Condensation will damage the timing chain prematurely

There are loads of videos about this , but yours is the best . The others all seem to have the engine out of the car on a bench , but you show how to do it in situ. Yours also is the best and clearest filming where you can actually see what you are talking about. Some of the others out there have been filming in the dark in a coal hole . To sum up absolutely excellent work . Keep it up 👍👍

Thanks for the great video! I have a b200 turbo that rattles every 2 weeks or so. Should I actively looking to replace the timing chain? I replaced the tensioner but same issues after couple weeks and also, would a bad serpentine belt cause a rattling noise too ?

Do you have any advice for how to replace the hydraulic lifters on the engine? There is not much information online and i am finding myself zooming in on your videos to try and see if i can remove the lifters without taking out the camshaft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thank you very interesting video, exactly the issue I have had on a B class - replaced the tensioner but the rattle is back and now sounds awful, I’ve been trying to find a garage to fix it but no luck! It’s also interesting to see that you did not drop the engine but gained access through the rocker cover, can I assume you split the chain join the new to the old and pull it through? Really enjoyed seeing another method!

Great videos on your channel. My car had the noisy cold start up as your other video talked on, but now we the chain has broken. The starter spins and the lower pulleys spin, but the motor seems to remain still. If the chain broke, then there must be some parts down in the bottom under the crankshaft gear. I assume this mean pulling the entire motor out. Is it even worth trying to fix the chain is broken? Maybe just too much time and effort.

Hello, thank you for the explanatory information. I own a 2009 A150. Timer chain noise is heard when the engine is started cold and goes away when it warms up. I think it's time to change the chain. My vehicle has 190,000 km. My question is; Is it possible to replace the plastic guides without completely removing the engine? Or would it be enough to just replace the chain and tensioner? Thanks in advance for your answer 🙏🏼

Wow, thanks @Forrera for making this video and your insight 👍 @2:47 camshaft timing mark for TDC @4:18 crankshaft timing mark for TDC @5:25 crankshaft timing mark for TDC - easier to see (engine on hoist) Couple of questions please: - when rotating the engine using the bolt on the crankshaft pulley, does the direction matter? - at what point do the timing chain guides require replacement? - you spoke about short runs and condensation causing issues with the timing chain. Anything else such as engine oil change interval? - from my understanding the petrol model suffers from timing chain issues compared to the diesel. Is this true and why?
@forrera16810 ай бұрын
The reason you must turn the pulley clockwise is the bottom part of the chain must always be tight, and if you rotate it anticlockwise the chain might jump a tooth.
@forrera16810 ай бұрын
The guides are included in most kits, but, fitting them means removing the engine. The crankshaft pulley bolt is probably the tightest bolt in the whole car and requires special tools to undo. Of course this will cost a lot more money.
@forrera16810 ай бұрын
The car will remind you when the time comes for an oil change. Once a year is ok, even if you do very little miles, that's because of the condensation.
@forrera16810 ай бұрын
I think most people don't other replacing timing chain in diesel engines because they cost a lot more. I'm one of them.

Thanks you very much for this in deep overview. Does the chain clip come with the chain kit ? If not do you have a reference to share please ? To change the chain I believe you said we have to dislink a link , relink with the New chain and turn the motor to let it go into the chain path. When all the chain is in we unlink the old chain from the New and then we close the new timing chain with the clip. Is it the strategy ? If the old chain was very loose how Can check that there isn't additional damage to the head engine ? Thanks for your hardwork !!!
@forrera16810 ай бұрын
The link comes with the chain sometimes but it's cheaper to buy a link separately and a close chain.
@forrera16810 ай бұрын
Loose chain does not damage the head. Worst case scenario it will cut through the metal cover and start leaking oil. That's if it doesn't break first

Hi. Is it acceptable to just shorten the old chain by 1 segment? Thank you
@forrera1684 ай бұрын
This is not possible because every link in the chain stretch and don't fit the sprocket properly anymore.

Good afternoon Mr. Sevan. How did you put back the valve cover ? Because there is no gasket, so you need silicon, the mine is leaking on the belt side qnd going up to the coil wires, and I have to do the job on my car. It's said 24 hours of cure isn't it ? Thank you W245 B200 2006 near 200K

@@federicotorresbordils7624 yes, you need to use sealant, but you must clean it well. It always works well with no leaks if it's cleaned well and use quality sealant and it doesn't take long to dry

The noise in my car is only heard when the engine is idling and it started to sound recently. The engine has 250k km on it. I am thinking of changing only the chain tensioner as it seems that it can be done from the outside without having to remove the engine. My car is a 2007 w245 200 cdi. Do you think this can solve the problem?
@forrera1685 ай бұрын
Diesel timing chain is totally different from petrol. It's harder to replace. So I would go for the tensioner first as you suggested.
@carlosrodriguez-escudero37785 ай бұрын
@@forrera168Thank you for your reply! Is it easy to replace the tensioner or it’s necessary to remove many parts to access to it? Another question is if it should be installed with the pusher pin retracted and then it will expand to working position when starting the engine? Thanks for you help!!!

You don't need to dismantle it, you can use compressed air to the pipe on the side of the cover, and the 2 small pipes inside the cover.

can a bad timing chain also cause a foul smell in the car when accelerating hard?
@forrera16810 ай бұрын
There are other symptoms of loose timing chain, rattle at start, rubbing sound on idle, fault code regarding correlation between crank and cam shafts, cutting out at low speed etc. As for the smell, engine oil level has more effect on that.
