That uptick in the early 2000s was fraud based in many states. In Michigan, we had an uptick in test scores for a decade. We conveniently forgot to mention the uptick was because we kept lowering the standard for success. Everybody kept getting better at passing the exam because we kept saying well you don’t need as many points to pass the exam. It only fell apart when oh my goodness we can’t get any lower than this and everything blew up. That didn’t just happen in Michigan. It happened in a lot of Republican run states. Coincidentally Michigan was a Republican run state during this time frame go figure.

It is the governor and legislature that are responsible for education in each individual state. I didn't like devos, but she just turned a blind eye to what states were apparently already wanting to do. No it isn't. Common Core comes from the states. In fact, Florida was one of the states which played a big role in creating it. Folks really need to look stuff up before spouting off (or voting based on it). So much of what "everybody knows" just isn't true BTW: I think NCLB was terrible and this particular Sec of Ed was pretty bad. I expect Mcmahon to be far worse

@@travcollier NCLB was the federalization of special ed, and common core was the attempted nationalization of academic curriculum. Under 20 USC 7907 it is illegal for the federal government to directly mandate curriculum to the states. So Governors and State Administrators came up with the standards "collectively", but Obama and his "race to the top" incentives coerced a lot of states into adopting them. Just because the fed doesn't have legal ties to common core, doesn't mean their fingerprints aren't all over it. Common core was a Progressive workaround of federal law. That's what activists do

@@mattschrader5047 Common Core was very much championed by several states, including some states now run by politicians who love to demagogue against it. On the merits, the adoption of Common Core caused real disruption, but is generally quite good. Certainly imperfect, but the curriculum points aren't set in stone either. I'm more familiar with the maths part of it, and while it is way too slow IMO, it makes a ton of sense. (BTW: The stuff it is popular to complain about are methods to teach younger kids numeracy and important specific concepts. Not actually "new math".) NCLB is more mixed. The standards/requirements for special ed were very much needed (and a separate federal law from NCLB), but the implementation created lots of problems and perverse incentives. I'm somewhat familiar with that part. My kid is an example of 'early intervention' working... going from pretty intensive special ed, to integrated classes with an IEP, and finally to just needing a couple of reasonable accommodations. He's currently in all the advanced/honors classes available at his school. But I've also seen it fail badly and how the implementation varies massively from state to state (we've moved a lot). If his early education had been in FL instead of CA, I'm pretty sure the outcome would have been very different. However, like Common Core, NCLB gets a lot of misplaced blame too. But overall I think NCLB is a net negative... Though a better implementation of federal standards for (and support of) special education was/is called for. It's a civil rights thing
