My favourite chess grandmaster of all time in action. Rare moments and real dream of most chess players to have an occasion to play against him. I think to play with Misha it´s not a question if you win or lose. It´s a question if you survive! He was the greatest attacker of all grandmasters. He is still living in my mind. Respect forever!

He WAS unstoppable! With the longest unbeaten streak of any tournament chess player then or since. The man was sound but used many psychological tricks to win games which is why people see him as wild and careless, sacking pieces left and right. He was sick and deformed from the time he was born, unfortunately if he stopped drinking and smoking he still would've died a very sick man.

Even though we consider those things to be not good they have some good characteristics. Tal was an artists and banning artists from drinking and smoking is like banning make up from fashion shows or movie sets. It just doesn't look good from someone who is "normal"

Did you guys know that this is how old Tal' looked like when he was just about 50 years old? His contemporaries say he smoked 2-3 packs a day and drank too much alcohol. Take care of your body.

tennisblood Yea. Well to be fair he did have some serious issues with kidneys which almost caused him to die. But even after all the surgeries, after doctors told him that drinking alcohol is absolutely not allowed, he went and got drunk. I read this from memoirs by Genna Sosonko who knew him.

If you speak Russian or if you can find videos by searching for his name in Russian (Таль) you'll see him making some presentations and interviews where you can clearly see extremely aged face for a 50 year old. Very wrinkled and looks exactly what alcoholics and heavy smokers look like due to a lot of micro wrinkles and generally unhealthy look.

It was about the time that Tal came up to my board where I was running Deep Thought II in Long Beach where it co-won the event with GM Tony Miles. I am still wishing I could rewind time and have challenged one of my favorite personages (not just chess) in human history to a pair of games against the machine. It was within my control by I simply didn't. I was quite young and green.

Why is it that on some boards Tal makes his move immediately, while on others he has to think for several minutes? Is it because the position is more complicated? Or the opponent is stronger, so Tal has to make stronger moves, which takes more time?
