I watched my dad and brother in fits of rage similarly. Occasionally heard made up words and swear words aimed at me, objects thrown doors slammed...Around 10-12yrs old I still remember a conscious decision to NEVER be like that or talk that way to my kids or others...and NEVER have EVER. I only uttered a cuss word out of my mouth 1 time when I slipped on some ice landing all my weight on my elbow feeling like I was dying it hurt so bad. But nobody ever heard me say anything. Now about 30 yrs later I've repeatedly had people confess to me (usually years later) that I left a lasting impression on them because they noticed that I never swore or talked bad about people, never seen me mad\upset...so they self reflected and sought to change they way they talked or acted. It's amazing the power of influence we have in others lives around us whether we try or not. That can work positively OR negatively.

Im an Aussie and ive been getting into the history of NASCAR the last couple months as I’m drawn to the earthy grassroots aura it has/had. This was just fantastic to listen to, can’t even imagine how I’m awe you must’ve been. Mark seems like such a down to earth humble regular guy. These people are treasures and we need to learn from them

Mark’s stories remind me about when I was a working in a Kawasaki shop just to get closer to bikes and snowmobiles and racing. The drive the passion the sacrifice and being humble. I’m 53 now

Thank you for sharing this! My uncle was the biggest Mark Martin fan! I remember him telling me multiple times. “Kid if you chose Mark as a role model you could definitely do a lot worse!” Of course he meant that Mark was a helluva role model both on and off the track! He would have loved to have seen this!

Why can't I ever just end up on a historical road trip with a nascar legend?! This is great! Thank you Mark!

Thank you so much for this brother I really needed to see this. I come from hueytown Alabama, and marks father's stories in racing resenate with me so personaly. I come from a long line of that generation of men who worked with what they had and were tough as nails never complained who's long gone now in my family Growing up in the 90s, these guys were my heroes every sunday racing. I had to have all their diecast cars, games etc. It's incredible how life comes full circle when you start hearing how much in common you have with the greats of racing.

Mark's dad sounds a lot like my dad. Mark was scared of him but respected and loved him, same with me and my dad. I would be interested in knowing if Mark's dad had a military history and fought in a war. Mine was on the aircraft carrier Langley CVL-27 during WW2 and I think that affected him tremendously. He probably suffered from PTSD and needed medication but never received it.

Mark Martin wasn’t my favorite driver but I always respected him, but after watching this video I have learned so much. Not just about the history but about being a man. Thanks for the video, hope your able to do more, doesn’t have to be drivers but anyone that has racing history. So much can be learned before these people are gone and stories like Mr Martins would never be told.

Wow isn’t amazing how many successful people share the same advice about paying attention. You have mentioned it in many of other interviews. My dad would take us by wrecker company to show us the bad wrecks gore and all to teach about driving mistakes and why it happened and why we could learn from it.the same for giving your word.

This is honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen on KZbin. Y'all are so lucky to get to spend this time with Mark and get these stories first hand. Thank you and thanks Mark for being a true living legend!
