His final form reminds me of a Shoggoth of Lovecraftien lore. The Lifeform is truly a tragic bastard, but that makes him compelling. Hell, Thanos could bring him up when talking about the cruelty of mercy and how his devotion to death ends suffering, but I'm rambling now. Good character, not nearly enough love.

What a tragic, yet horror-filled story arc. Poor George never did anything to deserve the ghastly curse he be given. Just to know that under all that husk of a creature, there is a living soul who has been trapped inside, begging to die. If only Silver Surfer could understand that leaving George stuck on a lifeless planet was a fate worst than death. Surfer would be doing a service to him, not stealing away his life. But freeing it. I truly hope they can bring back Lifeform and put an end to George's suffering, once and for all.
@j.j.hatter84446 жыл бұрын
(whistles) Wow, wow, and WOW again. Okay, so...I read the first of the Lifeform's stories, but none of the others. Now that I know his full story...my God, I don't know what to SAY. I NEED to look up all four of these annuals and actually read them. Because, truth be told, at least based on your description alone...this may be one of my favorite stories I've heard about, and could easily be one of my favorites I've read, in ALL of comics. It kind of sounds like Marvel meets Resident Evil. I mean...giant mutant blob-beast created by a freaky virus? That's a lot of great Resident Evil baddies in a nutshell. I love superhero stories that really do question what it means to be a hero. Especially when it comes to the "no killing" rule. Not to say death is necessarily justifiable, but in a case like this, where it seems to be the only way to HELP someone? Then you really do have a conundrum. What makes a hero, in my opinion, different from an anti-hero or a villain is the way they value life. If Batman killed the Joker or Ra's Al Ghul, for example, he would be saving countless lives...but he values life for life's sake, and he recognizes that if he crossed that line, it could only get worse from there. A lot of heroes feel the same way: they either don't want to go into that dark place, or they don't want to RETURN to that dark place (which is kind of the situation with the Surfer, by the way), so they resist the temptation. But then you have stories like this where, honestly, death seems like it really is the only way out. Cynical and horrifying as it is, it seems to be the only way for Prufock to be set free and for Lifeform to be destroyed. So the fact the Surfer chooses not to kill the beast really questions what he values, and why. You actually don't get that kind of stuff with these stories as I think many people like to say, and that really does make this a fascinating idea. Honestly, I think it would be VERY easy to bring Lifeform back, and bring a satisfactory end to his story. What if Prufock, abandoned and left to his own private Hell, basically snaps and actually becomes so filled with rage he ends up overtaking the ghastly creation around him. Now HE drives the truck, so to speak. And he decides he's going to go and get revenge on the guy who damned him to this eternal Hell in the first place. In the end, either the Surfer or somebody else FINALLY annhilates the Lifeform...and right before he disappears forever, George speaks only two words to them: "Thank you."
@animation12341116 жыл бұрын

Anyway, hope you do hunt down the other three annuals! ;)

Damn, that's one thing I find truly saddening. It all starts with just someone trying to impress someone else in their life and it's immediately taken away from them. As a previous commenter stated, I would love Marvel to bring back the character only to give him the conclusion he needs. His death. I think it would be great if they got Surfer to end him this time around. Like maybe they could incorporate all the guilt the Surfer had built up from basically condemning a man to his own eternal Hell, make it really haunt him over the years. I can understand not bringing back the character for so long, as you stated how grotesque and dark the character is, plus I believe it would be annoying just to illustrate the character panel to panel. I do find it interesting that The Lifeform kinda rose up to hero to hero in each issue he's appeared. The transition from Punisher to Silver Surfer really boggles my mind.

And to think... the Surfer might have actually done it if he'd just kept his mouth shut. What I find interesting here is the nature of the crossover. It's an escalating conflict which sort of covers the various "tiers" of superheroes kicking around Marvel. It starts with the Punisher, a ground-level vigilante willing and even eager to kill his enemies, confronting a rogue agent of a criminal organization. Then a more powerful Prufrock meets Daredevil, a more colorful character with actual superpowers. And after that he mutates into a hulking behemoth and battles the Hulk, a similar and arguably inhuman figure more fantastical than either Frank Castle or Matt Murdock. And finally he's confronted by the Silver Surfer, an alien with awesome cosmic powers who refuses to kill him. The progression is intriguing, a grim ascension as George helplessly sinks further and further into his living Hell. I can only hope that Thanos stops by his rock one day and sees a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the virtue of death overcoming life.

They should either have The Silver Surfer come to terms with his terrible decision and go back to end the Creatures existence(if it's still alive) or have the Life-form and it's host come to some kind of harmony after years of turmoil, finally assuming a consistent form and being able to exist without agony. One thing that could have happened is that the Virus could have convinced its host of the benefits of it's existence, for the price of the virus working with the host to stabilize its form with concentration and co-operation. They could have a Eddie/Symbiote-like dynamic.

