Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Developed by the Soviet Union primarily as an antiaircraft weapon (and used to good effect in that role through World War Two), the DShK heavy machine gun was modernized almost immediately upon adoption. The first batch of new DShKM guns entered production in February of 1945. The final pattern would be formally adopted in 1946.
What we have today is a semiauto DShK built in .50 Browning, which makes ownership and feeding much simpler than with a fully automatic original Russian-caliber example.

LOL! @EvilWhiteGuy7.62
@EvilWhiteGuy7.62 3 жыл бұрын
Idk, I think a simple folding charging handle would have been more practical... imagine having a gun in combat that needs to be charges every couple rounds (which does happen with heavy machine guns often). Meanwhile you got to turn move and look for your charging handle/shell case in the grass/mud everytime time...or have to pull the one you saved out of pocket every couple rounds....idk, it's cool, but not practical

As someone who has fired an m2 browning quite extensively, a large charging handle is a must. You don’t need it often if everything is going well, but if your gun gets dirty, you get a bad batch of ammo, etc, you’re going to want a nice big charging handle for clearing malfunctions. Something like that cartridge operated one on the DShK is going to be a pain in the ass to use from a moving vehicle under pressure

Watching the video, Ian says it was remanufactured in Iowa from a Polish parts kit. So, it was made semi-auto so an American could buy it without jumping through a bunch of paperwork that a full-auto version would entail. And in .50 BMG, an American can actually (at least during non-pandemic times) get ammo for it from sellers in the USA, versus the original caliber which is difficult to source in the USA.

I had an opportunity to fire one of these once. That muzzle brake is no joke, it directs a lot of the gasses back at the shooter, especially if you're giving it a good burst. What a Monster of a fire breathing Dragonov. This video was really interesting, especially showing the parts used for semi-auto conversion. It was obvious that the screws were new due to them being phillips heads. I bought 2 modern American lever action rifles that had phillips head screws holding on the butt plates, which I found extremely offensive. I was able to replace them with slot head screws so now I am able to sleep at night.

For those curious: On a full auto Diegtarev system (except for the RPD), the firing pin is locked into the bolt carrier. If you look here, you see it being kidna cut at an angle. Usually it has a special part that keeps it in the same position relative to the carrier. When the bolt locks, the carrier continues forward, pushing the firing pin along with it. I also retracts it when unlocking, so the original firing pin does not need to be spring-loaded.
