In this scenic travel documentary I take you on an aerial journey through former Yugoslavia, one of Europe’s most fascinating, complex, and beautiful regions. Often overlooked as a travel destination, it offers captivating historic landmarks, vibrant future oriented cities, picturesque mountain villages, a stunning coastline, and friendly, welcoming people.
Although Yugoslavia does not exist anymore as a country, it has left a huge mark on the region. These days, it is divided into seven different countries (that are part of the wider Balkans area): Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. While all these countries have their own distinct characteristics, there is also a lot of cultural and religious overlap.
In this 4K video, I will be traveling with a drone, showing you some of the most beautiful and interesting parts of former Yugoslavia from the sky. From the changing skylines of Sarajevo and Belgrade, to the appealing coastal towns of Dubrovnik and Budva. From hidden monasteries, impressive churches and mosques, to beautiful mountain scenery. From Soviet style industry and architecture to modern office towers and apartment buildings.
As you travel through this area, you also witness some of the visual scars from the Yugoslavia war, which tragically broke the country apart in the 1990s. However, most of the video focuses on the variety that this region has to offer today.
The footage in the video was made in 2017. It is accompanied by calm, relaxing music. For other travel documentaries click here:

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We start our journey in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country with a true ‘East meets West’ feel to it, with a blend of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian history. We visit the tranquil Jajce watermills, Banja Luka and Mostar, and monuments in Tjentiste and Kozara. In Sarajevo, I show the contrast between the old center and the modern suburbs. I also visit industrial sites in Gacko and Zenica, the rural East, the moving Srebrenica memorial, and national parks.
After Bosnia, we travel to Montenegro, a small country on the Mediterranean Sea with a surprisingly diverse landscape. The rugged coastline is dotted with towns like Herceg Novi, Kotor, and Budva, that are popular tourism destinations. Don’t miss Sveti Stefan, a small island that is now a holiday resort. Montenegro’s hinterland is filled with mountain scenery and lakes. Here, we visit the Tara River, Skadar lake, and the arch bridge of Durdevica. We also stop in the country’s capital Podgorica.
The next part of the movie is Slovenia, a place that offers breathtaking natural beauty and fairytale castles. We start in the undeniably attractive Lake Bled, before flying to the snowy mountains of Bohinj, Kranjska Gora, and the Vogel ski resort. I continue towards Ljubljana, one of Europe’s most picturesque capital cities. We also visit places like Koper, Kanal, and Predjama.
We fly onwards to North Macedonia, with its somewhat surreal capital city Skopje. Other places we discover Ohrid, located on a beautiful lake, Krusevo with its peculiar ‘spomenik’ monument, and Matka Canyon.
Serbia is the largest country in former Yugoslavia, and its bustling capital Belgrade also the most populous city, as well as an interesting fusion between historic and modern. The mysterious secluded monastery Manasija is worth the drive into the countryside. We also visit factories in Pancevo and Smederevo. Other highlights include the laid-back city of Novi Sad and the spectacular Tara National Park.
This brings us to Kosovo, Europe’s newest country and an intriguing place to visit. From the capital Pristina, with its eye-catching national library, to the charming old town of Prizren. We also fly over Mitrovac, a complicated, yet attractive small town in the North, and the incredible Sar mountains.
We finish our aerial journey in Croatia, perhaps the most visited country in the region. It boasts some of the most picturesque coastal towns, like Rovinj, Sibenik, Dubrovnik, and Pula, with its well preserved Roman amphitheater. The country also has some beautiful islands to explore, and its capital city Zagreb offers a mix of culture, great food, and beautiful architecture.

@Married Texan Actually, only two of ex-Yugoslavian countries have entered EU since (Slovenia and Croatia). I presume Dalia emmigrated to some western European country during the war, if that's the case, she became an EU citizen much sooner than those that stayed here. Also, all the nations except Slovenia have much lower living standard than the average EU citizen, and are mired in corruption and bad politics - so even though the countries themselves are beautiful, living in them isn't.

@@photographychannel3875 I absolutely agree. When you look closer you will see everything was done to prevent Serbia and Serbian people from being big and dominant in Yugoslavia. We pay the price for those autonomies even nowadays. Kosovo was always part of Serbia. Luckily Serbs are big majority in Vojvodina so they couldn't cut it off from rest of the country. They know what they were doing and still doing.