I heard the name, but never read the stories so...yikes, that is indeed horrifying and tragic. I've always advocated for sparing as many lives as possible, but in this case I'm genuinely unsure of what's the right choice; leaving him on the planet and wait for Reed or someone else to find a cure for his condition, which could potentially take years considering Reed's massive schedule, or just end his miserable life and move on, which is what he wants anyway. This is the part where I end up giving some rambly pitch as to how to bring him back (I can't help it - I always think of something whenever I watch these FSVs), but honestly I think there's one really obvious method to bring him back in a big way; He becomes a Herald of Galactus. It's the perfect set-up; Galactus goes to eat the world, finds the Lifeform, sees its usefulness, turns it into his Herald and sicks it on Earth, where Reed could finally use some pseudo-science to either cure or stabilise his condition so that he can control it, and in the end Lifeform and Silver Surfer get Galactus to leave the planet alone once again. After the battle, the Surfer could offer George a chance to explore the universe, and the reformed villain could become a supporting cast member of his. I personally think that's the best way to go with a dangling plot thread like this; his power-set is not designed for a long-term villain, nor would he have any reason to stay as a villain after being cured, even if he was a bit mad with the Surfer for leaving him alive. Give him his big return, cure him and move on. At most you could stretch out his Herald status for a few big cosmic battles battles before curing him, but that's the most I'd recommend doing.
@mr.rogues41456 жыл бұрын
Then there's also the fact that Reed might NEVER find a cure. The story strongly implies that there never will be a cure. Yeah, that could work, although I'm saying that as somebody who knows very little about Galactus. It's interesting actually; did the creators ever intend for Lifeform to return? Or, did they give him this ambiguous ending on purpose? It is a pretty powerful ending after all. Maybe that was their plan all along. I guess we'll never know...
@dannybuckle37636 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, I'd say that they intended for him to be picked up by a later writer, but never was, so he's now just a weird, obscure clip-note in the Marvel Universe's long, convoluted history.

I am happy someone has summarized this story for KZbin. For many years I figured I was the only one who remembered this story. Over the years, I’ve checked to see if George/Lifeform has ever been brought back. And yeah, I agree the Silver Surfer was a fool here. His moral code doesn’t allow for killing but this was a special case where it was cruel to not kill. There was no hope for a cure, George wasn’t suffering from some disability he could learn to live with. His life wasn’t worth saving. Instead of doing the only humane thing, Surfer doomed him to eternal suffering so he could feel good about himself for sticking to his no kill policy.

Silver Surfer served Galactus, a being who killed billions to sat his own endless hunger... The company was actually doing really well in the market with Marvel actually talking about a potential merging with them to create their own distribution network to break up the Diamond Monopoly here in the US. Then the speculators' bubble pop and sales plummeted and poor Malibu couldn't stay afloat. Marvel then bought Malibu at a low price and quietly retired all their licenses but they at least got a good sendoff.

Well, before the Surfer became a hero, he was a Herald of Galactus. He realizes that he is, as such, an accomplice to multiple crimes of genocide, as billions died as a result of his actions. While the Surfer eventually turned on his master, his guilt weighs on him, and it is very difficult for him to actually regress to the point where he'd kill another being. To give another example of this, in one Spider-Man story, Carnage was separated from his symbiote, which would, in effect, doom Cletus Cassidy to an agonizing death from stomach cancer, which the symbiote was protecting him from. Spidey's reaction: He's an unrepentant serial killer, and he deserves it. Not gonna lose sleep over it. And most fans would agree here. (This is SPIDER-MAN here, someone who would not execute Carnage even after the mass-murder committed during the Maximum Carnage storyline.) The Surfer, however, was unwilling to pass this judgement, and let the two reunite. Sure, he left Cassidy in a rather... unpleasant state, sealed in an unbreakable shell of "astral energy" which he thought would hold him forever (it did not, of course) but the Surfer was more willing to spare a heartless villain than even Spider-Man was. That says a lot. Was it the right choice? Probably not. But it rarely is.

I read a lot of Surfer at the time this story came out. The Silver Surfer was on a journey of self discovery and atonement for his time with Galactus. It's not surprising he made an iffy decision like this. It would be cool to have an ending to this as a stand alone graphic novel or something. Maybe an epic team up between the Silver Surfer and some cosmic heroes (FF/ Adam Warlock/ high evolutionary), with some real resolution and perhaps showing the consequences of the silver Surfer's decision. Like have the Life Form escape the planet and cause a massive catastrophe, forcing the Silver Surfer to re-evaluate his decision, forcing him into a similar ethical dilemma?
@hsatin204 жыл бұрын
@Joe Dirt That could be really interesting. Like, his brain has evolved an intelligence which has helped him survive like that, yet it still has human thought processes in there too. It could turn into a story of self actualization or it could go the other way, where his human resentment starts to take over. He could have some good interaction with heroes like the Surfer who has also struggled with concepts like surviving in the vacume of space.

