A duo that gets an overlooked from the 80s Alex English and Kiki Vandeweghe. I think the only duo in NBA history to go #1 and #2 in scoring(1982-83 season). They only had 4 seasons together before he got shipped to Portland for 3 picks that actually the Nuggets playoff wise.

Great vid. Derek Harper and Blackman were a great backcourt. Tarpley was the one that was a big problem for the Lakers. If he would have kept things together I could see that Dallas team making the finals one of those years.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I remember, Dale....Ellis, was pissed that he was drafted by Dallas, and had to sit behind Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman. Dallas also had Detlef Schrempf, too. And, that when the Sonics upset the Mavericks in 1986-87, it was the "Revengs of Dale Ellis." I don't think it should be thought of as "revenge." Ellis just needed to get into the right situation. As I put it, "Hey, it's not like Dale Ellis was playing behind STIFFS, in Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman."

Blackman and Aguirre are without question one of the all-time underrated duos in NBA history. They just had the misfortune of running smack dab into a Magic and Kareem Lakers dynasty of the 80's. Otherwise they would have certainly had a legit shot at competing for a championship or at the very least getting to the finals.

Interesting Fact:Both Mark Aguirre And Rolando Blackman retired after 1993-1994 season…..Mark Aguirre:released by the Pistons in December 1993…..signed with the Clippers until being released February 1994 and retired……Rolando Blackman:retired after the 1994 NBA Finals…..played overseas until retiring in 1997….

Also, Aguirre took care of Tarpley for 2 years and kept him out of trouble, year 3 Tarpley thought he could handle himself, we all know what happened then. Too bad Motta was coach, I'm sure they could've found better. When Aguirre was traded away, they fell from 4th to 9th that season, some say because Tarpley was gone, but he was gone two months earlier.

In the 1984 draft, Dallas coul'd have draft Charles Barkley and John Stockton and become a dynastie. Instead they picked Sam Perkins at #4, and Terence Stansbury that didn't even play there, at #15. Barkley went #5 and Stockton #16... great scouting Dallas folks!

That was the era of the big man - and Dallas didn't have one. Nowadays you can get away with having a purely defensive center but back in the 80s - not so much. An all-star center to compete with Kareem in the playoffs would have put Dallas over the top back then.

Blackman was the guy who wound up being the big star that surpassed all expectations. He stayed in Dallas until after the 1991-92 season and made four All-Star teams. In the 1987 All-Star game, he was runner-up to hosting city star Tom Chambers for MVP; an honor that no Maverick has yet to win. He also had his number retired, which is a rare and distinct honor for the franchise. To me, as talented as Aguirre was, he could’ve been an even greater player had he been more coachable. He left Dallas to join a better team with greater star power, proving he could not be the leader he needed to be. I think we are setting the bar too low for the HOF if we try to put either of these guys there. They didn’t make any All-NBA selections and Aguirre only won two titles as a backup, despite his contributions.

Harper, Blackman, Aguirre, Perkins, Tarpley were a force in the late 80's. I really think if Tarpley had not had is addiction issues they would have stayed together longer and maybe won a title but Tarpley got banned from the league after 3 suspensions for substance abuse and the franchise kind of fell apart (all of the aforementioned except Tarpley were eventually traded) after that for a pretty long time until Don Nelson and Mark Cuban showed up and rebuilt the team. I loved watching this team play though they were always entertaining and always played hard.

Aguirre: 2 Titles, 20/5/3.1 split, multiple College awards, multiple POY, 76-10 college record, could and did score from everywhere, played on an expansion team and lead them and then Detroit to 14 series wins. Not in the Hall. Dominque Wilkins: 25/6.7/2.6, few college honours, no titles, no trips to the Finals, only 4 playoff series wins. Poor outside shooter, known because of dunking. In the Hall. Adrian Dantley: 24/5.7/3, very few college or pro honours, no titles, ball stopper, one Finals trip, 8 series wins, teams always improved after he left, couldn't shoot or pass well. In the Hall. Bernard King: 22/5.8/3.3, few college honours, problems with alcohol, couldn't shoot the 3, 2 playoff series wins, in the Hall. Alex English: 21/5.5/3.6, no titles or trips to the Finals, few college honours, still a poor outside shooter, played on a run and gun team that inflated his stats. 4 playoff series wins. On pure stats Aguirre is a Hall of Famer if these guys are. Take in his College and Pro individual and team success (notably playing for an expansion team that got almost no national press coverage) and he's the best of this bunch by far.
