Arnold was big proponent of keeping the head still, not so much down. I've been trying this and if I get the right hip deep as I can, it is incredible the crack off the club. It literally sounds like a rifle shot. This OTT from the inside had to have been what they were doing. I still need some more confidence before I take out to compete, but I believe that this move is the Holy Grail of the golf swing.

Hi Christo. Congratulations with your birdies. And to say the least your miracle OTT swing is catching a whirlwind of opportunities for all and well it should be. Personally though I think golf instructions today complicates the 4 points of Jim McLean X factor by focusing on using all 4 points separately. Point 1 = Lead foot. Point 2= Trail shoulder. Point 3= Lead foot. Point 4= trail shoulder. Arnold Palmer simply did not All Arnold did was to simplify his swing using 2 points in his diagonal swing totally under his control. Point 1 Arnold pushed against ground with lead foot as hard as he could that flexed his lead knee to push back his trail hip and trail shoulder as far back as he could and then at Point 2 he simply pushed his trail shoulder in the direction of his target. All done automatically, Did Arnold swing over his backswing to start his downswing. Absolutely! To become an elite golfer of our own; in my humble opinion we need only do the same as Arnold did with variations of force depending on which club we are using at any given time. Point 1 push against the ground with lead foot/ Point two push forward with trail shoulder. Done! I am currently using and controlling two point of the X factor that I believe Arnold Palmer did brilliantly. His Helicopter arms at the end of his swing were reactive to his two point swing allowing the automatic reaction to occur for point 3 and point 4 of Jim McLean X factor I guarantee the other two points of the X factor will automatically fall into place for those who allow it to happen At 75 I now consider myself a 2 point elite golfer and believe me It’s that simple It’s elementary. Cheers 👍❤️😃⛳️🥂

First off, I think it is refreshing to challenge some of the dogma in golf instruction. There are good players that have had a downswing above their backswing plane. If your hands are above their address position at impact, your hands came down more steeply than they went up. Providing that’s still a functional plane that provides good impact conditions (path, AOA, low point, face to path), it’s not really a problem. The club still needs to be in the slot somewhat. I’d define over the top as the club approaching the ball from outside the target line. That’s generally not going to lead to good things. If the hands are overly high at impact that will make it more difficult to square / control the club face. I’d focus on a functional downswing plane and less on whether it is slightly over or slightly under your backswing plane because that will depend upon your backswing plane as well as your downswing plane. The flatter and lower the backswing plane, the more likely the downswing plane will be above it.
@MiracleSwingExperience

Thanks for that. Have you tried this, though?

@@MiracleSwingExperience Hello Christo. My shaft ends up a little above the original shaft plane (at set up) at impact, so I’m fairly sure I do this somewhat. There are some players that get back onto the original shaft plane at impact, but I think they are the exception rather than the rule. Nick Price, Lee Trevino, Ben Hogan and Sergio Garcia all do/did that. I think many players do what you are suggesting. The hands can come out a little more on the downswing and you can still find the original shaft plane, but I think it’s harder. You really have to turn well to do that. Sergio and Dustin Johnson have interesting hand paths at the start of the downswing. They come almost straight down. Not everybody does though. Providing you get a functional, repeatable and consistent impact I don’t think it’s a problem that the hands come over a little.

This looks like the takeaway is under plane, but the downswing / impact is on plane. I would not call this OTT, but just under/on-plane. OTT (for most amateurs) is just this: under plane take away, and massive over the plane on the downswing, causing a left swing-path, that again causes usually glancing impacts, and weak slice shots. This is also not "forgotten" in any way. See Brooks Koepka, he does something similar, a semi under the plane take away on on-plane impact. He also usually plays a fade.

@@MiracleSwingExperience It vanished with the advent of metal drivers I'm guessing. I was taught to swing like this 45 years ago as a junior golfer. My swing was very Bruce Lietzke like. Played my best golf between 1978-1985 (less than 5 handicap). Then life interrupted, several times, and I couldn't play regularly, if at all. When I decided to get fully back into golf in the mid 1990s, I couldn't duplicate my success. Sought out lessons for the last 20+ years and all instructors kept wanting me to twist my torso against quiet legs, swinging on one plane, hitting positions and coming from the inside, etc. Seeing your videos, I am now working on rebuilding my lost swing. Thank you for bringing back attention to this method.

It's a reverse loop maneuver. Christo is right. It is easier and more repeatable. They've made 'over the top' so tabu over the years that it has caused a lot of good golfers to become psychologically crippled with fear about how their golf swing 'is supposed to look' that it has done a major disservice to golfers. Countless people get worse trying to fit into the box of modern gof instruction. Or they simply remain painfully mediocre. Some commenters seem confused as to what Christo is saying is "over the top". It's simply having your downswing path be above (in front of) your backswing's path. By coincidence I saw an instructor showing the exact opposite on another channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4KQln1omN6qrNk This is modern instruction about "laying off" the club on the downswing. Christo is saying that this made his golf harder and less consistent compared to bringing the swing path forward for the downswing.