I entered the real kingdom of moisture: it invades from everywhere, covers everything with rust and mold, dissolves and suffocates everything. We are raised by evening snails and tormented by nightly attacks of colic pain - and always dirt, stench, rot; everything is constantly turning into garbage, falling apart before you even notice it... In winter, the rooms in Stara Gradiška are not heated. The corridors are completely open, they only have bars. The small stove burns only in the "living" room. We take turns: some go in, others go out. There are 300 to 400 of us in the department, and in the "residence" there can be no more than a hundred of us at once. We alternately warm up and freeze: "in the living room" we languish in a daze with the hot and smelly air, we huddle in the hallway and shiver as we walk. And above the roof, white, woolly wisps of steam rise non-stop, which erupts on the sets of pipes through which the steam passes from the prison's boiler room to the settlement, where the staff working in the prison live.

@@be5249 Dead as a dodo your beloved Yugoslavia is. I can see you're still crying about WWI, WWII, and SFRY. So you're sorry Serbia didn't kill enough people after WWI??? Yours were police, secret police, army, diplomacy, the capital... "Shut up" - is not the world I live in. I live in a free world and can hardly be silenced. Unlike your pariah state and pseudo-democracy with the little tsar, his puppy (AB) and Pink TV. Broz might have been half-Croatian but the state was yours, not ours. That's why it collapsed so instantly and infamously. Too bad all those Yugo-sentimentals didn't stay with you in Great Serbia. Too bad your king was too greedy and swallowed too much in 1918. The sick narrative has been propagated from Serbia since the 1840s and especially in the last four decades. That's why you're 3x poorer than Estonia and lost Kosovo. But now you're more or less alone (with Belarus and Russia). Just who would buy your toxic narrative and twisted reality?

This was written by a Croatian writer about a Yugoslav prison during the rule of the SFRY "Almost every day, one of the prisoners swallows a spoon or a piece of a spoon, sticks a knife in his stomach (taking care not to injure the intestines... which is not always easy for everyone), cuts off a piece of his flesh... in order to get out of prison at least for a while Stare Gradiške. They run away from hunger, from beatings, from cold, from humidity, from solitary confinement... Just to rest in the hospital! Sometimes, in the afternoon, for their own amusement, the teachers on duty and the bosses who were on duty organized boxing matches between the prison's lunatics. The winner was rewarded with cigarettes. The poor fighters would fight incessantly, foolishly, but persistently and mercilessly. Those humiliating scenes caused a storm of laughter and cynical cheering. In such moments, I was particularly saddened by Slavko Rajs, an infantile young man from the outskirts of Karlovac, imprisoned for his reckless behavior and reckless outbursts. I tried to save him by giving him paper and paint for painting, because he enjoyed painting. When I was released from prison, they took away my entire collection of his watercolors and drawings. By chance, I saved a drawing, which is a poignant testimony to both that and Stara Gradiška; namely, he wrote a dedication to me on it that reads: "This is a place cursed by God - an eternal memorial from the good and faithful Rajs Slavko."

I am Macedonian. I still can’t believe we are separated. Because I do truly love all Yugoslavia and the People the same before. Nothing change for me and also the border haven’t change for me and I believe for most of the former Yugoslavian people. I hate bad and dirty politics. We have everything we needs and wanted. From mountains, rivers,Adriatic and natural beauty. For season you can easily see Beautiful Winter Snow, and all others seasons . We was in Sport on the top 10 rankings listed in the World. Just to mention Sarajevo Winter Olympics Games. The biggest Soccer Star Brazilian Pele chose to play his Last game against Yugoslavia and say good bye.Much and much more. I was very proud be Yugoslavian/Macedonian. Tito build Yugoslavia and was holding as together on the best way he can. We was very happy people on this planet. The bad influence of politics got inside in the people first from domestic politicians after from Western World. And Yugoslavia finish in the most brutal way that i never can imagine. I am sad all up today and i will be unhappy to my last day off my live. So sad Thank you for this beautiful Video who returned me in my childhood where i grow up as a very happy. This was written by a Croatian writer about a Yugoslav prison during the rule of the SFRY Almost every day, one of the prisoners swallows a spoon or a piece of a spoon, sticks a knife in his stomach (taking care not to injure the intestines... which is not always easy for everyone), cuts off a piece of his flesh... in order to get out of prison at least for a while Stare Gradiške.

The martyr city of Sarajevo was at the time very oriental and I cherish its memory (it was a long time before the Olympic games).
