Former deputy director at IMF says Trump’s idea that US can win trade war 'complete nonsense'

As China prepares to impose new tariffs on America worth £35 billion, Sky’s Ian King speaks to Desmond Lachman, a former deputy director at the IMF’s Policy Development and Review Department and Dr Rebecca Harding, economist and founder of Equant-Analytics, on the damage a trade war could do to both the US and the UK. Lachman says Trump is having to pay a “heavy price” for announcing a series of import tariffs on China and “should listen to the markets.” Trade fears caused Wall Street to open sharply lower on Wednesday and also weighed global stocks.

Rekha Bhatt lol.. We just won the China trade war.. Now it's time to eat ur words.. People on the left are retarded anyways because anyone that knew anything about the world, would know that we take in a lot of China's imports, but if we stop taking in their imports their country would literally collapse, because at the end of the day we can make everything we import from China ourselves, not the other way around.. #Trump2020 #AmericaIsBack

How many Americans knows about One Belt One Road? It's an up and coming trade project that will connect Asia and Europe through a extensive trade network... China has been working on this for years. So assuming tariff continues... when this project finish, it will essentially make US tariff meaningless. If US continue to uphold trade tariff in hope to balance its trade deficit with China... it might just means China will stop trading with US altogether. I guess then Americans would get what they want: complete trade balance of 0 = 0.

TLCBonaparte .... yep... another one of those ghost projects that is heading nowhere... it costs 4 times to transport goods by train to Europe as it does by ship.. and any trade in the other direction is not viable. Olive oil from Europe freezes on the train and so has to be insulated... doubles the cost to the end consumer most of whom earn less than $10 a day. China would need to send a train every hour to Europe just to match the goods transported by one container ship... not very practical

+Edwin Gonzalez tell Trump that .I don't think he feels the pinch as ordinary US working class families feel . He was born in an US upper class multi-millionaire's family and has been living in that level of green house since . He does not feel the sufferings that all ordinary US working class families suffer . Whatever he is doing are for his own political gain and future . He does not really care about the well beings and future of all ordinary US working class families . Very soon all US families will feel the quality of lives ,the standard of living are going down as PRICES OF ALL CONSUMER GOODS SKY ROCKETING .Everything we need will be DOUBLE IN PRICE , meaning COST OF LIVING WILL DOUBLE .We ,the working class , have already hit by years of slow economy .Our money is extremely tight .We cannot afford any hike in prices and cost of living . Trump is living in a multi-million dollars mansion .He does not care cost of living doubles . He does not go to Walmart to buy his needs ,or go to ordinary supermarket to buy his groceries . We do . Trump is ruining our US families' future ..

I seriously doubt the reasons of this so called war. China bought soybeans, corns, expensive electronics, oils, natural gas, cars, planes, pork, beef, medications....China can buy soybean from Brazil, Argentina, Russia....its soybeans, can grow anywhere on this planet. Japan and Europe can sell their electronics and cars, Saudi can sell their oil, while Russia can earn money from natural gas....I seriously wandering how this could not bothering him when he makes his minds...

Sir, because the import of metal product is really not a thing for China, not even 2% percent for total. Most of US imported metal products are either from Europe or Canada, Brazil. There is nothing changed since tariff announcement except stock market shock. US bought same amount of metal from foreign countries anyway.

The CEO of Apple says that wages are not significantly less in China. The reason Apple products are made in China is because they have a highly skilled work force with experience in new materials and technologies. The US does not have many people with those sort of skills. He puts it down to their Education System which is geared for various skills (and being a Communist country Education is free, except for some private Universities).

The USA produces 108 million metric tons of soybeans. Argentina (53.4 m.m.t.) and Brazil (86.8 m.m.t.) alone are already able to replace the complete USA soybeans export to China. Some other nations are India (10.6 m.m.t.), Paraguay (10 m.m.t), Canada (6 m.m.t.), Bolivia (3.3 m.m.t.) and Uruguay (3.2 m.m.t.)

+L.J Ross, most soybeans are processed for their oil and protein for the animal feed industry. For human consumption soy milk, soy flour, soy protein, tofu and other retail food products are made. Soybeans are also used in some industrial products. China is the biggest market (60%) that all producers want to sell to. Another major market is the EU (15%). Smaller markets are Iran, Bangladesh, several African and Eurasian nations.

