Hi Stef, my parents left Sicily in 1949/50 never to return until 1979 when I went with them. I have since returned another 2 times yet I yearn to learn more about the Island they left. The more videos I see of Sicily, the more I wish I had the opportunity to have 'lived the roots' of my ancestors. I will revisit and soon. Thank you for sharing, would love to see more of Messina and the provinces e.g. Librizzi, Patti where my parents were from.

Super Great job Stef. What you captured on video and also the information you gave were top notch. I am Sicilian and will be returning there permanently in a very short while. I like that you went out in the 'cyclone' for a great meal, because that's exactly what I would do. But you are right to heed the warnings given as well of course. Sorry I missed seeing the snow. When I read the monumental Ab Urbe Condita Libri, by Tito Livio, something struck me as strange. During the II Punic War, Rome sent Roman soldiers who survived the catastrophe at Cannae to fight in Sicily. Marcelo's men, who saved themselves by retreating from the battlefield, would remain in Sicily for the duration of the war in Italy. Apparently this was a punishment for the dishonorable escape from battle, because their life away from their families would be much sadder, more difficult and dangerous than on the continent. This documentary shows a beautiful island, but with a somewhat unpleasant climate. Not to mention the earthquakes and the danger arising from the ever-active volcanism in Sicily.

Hi Stef, I’ve been following your videos for a long time and I greatly respect your work on many levels. Your video of Ethiopia is just outstanding. I am learning how to create videos and I have some observations and perhaps questions. In your earlier videos you seemed to use a tripod quite a bit as there was zero movement. If that was the case, wasn’t it rather cumbersome and inconvenient (though it yielded perfect quality)? I noticed in the Sicily video that most of the land based footage is handheld. Do you use a gimbal? Also, action cameras like GoPros are rather limiting in that you cannot control the depth of field so where do you elect to use them? I assume with scenes such as holding outside the moving car in the rain, and very low near street level. Oh, btw, you might wanna pick up the DJI mics. I just got them and they are quite good at suppressing wind noise. They have many features that you’d like. Great little system. Anyway, I’d enjoy chatting and thanks for making such wonderful videos.
@stefhoffer Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your kind words, I'm happy that you're enjoying the videos. Yes, I used to shoot a lot of static footage, sometimes on a tripod, but mostly on small bags filled with rice or beans (was a great little trick). Cameras have really progressed these days and it's easier to shoot good handheld footage as you know. In Sicily I did use a gimbal for a lot of footage. GoPros are useful for more unusual situations and angles, but you're right that they offer less manual control. I will look into those DJI mics, thanks for suggesting, and good luck with your video work! Best wishes, Stef

Such a great video, well presented and narrated, thankyou. I’m going to Sicily next year for one week. I’m staying in Giardini Naxos and will explore the east coast predominantly. Do I really need a car? My preference would be to use public transport if it’s available up and down the coast. If we go to Agrigento, is the transport available? Thanks again, Robert, Sydney Australia.
@stefhoffer Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words Robert, glad you liked the video. I honestly didn't explore the public transport options, as I wanted to rent a car for the whole island. But I did see plenty of buses going up and down the East Coast of Sicily. There are also train services. Enjoy your travels there next year!