Communication is the problem I think. Golfers get the wrong idea from the meaning of descriptive terms. I wouldn’t call these swings OTT, but I can now see how one might describe these classic swings as “inside over the top.” I swing in a way I think is like Jack Nicklaus BUT I am aware I probably don’t entirely do that. However, once you get something you must work with it and see how it is an improvement and then improve on that improvement over and over until you really have full command over the swing. I think one can come full cycle (going from pinching their lower back to finding a way to swing that doesn’t hurt the lower back and yet works like a well oiled machine). I have seen and done a lot of swings and I’m in the Nicklaus mode and rather using the hands and arms as power and control centers - yet I use my whole body like Nicklaus or even Palmer as shown in this video. I have used an upper back hunch for a long time now and my back has not hurt for years. It also helps I am a “hands ‘n arms” type swinger I think (though I know the hands and arms are not the only important part of the machine at work). I cannot help but see that these pros are swinging to finish “low and left” - accounting for somewhat less “low and left” for those hitting draw shots, like Palmer. Didn’t Tiger Woods mention his “ole’ swing” style? Something he wanted Butch Harmon to “correct” for him (after he won the US Open by the largest margin ever, if I recall correctly). I see the “ole’ swing” as requiring a “low and left” hands and arms action across the body in the hitting area... but correct me if you think I’m wrong. (I’m saying Tiger seemed to literally be saying he was moving the hands from right to left across his body in the downswing and in the hitting area, and in a fashion a matador would move his cape away to the side of his body as the bull would charge by. ...l would guess if Mr CG would look at some Tiger Woods videos - including the early years - that would be apparent... But I’m saying this and I haven’t actually looked myself...) And I would guess Mr CG will see the “inside OTT” action in Tiger’s old “olé swing” (if not also in his later more “modernized” swing). Just some thoughts.

@@MiracleSwingExperience Yes, but Tiger had an upper back hunch like Nicklaus I think. One friend of mine - an athlete but not a golfer - commented “he’s like a snake!” Uhhhh, my point being he hah his head out past his hips and the hips could not block his hands/arms movement. Thanks for this ....its great to watch the old pros, but when you consider the myriad of successful golf swings over the last 100 odd years and the many varied swings of the old masters the one thing that I have come to learn is that is there is no 'correct' way to play golf. Some hit a draw as their stock shot like Arnie, some a fade like Jack, some even straight, some set up closed, some open, some drive the legs, some fire the hips, some swing fast, some slow, some have an abbreviated swing , some a long overswing , some have a one plane swing, some two, some take the club back way inside, or way outside, or over the top.....set ups are different, grips are different, swing thoughts, swing keys, putting styles etc etc etc....all different. So there is no one perfect way, and no 'correct' way ....and in my view it's up to the individual to build themselves a repeatable swing that suits their physique, adheres to certain basic fundamentals , and is within their capability. It's a learning process that never stops. I've recently found a swing key that has helped me, from Nick Faldo. He was demonstrating the drill where you stick the butt end of the club in your belly button, and just make the move to transfer the weight on the backswing keeping your belly button in sync as the club goes back. It's easily found on you tube This may not suit everyone but I wanted to share it specifically here, because by using this drill I have eliminated all thoughts of the extremities and focus solely on the core movement. it is a subtle change that may help some on here, because for me it has been an amazing change that was very easy to make. I now only start my swing with the thought my belly button follows the butt end of the club for a couple of inches, nothing more. I recommend this to anyone struggling with sequence and rhythm. 😊

Even Luther Blacklock shows in his videos as a demonstration that Hogans swing was under plane then on plane. Those that have a higher hand position at the top would be above and on plane, Moe Norman under plane and on plane, again not to be confused with an over the top swing that most new players begin with. You need to explain what "exactly" you mean by Over the Top...what it is that YOU are seeing because many people have different ideas about it.

@@MiracleSwingExperience I've seen several videos by you on this. Often you talk about the over the top but don't specifically describe how it is done...you seem to tell people to go to the free month site and you'll get the details there. You provide videos of old golfers and say they're doing the over the top move but don't really specify what to look for. Is it the hands going left? Is it the hips opening up? Is it the shoulders rotating quickly? What is "causing" the over the top movement? More details are needed. Hey I get it... you're running a business and if they go to the site and purchase ... it makes sense to give the info there. But it seems like the videos that are not for money are being kind of vague about how the over the top move is achieved. That's what I'm saying. And if I don't get it...chances are others don't as well.

@@MiracleSwingExperience No... I just find the explanations are not specific. What actually causes the OTT movement? What is the trigger? Is it hands going left? or something else?

@@steveking2144 modern golf instruction suggests the the path of the downswing should be below (further behind ) your backswing. Christo is saying that many of the past's great golfers did the opposite. Their downswing path is above (more forward of) their backswing.

DO u even know what over the top is in the traditional sense? stop selling something just by naming it controversially. None of the pros swings were OTT.

Then you disagree with Tom Watson, Jim McLean, Nick Faldo and many others. I'd wager they know a tad more about this move than yourself, respectfully.

@@MiracleSwingExperience Mclean calls it reverse loop. Not OTT! It's not something new anyway. The club still comes back to the slot. OTT is when your trailing shoulder, hip and hands are all coming over the ball. It's not the same.
