Onew wrote all the songs on this mini-album including Beat Drum. You asked if that’s his style. He’s said in interviews recently that he wants to try everything and doesn’t want to be stuck in one style. Dice is also pop and you’ll definitely love it. I knew you’d love Onew. He, like the rest of SHINee, is a complete artist and his voice is one of the most unique in all of world music. Now you need to see this and the other musics frim his mini-album, live! What unique about Onew’s solo is that no matter how different each albums that he released are on the surface, the core of his music has always been about healing. Voice, Dice, Circle, Flow, each of them more or less have that healing quality. For Voice, I think it was what SM wanted him to do, and what general public has always expected him to do - ballads. In a way it was a good start to showcase his voice. But after that, he quickly realized that he wanted to show more, so he started to explore during Dice, which he showcased the different genres he is capable to do. He actually received demo for Circle before he did Dice, but I think he did the right choice releasing Dice first as it is a good transition from Voice to Dice. If Voice showcased his voice and Dice showcased his genres, I believe with Circle, he successfully showcased his musical identity. He did co-produce the Circle album along with his A&R team (not written in the credit, but he admitted it during a fansign). That gave him a taste of producing and since it was successful for this Flow album he was determined to try again this time, with him in a new company that gives him more freedom and control over his works, I believe that this is the closest he’s ever reached to his personal artistry. He really has grown really well over the years as a solo artist, and I can’t wait to see more.

One of the things I love so much about Onew is that Circle and Beat Drum are extremely different songs, but they are both so undeniable Onew. He has such a wide range of ability but manages to truly put himself into everything he does. I would say that Voice (his first mini-album) is like a precursor to Circle; it's very ballad-heavy, and the title track, Blue, is devastatingly beautiful. Dice is much more similar to Flow in that it leans very pop heavy. I also think he has a few B-sides that you would really enjoy: Sunshine (from Dice), and Maestro and All Day (both from Flow; All Day was actually a pre-release single). All Day in particular I think is more of the lo-fi/chill pop that you expected from Onew, and he does it extremely well.

Beat Drum is very different from anything Onew's done before! He was quoted saying he wanted this recent album to contain songs more geared to festivals / live performances. Personally, Circle is still my absolute favourite album from him both sonically and conceptually, but I'm happy to see him branching out into other genres and exploring too! 🩵 Onew's voice is unmatched in the industry and anything he sings ends up sounding amazing. Genuinely all of Onew’s albums/title tracks have a different character to them! His first solo title track Blue is a ballad from a ballad-heavy album (Voice). Dice is synth pop that’s on the lighter side. And then, obviously you know all about Circle 😅 I’d say that musically, beat drum is closest to dice just in that they’re both pop songs, but the character of the song is totally different. Heavier beat, more rhythmic and dynamic. And the rap part is *totally* new for him. He’s been saying lately that a goal with his music is to explore different sounds and techniques that appeal to him regardless of genre. and you can definitely see that on the Flow album! The tracks cover quite a wide spectrum musically, but all still feel very much like *him*. Also, he collaborated on the lyrics for every song, so they all represent his current thoughts and feelings to some extent. This is particularly true of the songs hola! and shape of my heart. I also think it’s worth noting that his new company was started from the ground up by his longtime friend just back in March. That friend is the former manager of Block B, Zico, and Boynextdoor. I definitely think that his influence played a part in developing the more rhythmic sound of beat drum and in encouraging Onew to experiment with adding rap to his repertoire. Thanks for the reaction! I really enjoyed your perspective 😊 Oh! By the way! When you do check out the Flow album, pay attention to the last song “Focus.” It was kind of mind-blowing for me as a fan how different the sound is for him, but it’s shockingly good and he’s said that it’s his favorite song on the album. He also said that he made it specifically with festival performances in mind. He recently performed it live for the first time at his fan concert and that stage was incredible! Once you’ve listened I highly recommend checking out some fancams of that performance!

Have you heard his first album Voice? That's another masterpiece, that one is more on the classical side and another religious experience, I may say, then Dice is pop, then in Circle he went back to classic with a hint of pop, and then Flow, which name says it all 😅. He is a very versatile artist and he has a wide range, he can do anything, sing soft notes, high notes, belt like crazy, rap, he can even do opera (by the way you should check out his Nessum Dorma cover, he hasn't any training in classical music, but even other opera singers that have listened to his cover said he did amazing for a non opera singer, he hits some crazy notes and has ver good control) he has one of the most unique voices in the industry, a ver underrated artist!

SHINee was never underrated. They are the most active and stand out group of 2nd Gen in this era. Their discography is vast and iconic. Most of their songs are well loved even within Korean GP. What primary school student in Korea wouldn't know "Ring Ding Dong" or "Replay"? Their influence is all over what is KPop today. There are a lot of Shawols in the KPop industry and well-respected with younger KPop idols. They are gaining new fans with every comeback they release even their solo work. They may not have all the awards or the or making chart-topping albums & singles like newer groups have. But they will always be memorable for anyone that likes KPop since the early 2000's up to now.

SM really kept Onew in a box. No wonder he was so sad. They only used him as a main vocalist, but he can really do everything. Just like Taemin, he wanted to make his own songs and they wouldn't let him. So he got out, and now he has complete freedom over his music and concepts.

