VP Al Gore worked very hard to help our nation become stronger in the 1990s under President Clinton. He would have made a great US President. But history followed a different arc and we had "W" for 8 years. I like VP Al Gore. VP Joe Biden is working very hard as well to help our nation and I hope he is just as successful as Gore was.

One of the best things that you, as an individual can do, is to believe that we really have a problem and that we have the ways and means to fix that problem. When enough people clamor for change, the politicians will listen, and change will happen. Some people become activists, some don't. But we all have the opportunity to vote. And we can all help spread the word. This needs to be the number one priority! climate change is where we need to put the majority of our resources.

Great speech by the man who the people said they wanted to be their 43rd prez. Although his claim about this being a close election was false. After nearly 8 years of george w bush and the state of America as of the day this speech was given, this election was not going to be close. I know that Gore had to say that though to lead into his statement about " I know about close elections."

From what I've seen of Al Gore, he's become more intelligent and got liberated from the game of politics when he lost the election, and came out as a better man. If I could have it my way, I'd have someone like Ralph Nader or Dennis Kucinich for President, America's elections are a 2 party dictatorship and democrats/republicans generally have the same policies (just as the whigs / democrats in 19th century both favored slavery, until the 3rd party republicans came in who are nothin like today)

A consumption tax that would compensate for every other form of tax, I'm not sure would work well in practice. I'm not an economist, so I cannot say that with a certainty, but it would be difficult to predict what kind of highly unusual and not-so-favorable business practices it would result in.

I'll clarify: I was speaking half out of jest when I suggested an IQ test for voting eligibility. This is also not to say that a generally intelligent person will necessarily desire what's best for this country. But it has to be taken into account that many are lulled into voting for one side or another based purely on which side uses more or better buzz words, and not based on the slightest bit of analysis of what they will in fact do for (or to) this country.

...Countdown confirmed with the local utility officials that their program, called the Green Power Switch, actually costs more for the Gores -- four dollars for every 150 kilowatt hours. Meaning, by our calculations, our math here, that the Gores actually chose to increase their electric bill by $5,893, more than 50 percent, in order to minimize carbon pollution."

In a differential equations class I took last semester, we analyzed the carbon cycle-specifically the cycle of CO2 in the atmosphere. The mathematics doesn't lie. Even if the temps (avg.) have gone down recently, the lasting effects of of CO2 accumulation remain for decades. The oceans are great CO2/carbon sinks, but it takes many many years for this to occur. Is it possible to reach saturation, maybe or maybe not. All I know is that 6+ billion people and their activities is too much.

Your post that I responded to specified nothing about in what scope should there not be a democratic voting system. Our over-spending is the result of a terrible government, not the democratic legislative system. Taking into account certain things this government spends copious amounts of money on, it makes me want to vomit knowing I'm contributing in the form of taxes. However, taxation is still vital to every component of this country's infrastructure.
@FoxbatLNS
@FoxbatLNS 16 жыл бұрын
The deficit ITSELF is the result of government overspending. Consumerist citizens of the U.S, themselves, overspend and waste tremendously. However, this is independent of the international debt created by the government's overspending. For instance, I don't think it was most people's choice to enter into a multi-hundred-billion-dollar war based on mostly false pretenses.

Without any sort of regulation though, many people wouldn't just donate money to their community or nation, so there has to be a legal incentive. I'm not 100% sure what to think of flat vs graduated taxes. Ultimately, if you take 20% of a person's $300-per-week check, that will affect them far more profoundly than would taking 20% of a $6,000-per-week check. Graduated taxes aren't entirely fair, but they are still reasonable.

No... user1309, I may not agree with you, but respect a well thought out position over name calling any day. Intelligent debate and open mindedness is the only way to make informed accurate decisions. Otherwise there is emotional, irrational name calling. That would make us no better than Bill o'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh. Your analysis of Bush is right on. Gore.. not so sure, but can see where you could think that. I just think he is more sincere. I totally disagree. the deficit is the result of a terrible government. overspending is the result of terrible citizens. if we the people didn't ask and demand so much, they wouldn't have to spend so much. the ONLY good thing I see in john mccain, is that he seems to dislike earmarks. I never said no taxes, I just think there is a better and easier way of collecting them.

I apologize if I misunderstood you. But I'll take Gore for the past 8 yrs over Bush any day! Its Bush/Cheney energy policies, ties to the oil industry I don't like. Also, relying simply on people's good will for something like funding the government, or community services, has not worked well in the past. Perhaps you and a few others you know would still pay your taxes on principal, but you can bet a huge chunk of the population wouldn't.
