I'm a traditionalist, so I'm glad that this wasn't titled as a restoration since many of the original parts were replaced with modified components.
@jeffreynerdin352211 ай бұрын
There was a reason why the original handle wasn’t round. An oval cross section in the handle allows the user to index it it their hand and know the direction of the blades without having to look at it. This blade is obviously to hang on a wall and will probably never see any practical use, but you should still understand a tool before “restoring” it. You also significantly weakened the handle by removing all that metal at the top, but again…wall hanging.

Exactly my thoughts, nice skills but that clever will never be used as a tool again. His hollow handle is kept together only by that little screw. I have never seen a handle made like this honestly. But again, nice looking

It's incredibly easy to know the direction of the blades without looking at it. All you have to do is hold it and you can feel the direction the weight is pulling you. Weight distribution is how your brain knows how to orient your own body. Your brain is designed more for that than for touching.

The screw not sitting flush would bother my OCD but the handle is beautiful and I love how you got the blade darkened. Greeat job.
@Danielson181810 ай бұрын
I don't know if you've ever done any metal work, but him dipping it in the acid was the easiest thing he did on that build. It looks nice, but also it helps keep the steel from rusting. You don't even need the acid, because some people just use boiling vinegar, and it does the same thing after a few dips. I do it all the time.

Beautiful work. The original brass rings would have been heated and then shrunk onto the wood, causing interference fit. This could have been a stronger fastening than machining a solid billet and bonding the wood to the axe. Beautiful turning work though.

ther reason it looks like wood is because that piece of metal was the result of folding and forge welding and stretching and repeating bunches of time, likely incorporating many recycled chips and maybe old nails or whatever. that looks a hell of a lot like pre industrial revolution forging to me. what a beauty. thanks for giving it that old shine back. definitely deserves it. as a hunter of elk and mule deer i would find this beastie incredibly useful.
@ForgottenShineRestoration11 ай бұрын
Thank you for your feedback, do you really think it's that old? 🐢

If it’s old enough, it’s more likely that is a wrought iron body with hardenable steel forge welded onto the cutting edges. Wrought iron looks like wood grain, just as this one does.

Very attractive redone cleaver and very nicely done. I assume this is a display piece and not intended for use in the kitchen. Because, all those pits you left in the metal would collect bits of blood, bone and even flesh, creating an infectious nightmare I would not use in my kitchen. Still, a very striking piece (pun intended).
