'It's almost like we're living in an open-air mental health facility. There are people walking down the streets; you don't know if they're going to shoot you, stab you, punch you, spit on you... And we, as parents, are kind of teaching our kids and grandkids how to be numb to the situation.'
Siyamak sits down with Matthew King, former homeless and a community advocate from Sacramento. He has seen the capital deteriorate over the last few years and will talk about homelessness, drug addiction, and crime issues that his community is facing. We also talked to Travis Gillmore, our reporter in the state capitol. He has been talking to the state legislature, the homeless people, and police officers.
'You've got union ironworkers, electricians; you've got a lot of people from various trades who are homeless. We're not stupid people, either. We're very intelligent, and we know how to do a lot of stuff. They're selling stolen items right from the tent.' Mr. King said.

You guys find the best people. I owe a lot to Sacramento. The place changed my life as a young gay guy who had to flee the homophobia of rural east Texas. Sacramento is where I really learned my value as a person and how I finally became an adult. I don’t live in California anymore but I’m so sad to hear about Sacramento. I love the Central Valley and the delta area, and walking on the levees. I’m praying for yall and really want the best for California. God bless you for doing this work. 🙏🏻❤️

Great interview! Mr. King is exactly right, the city of Sacramento has become a dump. The pride in Sacramento is gone, both residents and city employees have given up. To make matters worst, liberal city politicians with their policies and lack of support for their employees have made things worst as all they care about is themselves & their cronies.

But remember, the guest started this with the statement "that ABOUT 30% of the homeless are not addicts just regular people who don't make enough money monthly to pay rent." There are alot of soc.sec. poeple I know of who have lost their housing when their significant other died or something simular to that; and, no drugs involved. We nd a better system. I don't know about u ;however, I do and I look forward to the system that Jesus preached about the Good News of the Kingdom of God; paradise.

In the 1990's, it was a lot easier to get by. Just an example, in Los Angeles, there were older one bedroom apartments for $300 ($600 adjusted for inflation) which are now maybe about $1600 a month. If you have to make 3 times the rent and have a good credit score, getting treatment and getting clean to get what's probably going to be a $16 an hour job isn't going to be sufficient to find a place to live. If someone finds an apartment for less, they will probably get outbid by someone else desperate to find a place to live who is paid more. The drug use percentage is 30% according to official counts but others are saying it's over 70%, so maybe we won't really know. Nevertheless, it seems pointless to force treatment when it doesn't fix the housing shortage and these people will remain homeless anyway and likely just go back to using drugs.

I'm so thankful for you to be addressing this issue - I've also been in this mans world, & his spot on with what his saying Its been quiet a few years now for me since I've been in his world, & I was blessed to never be homeless. However my son had an addiction issue & homeless on the streets of Sacramento. His now been clean for 7+ years. My son & myself both grow up in Sacramento & have seen it go from a town Nicer town, to what it is today. I completely agree with this man one first has to want to change, then be given the help to change. To give an addict person anything with out help of what's causing addiction behavior is not going to solve anything. The mind of the addict has to be retrained first, then the rest can follow. Other wise its like putting a cart in front of a horse and expecting the cart to move. That's like giving a person with an addiction a home & expecting them to clean up themselves, it will never work!!! The hardest part in all this is the person with the issue has to want to change, & what do you do with a person that doesn't want want to change? For me it took almost death....

The other who said about the ruling was right. Since the Homeless advocates won in court, homeless situations got worst. The mayor did a fundraising for the homeless and got more than a million for housing but nothing was done. The advocates are the ones making money out of this. Sorry to disagree about the guy talking about visit every city in the valley and there are homeless encampments everywhere even in parks. Sorry, our city is nearby and we don’t have that problem. We are vigilant when it comes to that. Police are called right away and they are asked if they need to go to shelters. We have programs here to help them.

Yeah, I think his percentage is a little high as far as the drug addicted is more than 70% he said 30% werel not drug addicted so that means 70% are. It’s not a housing issue if you took every homeless person in Sacramento, built them a house and put them in it. What do you think that house would look like in a month two months. You know the answer you can’t throw money at this problem. If you have electricians that are homeless, which is one of the highest demand trades right now why are they? I am 15 years, clean and sober. You have to want help, but there is a solution and thieving and living on the streets isn’t it, it’s not easy but it’s possible.

My homeless drug addict son, started self medicating with marijuana to help with his ADHD, now he's a meth addict and in and out of jail with no consequences, no mandatory help, just right back on streets to do more drugs. Why bother having drug courts if the arrested drug addict never gets in front of a drug court judge? This man knows what's really happening and should be in charge of the programs to help the people. Common sense spoken.

Local government should charge each resident $20 a month to help pay for homeless. I think this will upset enough people to help take care of the problem. Same tactics the military uses to get people in line. If one fails everyone pays, your city is only as strong as the weakest link.

How about accountability for the state of California, decision makers for the city, the organizations and agencies who are capitalizing on homelessness? The state's most "cost-effective" homeless housing program, HomeKey, costs over $177,000 in public funds per unit, typically single-occupancy in converted motel rooms, to get a person initiated into housing. From there, the landlords (masquerading as non-profits) are allowed to charge market rate rent each month, most of which is subsidized by the public. Our tax dollars don't go very far this way, and very few people are getting into housing through these programs before funds are exhausted. Meanwhile, the number of people living outside is growing every day, many of whom have jobs and are behaving responsibly because the cost of living is too high and the pay is too low.
