Do you guys think the run and gun style that Colossal is doing with it's de-extinction work is the way to go? Or should there be more research and published papers before making such giant leaps in scientific progress in a short period? Let us know below 👇
@mikelopez2585
@mikelopez2585 2 ай бұрын
I believe they should publish “papers” to share the science and knowledge they have gained. Unless they want to keep their information private and not allow anyone to learn from the steps or mistakes they’ve made

While I don't think they should be "focused" on putting out papers, I do think they should put out some. Jurassic Park is a good example of what happens when someone gets too focused on the goal and gets blind sided when there's no one to criticize the process and then misses a tiny detail that turns out to be really important.

You guys don't get it, do you? Billionaires are just people like you but with more resources. They will do exactly the same things that you would do if you had unlimited resources. The Indian Billionaire come from a very traditional Hindu family and they are pure vegetarians. Family is the centre of their world and everything that they do is based on that. Ask yourself, what you would do if you have unlimited resources. Remember, when you get rich, your target moves with you. So, you might not think that you have become sufficiently rich. What is the thing that you would want, if you had no resource restriction and you are an American? I will say it and tell me if that is correct. As an American, the most fundamental thing for you will be "complete freedom". If you don't have to explain what you do, why you do to anyone. Ask yourself this, "Do you like paying taxes?" I have not met a single American who wants to pay taxes. In India, traditional individuals understand that paying taxes is a duty and everyone should pay their taxes. Today, you will find many people crying about taxes because of the American/Western influence. So, what these American Billionaires are doing is moving a major chunk of their economic activity out of the jurisdiction of any governments. Say, some centuries later, they are mining asteroids and generating wealth, will they be needing to pay taxes on that income? No. You have to remember, no government has jurisdiction in space.

If you believe Ben when he implied timelines and resources are what is stopping them from sharing results, I’m sorry but you’re a moron. They are in this for money and nothing else, and sharing their results makes barriers to entry for competition significantly lower. They’re absolutely publishing their results internally, they have to spec out results. Turning those specs into an academic publication would take an experienced researcher less than a day. It would take an intern with access to AI less than 3 days. The implication that publishing results would somehow slow them down is a hilarious shield for people who don’t understand how publications work.

Bezos sure is but SpaceX isn’t a commercial business just in a space race against another billionaire. It already provides cheaper and safer ways to get satellites in orbit, which we are very dependent on these days for many things. Also, pioneering space exploration has brought us a lot of useful technology, stuff you use every day without even knowing it originated in the space industry. MRI’s, battery powered tools and sooo much more it literally is the best bang for your buck when talking about return on investment. Worth every penny.

My only concern is that it could be another Theranos situation. Maybe things aren't as far advanced as they actually are. When companies land huge fundings strange things can happen. Wasn't the Mammoth suppose to be back in 2025 and now it's 2027. I just really hope dates don't keep getting pushed and we are sat here in 10 years still hearing there is potential. Seems like people could be getting extremely wealthy without ever showing results at this point.

I don’t know how to feel about colossal’s decision to not academicly publish. On one hand, they should focus on their work and there some flaws with the current system. On the other hand, they could be something that might have been overlooked during the experiment. If other scientists outside of colossal can’t see the methods in a paper, than colossal losses out on any criticisms or suggestions that they could learn from to ensure they are on the right track. It is a little concerning since there is anti science sentiment growing more and more.

I was dying to go to AnimalCon. Instead I had to deal with a damn hurricane. If it stays in Florida, I’ll be there next year come hell or high water.

I'd rather actual work be done than time being spent on writing a paper that isn't likely to accomplish anything quite frankly. The scientific community is already full of people more concerned with getting famous through publishing papers instead of actually accomplishing something.

17:30 I think colossal should be publishing their findings, it is vital to the scientific community that other laboratories can replicate and confirm the accuracy of their experiments, I know it would slow them down to write research papers, although I bet it’s more about keeping this technology to themselves for financial benefit

This is what I was thinking. A huge part of science is peer review and we're talking about living and breathing animals here. Without publishing their research - their work can't be peer reviewed properly and challenged appropriately.

Lol that transition to the ads I thought pretty litter was making slimy orange shit in rivers! I hate pretty litter tho, it's sooo fucking expensive and the silica dust cannot be good for cats..check out pine pellets. with 2 boxes, one smaller on top with small holes poked in the bottom and one larger beneath it. The piss turns the pellets into sawdust which you can sift with the top box. The pellets dry out the poop and you jus bag it. This has changed my life

All Oil Money baby... See environmentalist can cry as much as they want about banning oil but they dont have any viable alternative to Oil and the massive things achieved with Oil Industry money. Yes pollution should be controlled but not by banning Oil but rather using Oil money. Oil money can do a lot of good if the oil owners are encouraged rather than being hated or ridiculed.
