"Forgotten" boi Aurora is the 2nd largest city in population in Illinois

The Latino community has been a major driving factor in “rebuilding” Aurora. The homes, the yards, the neighborhood markets have all been refurbished. The east side, which back in 2000; and beyond, was in poor shape. Rundown neighborhoods everywhere. Not so much any more. Our Latino brothers and sisters have taken pride in it, and it shows. Gracias! Trabajo bien hecho!

Aurora is really like 3 different cities. There is the far east side that is more upscale it's like a poorer version of Naperville. There is the west side which is pretty mixed now and then there is the near east side which is pretty much a Hispanic community. They are all one city, but it's like three cobbled together. The real reason anyone would want to move to Aurora is it's one of the more affordable suburbs to live in. They have been trying to revitalize the downtown area and maybe finally starting to have some results, but still a lot of empty buildings.

I have lived in Aurora for the better part of 40 years. The far east side is NOT a poorer version of Naperville. The White Eagle neighborhood, built around an Arnold Palmer -designed golf course, is actually part of Aurora. It has a Naperville mailing address, but is served in every other way by the City of Aurora. (This came about because of politics and snobbery...) There are loads of prefab homes in Naperville built in the 80's and 90's that are no better than similar homes in far eastern Aurora. Also, there are million-dollar homes in West Aurora that rival anything in Naperville. Granted, there are poorer neighborhoods in Aurora (East and West) than one will find in Naperville. This has much to do with long-gone manufacturers enticing cheap immigrant labor from Mexico. Ironically, some of those manufacturers have since moved their operations to Mexico.

I would never say Aurora is forgotten. We have a strong and diverse community and while we are overlooked by surrounding communities, we stand strong as individuals and as a family. Many local businesses exists, Hispanic, black, white, asian, and more. We come from different backgrounds and many far away places but together we are Aurora.
@lightspeed13786 жыл бұрын
Like most small and large diverse cities of America's Rust Belt, Aurora has confronted significant economic challenges in the last couple of decades. Yet, its government and community members have remained steadfast in maintaining its infrastructure: relatively new Fox River bridges, Ohio and Wood Street Bridges, new annexes and remodeling to many of its schools, new development in its downtown core, new library, and so on.... Thanks be to its courageous local government leaders working together with its constituents to move Aurora forward.
@JohnDoe-wj8mq6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like Toledo Ohio as far as maintaining the infrastructure with rebuilding schools, downtown, etc, but is unappreciated here. At least in your city things like that get acknowledged because we get all these new developments just for most citizens to continue bashing their own hometown.

I was born in Aurora in 1990 a week before the Plainfield Tornado. I recall hearing how the west side was mostly white people with the east being black and hispanic. I remember enjoying hearing the West High band practice in the summer as I used to live on the 800 block of W. New York St and eventually I ended up playing trombone in later grade school up to high school. I forget exactly where it was but there was some bakery that was on IL 25 in downtown with a blue awning above the entrance that had the best bagels in town. No, I'm not talking about Jake's Bagels now. Before them. As for the east vs west side, I gave up on that a long time ago like most but physically I was born on the east side just south of downtown at what was the Old Rush Copley Hospital. That building is still up as far as I know.

Aurora is farther from Chicago than other suburbs, so if you are commuting to the city it takes longer. Residents of suburbs like Oak Brook, La Grange, Hinsdale, pay a premium for having a single family home that is a much shorter commute to downtown by car or Metra than Aurora. For Aurora the commute is upwards of an hour unless traffic is really good (when you probably aren't commuting). So generally speaking your upper middle class downtown office workers locate nearer to the city and pay more money, while the lower middle class downtown office workers locate in places like Fox Valley or Oswego. Of course, these are communities, and tons of people don't commute in the city as there are jobs within the area as well. Also, Aurora has a lot more older housing than many of the suburbs around it because it was its own city for decades before the suburbs expanded around Chicago and it was absorbed into them. When my grandpa was growing up in Aurora, it was a ton of farmland between East Aurora and the city. Now it's all subdivisions.