I loved your reaction!! Onew definitely knocked this one out of the park!! His first solo debut mini album was ballad heavy (as was kinda expected of him) and then Dice was the album he wanted to showcase his versatility. But then Circle came and now Flow?! Truly a variety of genres and an impeccable discography... and that's just his Korean releases!! His Japanese album is pretty amazing, too!! Which I suppose is to be expected by any SHINee member, trying any and all things and killing it!! All of the SHINee soloists (which is every single member) have such different solo styles but still sounds like SHINee. They've also been hitting us with solo projects back to back to back and it's hard to keep up! Taemin with Eternal, then Key with Pleasure Shop, then Onew with Beat Drum, and now they just announced Minho's first full-length album Call Back coming out on Nov 4!! Hope you can check it out when it gets released!!!

Yep, beat drum is the title track for his FLOW album! If you go to his official KZbin, you'll be able to find live videos he did of the album songs beat drum, Maestro, Hola!, and All Day. And more will be posted soon, filmed at his recent fan-concert. I think you'd really enjoy listening to him live. :D DICE is also pop, but quite different from beat drum! And DICE (the album) was critically acclaimed, after which Circle was rated highly by Billboard, so really he's been on a tear of good music. Meanwhile, his song Blue, from his first EP, is absolutely nothing like DICE, O (Circle), or beat drum. It'll definitely surprise you. (I don't know if you're interested in seeing artists record? But if you are, there are many videos of him recording both his and SHINee songs on SHINee's official KZbin channel. Really interesting stuff!)

I'm glad I stumbled upon your acc. I spent hours binge-watching your reaction videos on SHINee, old and new. I have being a SHINee fan since 2008, there's time when so much things felt familiar, like I was desensitized to them. Tbh, since last year, I started to detach from being such a rigid fan. So much happening in kpop industry, and the world, the toxic side of fandoms, mine or others, kept popping up on timeline, and my own personal life issues, I was overwhelmed. I have been unappreciative of SHINee releases and works. I used to be very attentive, making up theories and my own interpretations, noticing all the small, small details, and I'm not anymore. I still love SHINee, and keeping track. Sad that I let whatever they were, take away my joy of being a shawol. I was in a slump. The reason why I shared these is because, watching your reactions felt so fresh. It lit up something in me again. I enthusiastedly responding to you like, "I know right? He is that good! Yeah, that's my SHINee!", like that. There are things you pointed out that I missed noticing and ungraciously consumed. It's not that SHINee was lacking, but it was me all along. 15:22 he explained in one of his fansigns that from the start of the MV, Onew #1 has been finding Onew #2. This is why there are people with him trying to listen by the walls, on the floor, in the elevator, etc as theyre helping Onew#1 find Onew#2… and in the end, Onew#1 was able to chase Onew#2… only to find out Onew #2 is also him! He is himself. THAT is also him. Figuratively, that’s YOU trying to find your own charm & chasing it, when actually, you have it already - you just gotta realize that! The joy this brought you is infectious. I did enjoy this on the first few listens and i think hearing your thoughts made me appreciate it even more. Onew's Circle also made me emotional and so I was not as in love with this album as that one but I'm gonna come back to it and see what I think now. I totally agree that Taemin and Key released some of their greatest work with Eternal and Pleasure Shop. 🎉 excited to hear Minho's solo sound oh so soon!

What I love about Onew is that everyone, especially SM, expected Onew to sing in a specific style. His voice is not a typical pop/hip-hop/house/jazz voice so I think it throws people off when they hear him doing music like this. Sure, SHINee does all of these genres, but SHINee is a 5-member group. We're talking about a solo artist. Same thing with Taemin - his voice is not typical of the kind of music he does now. This entire album is a musical journey and he excels it so wonderfully and artistically!

dice is also a happy jumpy song. so is sunshine. But it's also different from this one. I think tho, his "personal" style is Circle. He loved it as soon as he heard it, which was before he released Dice, but I think he wanted to do something very poppy for the people first. There is an album - it's pretty cool

Love that you’re a Babywol. This has been such a learning experience for those of us who have been with SHINee for a long time because, while SHINee has always been a more experimental group, seeing what Onew and Taemin have been able to do after leaving SM has really shown how much of a box they had been put in. Even Taemin, whose solo career has been going on for a while, his new stuff is still a new frontier and one that he probably wouldn’t have been able to explore if he stayed with SM. One of the first things did as soon as he got off SM was set up his tour to go to way more countries than they’ve ever sent him to, so that was so indicative of why he left. And now he’s been so much more active in writing and producing his music! Can’t wait for you to discover Jonghyun‘s music. I hope that his no longer being here *physically* doesn’t prevent you from wanting to experience his solo work because it is just as incredible.

I'm sitting here just smiling from ear to ear at your reaction to the Leader of Shinee, as it was pretty much my own reaction the very first time I heard him sing the first line of Lucifer so many years ago. Lee Jinki is such a versatile artist and has, imho, one of the most amazing and distinct voices in Kpop. Like all Shinee members, he is also an amazing all-rounder. Oh, and apparently he has a PhD in Music too. In the last few years, he has been trying various styles and trying new activities. I mean he's such the epitome of modesty he doesn't even have piercings, and yet he knocked us into orbit by performing at Waterbomb. (I'm still orbiting the Andromeda galaxy, so please excuse me if I'm gushing...) I’ve been a fan of this guy since I was 12. I’m honestly shocked by this song lol. Always thought he’s a ballad guy and this release is so in tune with the times as well. Amazing show of his vocal capabilities, didn’t even need high notes to notice the beauty of his voice!
