the 90’s. When you first bought the dale trailer I got very excited because I had seen one of those trailers at the local Chevy dealership when dale’s car was there. Being from central PA I feel out of place most of the time due to the fact that my dream was to become part of a nascar team. I also remember many nascar drivers coming to port royal speedway (dirt 1/2 mile) to race exhibition races on Saturday nights when nascar was at pocono. I also have many many other stories related to nascar at pocono and Indy. Also love all your builds and you and Logan work great together.

As someone who works in the sport now at 21, the history is what got the sport where it is today and these videos of the shops and places some of the best cars were built out of is incredible, being new to the Mooresville area I wasn't aware before some of the shops I've been to and or driven by had past history. For me, I grew up next to a drag strip, it was called Fremont, Baylands Raceway Park, also my brother raced at sears point, so that is way, but the sound of Nascar engines is awesome, and going in the pit is great, and eating all the junk food, at the race is great, I know, but the food makes the race. I love geeking out on this history stuff because I have been a NASCAR fan for so long and I miss the older more simple days of racing when mechanics and crew chiefs worked in the "gray" areas of the rule book. I was born in 73 and my earliest memory’s of nascar are around 83 or 84. Dale Earnhardt was and still is my hero. I love this stuff and remember all these teams. Wow. This was such an awesome video. Thank you so much!. As a kid my parents packed up the car and we went from Pennsylvania to visit many of these shops, usually going to the Richard Petty open house or one at the Skoal shop. I remember going to Mooresville shortly after Days of Thunder was released and the secretary at Moroso telling us about the barn in the movie being just a couple of miles away and how she got to meet Tom Cruise there. We drove by and got a picture of it and it looked the same as it was in the movie. I wonder if any of that is still there.

These history videos are 100% my favorite my grandfather is actually friends with Kenny Wallace and Kenny schrader. He’s a local legend around the Illinois dirt tracks. Used to be called the “doctor of dirt” while he was a track man at belle clair speedway

I thought the reference to the "X" pipes was so interesting. It reminded me of the day sometime during that era, I think it was Sterling driving the car in practice or qualifying at Daytona. The car was so softly sprung that the whole rear of the car was squatted, going down the back stretch, to get it down out of the air and the announcers were amazed at the uniqueness of the sound of the car. The "X" pipes made Runt Pitman's (the engine builder for Morgan-McClure) engine sound like an Indy car, and it certainly did. I'll never forget that. Such a unique car. Wonderful memories.

Used to watch NASCAR in the 90’s and early 2k’s with my dad (we mostly rooted for Gordon). I remember crying at 11 years old when Dale died. Stopped watching when I got into high school and got busy with everything else. Didn’t watch a race until I went to the 2020 Daytona 500 a few months after my dad died. We never went to a race but we watched on tv religiously. Makes me sad cause he would’ve loved it live. Been to 4 races since and got tickets to the Bristol night race later this year. Miss what it used to be but still love it because nothing else is like it. Thanks for doing these videos!

I got really interested in NASCAR in the late 60’s. The only way we got to see it on television was ABC’s “wide world of sports” once or twice a year. I was born in 1958. I didn’t see my first live nascar race till 1986 at Michigan. I have made it my life’s goal to visit almost every track that NASCAR raced on, and have been to most of them either to visit or attending a race. I have lately lost interest in nascar, but love all forms of racing. About 10 years ago when my kids quit dirt racing, and moved from home I built a car and started racing myself. I absolutely love it. Love the history of nascar, keep the videos coming. Thanks for sharing these. I am looking forward to seeing more.

We are big fans of former Dale Earnhardt Sr.!! In fact, my husband has a whole room of his stuff that we have collected over the years. A lot are still in the original boxes. We have a enormous collection, that we both love. We were watching the race when he got killed. Very upset, as we never missed a race!!! We have lost interest in Nascar since then.

In 1973 i lived in Greenville SC and at the age of 12 worked for a neighbor who raced at Greenville Pickens speedway, we would work all week in his little 2 bay garage behind his house and we built 2 different cars and he would pay me 40$ a week and take me to the track on Saturday night. Went to Charlotte metrolina speedway in 1974 to see the big boys race on Saturday night. In 1976 our family moved to VA and I have been a race fan. Really love all the stuff you do a cool walk back in time and hearing from greats like mark Martin and their beginnings. Keep up the great work

My story, the year Dale Earnhart cut a tire down and turn three and lost the Daytona 500 I was 11 and I watched that whole race because I really liked the black car in the front. Fell in love with days of thunder watched it probably 200 times. Grew up took a job in the car business watch the race is on Sundays because I was always at the dealership, yes, I sold cars because I loved driving them, The day I moved away from my home state to a new state to take a job I was 22, That was day of the 2001 Daytona 500. I woke up the next morning to start my life with you City and horrible news. I have been connected to NASCAR ever since, it’s a great sport I’m so happy that you guys are keeping it alive by doing what you do. NASCAR needs you just as much as we all need you guys. I have been a lifelong Nascar Fan. Grew up in a household with more Earnhardt pictures on the wall the of the family. lol. I love the all history and just recently, about a month ago found myself at work on google earth looking at all current Race shops. Been to charlotte many of times, but never to be able to do a race shop tour (bucket list). Glad I just found this channel. We definitely have a passion for racing history in common. It's so cool to see all those shops where they were cranking out all these race cars, almost one at a time. Unlike the "next gen" cars now, which is almost like ordering cars from a factory, (or even "mail order.") Takes a lot of the romance and grit out of the old days! Nice tour, Logan & Mitchell!!! I've never seen a nascar race live before. My late grandpa was obsessed with Earnhardt Sr, so I grew up watching races on TV with him. I don't care much for today's nascar races, but I love the early 90s nascar up until Sr passed away. Then I stepped away from it. So obviously what I enjoyed the most with my grandpa is all history now. And I find as I get older, I'm more and more fascinated with history of stuff. So that's why I enjoy this KZbin channel so much, is seeing the history of my 'primetime' of nascar. So everytime I get a new notification of videos from this channel, I usually find time right away to watch it.

Deep dive into as much race shops as you can would be fantastic! Very cool story about you and Rick. I love the racing history, even if it is a empty building that once had a race team in it. I lived through and was a huge fan of the race teams and racers of that era. My parents were into racing back starting in the 1960s. So I grew up into being a race fan. Lot of this history should not be forgotten. Did you do a stand alone video for the Skoal bandit, Harry gant car?

My Father started racing in the 50`s (including going with a car to the old Daytona Beach Course). I was born in 1964 and he was a crewman on a dirt modified at the time. A few year later owned a car. I went to my first dirt race in 1964 (first NASCAR race in 1974) and have been a fan, crewman, whatever since then. I love the old history, probably since I lived though most of it. Today i have stopped working on or building cars and I travel to races all over the country and seek out shows that have restored race cars whenever possible.

I got into NASCAR because of two main reasons. First was my uncle who moved to Mooresville in 2004 to work for Billy Ballew on his truck team. In 2005 when I was 6 I got to tour the shop and walk into the haulers. He still works, now for KBM on Nemecheks 4. And my grandpa was good friends with Rich Bickle and was his crew cheif for all 5 of his Snowball Derby wins. He worked with Rich in NC during his nascar days too.
