Early 90's is when CAF took members out of units to replace RCMP ERT. So they are back now? Great interview and mad respect for JTF2.

ERT has a more generic response role now. The issue with the SIRT was all the members were pure counter terrorism in an organization that can't be seen practicing how to kill people all day.

In the 1990s, I was working with the RCMP as a contractor (for mobiles to be used all over the country). Two of the people the team had regular contact were from the RCMP's Field Office (who were helping in educate and trouble shoot these new systems from an RCMP perspective. Those two individuals had been part of the RCMP's ERT before JTF2 took over that role. They did a lot of hostage rescue scenarios (one got partly deafened when a flash bank rolled right under her chair and went off when she was acting as a hostage). They were had snipers and everyone on the team had to be good with firearms. They were trained in operating armoured vehicles both open and closed (NBC protocol). They were very different than other police because they were the 'break glass if a national scenario where tactical response was required'. They were not used as far as I recall and the view of the two members I knew indicated that it was because if they had sent out the ERT, it would have been in a very bad situation and there would be casualties. The political masters were very leery to give the order to engage in instances where they could have been useful. There one benefit over JTF2 was this: Every member of the RCMP ERT was first and foremost trained as police officer. Their experience always being very aware of where a shot would be taken (to be aware of an innocents) is something a bit different how military people saw situations. I have a lot of appreciation for these people and the undercover people from the RCMP as well as most of the RCMP officers. There are less than great members in any large organization, sad to say. Had a friend in the US SF who worked with RCMP members involved in helping Haiti in the 1980s. he said the RCMP members that he rode with were solid, reliable and were very competent. He said he'd gladly have worked with them again. A friend of mine in the RCN was tasked to take a naval vessel (MCDV or something bigger) in the middle of the night while he was out on the East Coast. So he did as tasked. A number of fast RHIBs loaded with operators chased down their vessel and boarded. One of the crazy moves was JTF2 folk climbing the fan tail and one operator setting off the RHIB onto the command deck and he then proceeded to enter the cabin. My friend (the vessels skipper) saw the operator. My friend recognized a friend who had not been with JTF2 when he last saw him. They both smiled at how small Canada's military is...

RCMP HARP was the original program born of the British SAS followed by ERT then SERT was created obviously prior to JTF, a government decision was made as some felt it was inappropriate for police to do Counter Ter ops. Reality the RCMP has jurisdiction on CT operation not JTF. SERT/MSERT/ERT are actively involved in response to these events with a number of operations in this matter. Reality was politics, other issues were budget and pool for recruitment. SERT and ERT trained the first cadres of JTF and continued for many years until overseas operations took over. Combine training was always present but more with specific teams then between programs. Simply due to mutual regional access. The exchange of ideas, experience tactics, laws and other things always present. The same applies between RCMP teams and local or provincial teams also.

Presently the rcmp seems to be running into alot issues. The underlinings say its management thing. It would appear its command structure issue. Seemsnlike way past due for complete internal review to see whats breaking down. Is it just senior brass, command structure , what??????? But it has to be addressed because they seem to have so many departments that they run. Its probably leak tests, bad apples , and conflicting departments or over lap.