Did anyone else notice that when the U.S talks about trade imbalance’s they never include the “Trillions of U.S Dollars” that they “Scalp” off the top of all Oil Transactions Worldwide each and every year through the use of (Petrodollars) In 1974 the Nixon administration convinced Saudi Arabia to enter into an agreement that saw the birth of the (Petrodollar) using the argument that they the U.S would protect them from the political instability of the region! The agreement reached Guaranteed the Saudi’s a fixed dollar price for their Oil! In return the U.S got an agreement that “All” Oil Sales would be in US Dollars! This Agreement was then expanded to the rest of “OPEC” Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, to standardize the sale of Oil in Dollars (Petrodollars) World Wide! This also meant that any country who wanted to purchase Oil, had first to Purchase U.S Dollars (Petrodollars) at the going exchange rates . Under the agreement the U.S became OPEC’s only sales agent! So The U.S were the ones who took all orders, and it was the US who created the purchase Documents and invoices! In addition to the control of the Oil, under that agree ment the oil Producers have to use a % of their income from the sale of their oil to but US federal Bonds!! In return for invoicing oil in dollar denominations, Saudi Arabia and other Arab states were able to secure U.S. influence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, along with U.S. military assistance amidst an increasingly worrisome political climate that saw the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, the fall of the Iranian Shah and the Iran-Iraq War. However it didn’t take long for the Arab States and other to start questioning the benefit of the security they supposed to get from their deal with the U.S Apart from the constant disputes and conflicts that the US is involved in the Middle East! and the rapid deterioration in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict where the US has obviously taking the side of Israelis was creating concerns! To add to those concerns when they looked across at the US they were not seeing an infrastructure or other changes from the Trillions of dollars that the US are getting from the sale of their oil and the Petrodollar! In fact all they do see is a rapid expansion of the US’s Military War Machine! So after 40+Years many of the Oil Producers, and the countries that have been Purchasing (Petrodollars) to get their Oil. Are saying enough is enough, we don’t want to finance the Very War Machine that the U.S May one day decide to use against us! So now they are going to do their own thing, and today we are seeing the emergence of the Petroeuro, Petroyuan and the Petrorubel. To replace the domination of the Petrodollar!

For the USA to go from a value added (manufacturing is the value) to agriculture is a step backwards !! Agriculture has meany hidden cost like use of natural resources , land , water, water ,water and uses cheap labor only the value added is when we process the food into marketable ( direct sale) this is the value and added labor ..Agriculture is a low labor low wages, the NEW population of America would have to do what we are doing SUPPORT THE MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION..if we had guarded the farm labor and brought them in when needed and shipped them OUT but we DID NOT now we have far, far to meany people to reverse it Agrarian based economy calls for low population, value added is for a higher population and we are now the latter even if we deported the 22 MILLION illegal's we are to populated to live without value added economy