Mr. Rogues When the Surfer did that, Galactus stripped him of his conscience, which he started to regain when he got to earth ,with the help of Alicia Masters.

The Surfer failed to save George Prufrock....leaving his essence inside of Lifeform is something expected of a villain of Doom's status, the Surfer. Believe it or not, I think Doom would kill Prufrock - one of the few times he's shown anyone mercy. How crazy is that?

This would make a great story for a Marvel movie. They could even put it in the MCU as a side story outside of what’s going on with the Avengers.

It looks like George traded being the puppet of his father to being the puppet of a flesh-eating virus. Not much of an improvement. If they ever do bring him back, I hope the focus will be on George finally learning to break free from outside influence and taking control of his actions. Who knows? If he can succeed in this, maybe he can take command of his new body and reshape it back into human form. Or at least be able to destroy himself, rather than put the burden on others.

I'm with you on this, what sense does it make to let a man suffering endless pain just to not break some ethical code? I mean I know that killing, no matter which way you look at it, is wrong. But if the other option means a slower and more agonizing death, then quite frankly, that's not being heroic. Same situation applies with Batman, how is it that he can't live with killing the Joker, who has murdered good knows how many people? Are you telling me that it's more heroic to let an unpredictable genocidal maniac that looks like a clown and is beyond rehabilitation live at the cost of nearly an entire city? I think Batman cares more about his principles than common sense! Anyway, great video.

In many ways the joker wants Batman to kill him, which would mean he has won. It would prove to him that they are one in the same, both just lunatics. Batman does not kill because he knows if he does, he will be similar to the villains he fights, which is too much for him, and goes against his promise to his parents. It is much more than just an ethical code, it is also his mental problem. Any normal person would be willing to kill the joker, but Batman is messed up from his parents' death, which causes him to develop a different kind of mental illness. This is my take away from what I have learned from the Batman universe. I do find the joker and Batman's relationship to be the most interesting I have ever seen. Now the first part of your comment I agree with fully. I would be okay with this with other heroes, such as Batman or Spiderman who have had these traumatic events, but Silver Surfer has never struck me as that kind of hero. I feel this was an attempt at making the story even more depressing, but I really feel like the writer messed up, because if Silver Surfer was to kill Lifeform it would cause this happiness and sadness in the reader's mind. They would be happy he is finally free and feel depressed for such a well written character, almost human like, to die in such a way. It really would have made the story that much better.

Leading Faction Leading Faction The same doesn’t apply with Batman. Silver Surfer’s dilemma asks if it’s ever right to kill someone even when they themselves desire it. With Batman, he has no obligation to kill the Joker if he can apprehend him through nonlethal means. Killing him is the people’s decision. Otherwise, batman would undermine the very system he seeks to protect.

lord freezer I really doubt anyone in gotham (apart from Gordon perhaps) would condemn Bruce's action if he did kill Joker.

Tao Jones T.jones Maybe not. One dangerous costumed madman kills another. Gotham of all places is probably used to that happening.
@leadingfaction67286 жыл бұрын
I know that. I was actually referring to the "no kill" rule most heroes have, and how when you really think about it, this actually leads to repeated pain and devastation. I mean I know Silver Surfer is a pacifist that despises taking lives, but abandoning them to suffer in isolation and misery is way worse. As for Batman, I wouldn't want him to murder all of his enemies, most of them aren't even that violent or deranged, but keeping Joker alive is definitely more amoral than killing him. However I understand your complaint and I probably should have been more clear on what I was saying.

While Silver Surfer made the wrong call with Lifeform, at least Box made the right call with Omega. Made SS should talk to Alpha Flight next time…

to be fair, the surfer likely feels great guilt for leading numerous planets and entire civiliations to destuction and extinction at the hands of his former master, the planet eater Glactus, so he liekly can't bring himself to take any life no matter the reason. at the very least even the surfer acknowledges what he did here wasn't the best, form what I can tell at least

The Punisher Netflix show is dark enough, but sadly, Lifeform wouldn't fit in - being a sci-fi monster and all... Kinda ironic, since Lifeform first appeared in a Punisher issue, but the show is going for a far more realistic, grounded style.

Mr. Rogues I don't know maybe as atleast a movie villian or secondary antagonist he would be really good for a role I mean they didn't kill him off so my guess is they were probably planning to do something with him at one point
