Hi everyone At 13:18 I incorrectly said that the land between the Iguaçu and Parana rivers became known as the Contestado, but I should've said that it was the land between the Iguaçu and Uruguai rivers. My bad

This is a great video! I know very little about Brazil's history, and this video has helped me understand it better. It's great to see coverage of history that gets overlooked especially by those from outside.

Curious: why did even the former slave-holding class withhold from actively trying to reinstate slavery? What made it "unviable"? Did substitute "neoslavery" like institutions develop in Brazil?

Slavery in Brazil wasn't something abolished purely by a royal whim. Like in the USA there was also an abolitionist movement, which also boomed after the end of the Paraguayan War; so for the elites keeping slavery around was increasingly difficult, and when princess Isabel abolished it, they knew that Afro-Brazilians would only grow more powerful from then on. So like southern elites in the USA, they began to make sure that the republican institutions of Brazil never guaranteed black people the rights they deserved as Brazilian citizens. They knew they couldn't bring back slavery without basically asking for a civil war, so they did the next "best thing" and made sure to keep Afro-Brazilians at the bottom.

I'd be on the Santa Catarinan side with the natives and Black people because they had no support at all by the government and they were completely unsupported by the government and they had no one to believe in also my family is from both Sant Catarina and Parana so it was hard to choose who I supported after hearing about it I even have a relative who was born in Paranan Clevelandia over 100 years ago also my mother was born in Lages and my dad was born in Curitiba.

I think it's false to say the navy was more liberal, as it leaned towards restoration of the monarchy and kept internal structures in place similar to slavery, which eventually lead to the Revolta da Chibata (the Whipping revolt) after a black seaman was beaten to death.

Maybe it would've been more accurate to say that the Navy was less conservative than the ground forces, after all, as you said, most of the officers were indeed pretty conservative. Yet there were far more sympathizers of a proper liberal democracy in the Navy than among the ground forces, who were often more sympathetic to the new oligarchic state that emerged from the 1889 revolution. Also it was precisely due events like the Revolta da Chibata that more sailors began to become more sympathetic to ideas of actual equality than their superiors, something that also happened eventually in the ground forces which led to the rise of Tenentismo. I hope I clarified any misunderstandings. Greetings