No excuse for USA aggressive economic and military moves all over the world in the names of OFFERING them democracy!!! Can they just mind their own business? However, whatever they are doing is actually to control the local governments for USA’s own political and economic interests in the regions. Americans like to make international rules for everyone but they only follow it if it’s convenient to them. To be honest, since USA didn’t follow UN decision and invaded Iraq for nothing but oil and control, USA’s reputation has already vanished. The invasion has caused millions people dead and hundreds thousands refugees fled to Europe which has not only left the regions in conflicts for decades but also causes the refugees crisis in European countries!!!! The utter IRONY is that neither the citizens of the U.S., nor the bulk of Mexican Americans are too invested in the U.S. style economy. So while Trump's out there trying to force the citizens of the U.S. to adopt his economic ethics, he's overlooking the NATURE of the citizens he purports to be herding into his economy. Now, had he NOT started his campaign with the ethnic rhetoric and the NoDAPL spectacle, he'd have done better at convincing everyone that his economic plans are actually worth the deceit he put on us. So basically, his agenda is undoing his attempt to basically, sell the Mexican American ethical demographic as resource of human criminals, low wage workers, terminally ill patients and soldiers. So how is the Mexican American (Chicano) demographic worth anything, or matter at all?? Well, see how it diesnt even seem to? How long were they here without the vouces of tge rest of the citizen populations? The Latino demographics are the most quiet, humble cultural standards of the U.S., and ALSO (and here's the kicker) the biggest buying, and generally the happiest while working for less. So, here they are, a MASSIVE silent majority. And as everyone can see, there's nowhere NEAR an equal depiction of their sheer numbers, the money they spend and earn, and influence (in any of the U.S. media's, including Hollywood). The blatant anti Native American and Mexican racism of the past, here in the states, has effectively buried the demographic. So, when the Trump gang's economic plan is instilled, it'll be devastated from within. And it won't just be from the Latinos. It'll be from everyone who basically hates to see victims treated like disposable resources for powerful corporations and politicians. Mexican- not European, nor corporate- ethics will dictate the way laws are enforced and who's corporations will succeed. I know that seems farfetched. But that's ok. There's a social & moral trajectory, and victimized psychology that's already shifting it's trajectory. We're ALL get up with a western economy and the policies of deceit that governed corporate capitalism when the Mexican American values and ethics were only hidden seeds that everyone here in the states has within themselves. And since Latinos aren't as outspoken (as most American ethnic, cultural demographics) about the kind of people they/we are as a group, this isn't widely seen or known. The agenda that Trump is working to fgorce through is literally sfo full of the worst of the worst characteristics of a corporate capitalist power, that his face itself sabotages the type of capitalism he's working to get for his richest partners. Remember this quote(?)- "They tried to bury us. They didn't know that we were seeds" -Mexican proverb That's a relevant and deeply intuitive insight. Note it's impact, it's manifestation power and the fact that such an enduring prediction is *anonymous*. How very ethically Mexican. Tribes are the new capitalists.

This soybeans thing is really stupid in my opinion. We can put the land to other use. Grow corn for ethanol. Grow trees for timber. Etc. And wherever they grow the soybeans they will still buy John Deere equipment. It's a win win for the US.

I have spend three decades in the import-export business. The EU has a tariff for everything, until recently America almost had a wide open border. I know how much the EU tariff is for importing an American paperback book. Most Americans have no clue how much the world is taking them to the cleaners. The gravy train is over. To prove Trump's point, the EU couldn't wait to increase their tariff on Levi's jeans, which by the way are produced today in China. I wonder what China's response will be to the EU. The EU NEVER wanted fair trade...

Don't forget russia produce lots soybean. plus China brought 5% of Ukraine land to grown soybean, China’s agricultural land buying spree is around the world. Foods supply for China by China. Maybe US can sell weapons like F22 or F35 to China to reduce its trade deficit.

The idea that the U.S. has no cards to play against China, or any other nation for that matter, is beyond absurd for several reasons: 1 - The U.S. has virtually no absolute needs that must be imported, in sharp contrast to most other nations. 2 - Trade is a far lower percentage of our economy than most other nations; 27% for the U.S., 37% for China, 64% for Canada ...and 83% for the EU. As such, we're far less vulnerable to economic disruptions due to trade issues. 3 - We are not only completely agriculturally independent but the biggest food exporter on the planet and by far. We control more of the world's wheat and corn export markets than OPEC does oil markets giving us tremendous leverage over any food importing nation. 4 - We're overall energy independent and able to be oil independent provided we maintain good relations with Canada and Mexico, both of whom have been exempted from the tariffs. 5 - We carry massive trade deficits with almost every nation on earth, ie they sell far more of their goods here than we do our goods in their countries. What this means is that our tariffs will hurt them FAR worse than any retaliatory tariffs they impose against us. Moreover, funds from the tariffs could be used to help affected industries. 6 - The US has to play in a trade war is our military. We're spending billions in Europe, East Asia and the Middle East, much of which is to the benefit of the very nations taking advantage of us in trade. The actual amounts spent isn't even a measure of their true value either as for these nations to even attempt to develop the same deterence capabilities as we're already providing would be prohibitively expensive. What if, for example, while negotiating trade with Japan or South Korea, Trump decided to reward the crew of one of our carriers in the region with a nice 2 weeks R&R at Pearl Harbor? Or if he decided to pull some of our naval assets out of the Persian Gulf to do exercises with the Indian Navy during talks with the Saudis? Something I think that we and these nations have forgotten, especially since the collapse of the Soviet Union, is that they're vassals to us and maybe its time we reminded them just how dependent on us they really are.
