Not that I know anything about specific speedruns and should probably look it up but I think it is easier to ask this question: does pausing the game normally pause the timer as well? I know in other kinds of speedruns the timer still goes, but it may just be something specific to this game since it seems like you need to pause a lot in order to perform some of these skips or at least make it easier.

this game is timed with in-game timer (the one in top left corner) because of time bonuses at the end of each level. e.g. if you beat a level under 30 seconds it gives you 50k time bonus, if you beat it in >= 30 seconds it will give you 10k time bonus. 50k time bonus take about 7 seconds to tick down and 10k like 2 seconds, meaning playing slower could be faster in some instances

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Joe Stanski told us: "Take a trained monkey, place him in front of the screen with a genesis controller and he is able to play the game pauseless." Thirty years later Chonkal told us: "I have to pause my game like a TAS. It's very complicated and unwatchable for the viewers." And TeeNTee said, err, he pressed during his Sonic The Hedgehog 2 speedrun, I don't remember what level, the wrong button (Pause) on the controller. Question for you to both. Is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 speedrunning today too complicated with 20 and more tricks with pause buffering in the game, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future, concerning pause buffering, errrm, during the run? Less seconds to pause in the whole run, more? Or less and more comunication with the SRC mods about the rules.

No I don't want to pause my runs to do TAS-tricks (and not pausing like if it's a TAS... Hey, there's no Sonic TAS with pauses... ok maybe one...). So yeah it's complicated to go for such tricks without pausing. I didn't mean that it's complicated to press start a shit-load of times in a run. Here's the correct quote : Runs with pauses are anoying to watch / unwatchable. Also if you have a question for me, then reach me on social medias or discord or anywhere where I could actually see the question. So about Sonic 2... I don't care... (I never really cared for this game). All I see since the past 4/5 years is more and more pause buffering, no matter if it's to do a really super stupid hard trick, or the most fuckin' basic stuff!!! The current rule (which was a joke at first) about pauses is still the same since years. The only thing that change is the amount of time that you can stay in pause and it's still not restrictive at all... In the current state of things, with the current amount of pauses in runs, and how it's shown like it's normal to use pauses (even if it's stopping your timer!!!)... I doubt that something can be done today...

I think being able to do some of these exploits makes you good at the game in a way. It may just be easier than it looks sometimes, but a lot are frame perfect in video games, which is why this streamer paused a lot in order to get it down just right. Playing the game normally is fun and probably has a Speedrun section of its own, but these kind offer interesting exploits that allow for even faster times, which I think is cool.

Using glitches to hit the end of the level faster doesnt count as a speed run so your total would actually be around 6+ hours not under 9 mins so any speed run done with glitches is a fake

@Stuart - That is not true at all. Speedruns with glitches in them are called 'Any%' - meaning you have to just get to the end as fast as possible, using any means possible in the game itself. What you are describing is a category of runs called 'Glitchless'.

I have similar perspective, and I'm sure one can find a "by the book" Speedrun of Sonic 1, just like you can watch a foot race instead of a rocket-propelled drag race. Both can be impressive, but the fastest one is going to be the one that "breaks the rules"

That is why is speedrunning you have multiple catagories, this is an any% record, if you want glitch less then there is a catagory for that and a separate record for that

To be fair some of these glitches are hard to pull off, and to be able to do this speedrun takes years of learning to pull off. By the way the the glitchless world record is 14 minutes. I just thought you might want to know ☺️
