The commentary on Forspoken has been surreal. Take two jokes out of context and judge all the writing by them? That's like judging The Witcher 2 by a looped clip of "My favorite type of magic... Lesbomancy!" followed by King Foltest stating He Is No Duck. Or judging Predator's writing by Hawkins' jokes about his girlfriend's ladyparts. It would be nuts, but that's the double standard we're seeing. Complain that that game tries too hard to make the dialogue hip and current... in a review that is loaded with memes and Spongebob references, because double standard is now the standard. Like you, I hit those lines of dialogue naturally through my playthrough. They worked, they fitted, I laughed with them. If I had to rate them, they'd be... maybe an Antman? Not a Peter Parker (I will talk until I break the universe) or a Starlord (If my junk had a hand on it, I could have flown us out of there). And it's not every ten minutes like those movies are. It's twice, in a game that took 60 hours for me to finish the main quest. There's a determination to hate the game and to hate Frey. I see posts talking about how great it would be if Frey actually killed herself and hallucinated the game, or if she turned out to be the villain so they'd get to kill her. I've seen reviews where they try to crap on the combat by complaining that once you figure out the enemy's move sets and abilities, you can anticipate and defeat them. But that's just describing how games work. That youtuber's commenters were THANKING him for that, as if it were wisdom and not wet farts, because they're determined to hate it. Why? I don't know, I don't claim to be a mind reader. But Forspoken has been very good at separating people who make actual reviews of games, from the people who present a product that will get them the most low-info clicks and likes.

Yo this comment is amazing. Thank you! I couldn't agree more!! It seriously just feels like everyone took a few clips and a few odd moments out of context, and now everyone just hates Frey. What you said about ppl wishing she was "dead" is really disturbing. Like that is such a huge red flag that those ppl are psychotic lol I'm 50 hours into my experience with Forspoken and I find the prospect of sequels and dlc really exciting. The challenges from the Monuments of Wisdom are really cool, and I would love to see some more end game style stuff.

I was extremely lucky to buy and play all of Forspoken (which I greatly enjoyed) BEFORE I started running into videos which were taking some of the game's jokes severely out of context in the most unfair way possible. One comment I found under a video that was attacking the game that bugged the crap out of me was someone comparing the out of context jokes in Forspoken by saying how poor the dialogue is compared to older games like Legacy of Kain. Now, I'm a huge fan Legacy of Kain (it's my favorite Playstation 1 game and one of my all time favorite games), but I do NOT expect Frey from Forspoken to start screaming "Vay Victis, suffering to the conquered". Vay Victis is a LATIN (a dead language) phrase, spoken by an immortal vampire (Kain) with an English accent in an ancient dark ages land called Nosgoth. I'm sorry, but I'm NOT expecting a girl from modern day New York to start screaming Latin phrases like "Vay Victis" and other ancient phrases. That would be dumb, that would be like expecting Spider-man to start screaming out Shakespeare phrases like "Double, double, toil and trouble" in a serious, non-sarcastic way. That would be dumb and Shakespeare doesn't fit Spider-man, just like how Legacy of Kain dialogue doesn't fit Frey. The dialogue in the game Forspoken is, in my opinion, very good and fits all the characters well and several of the jokes are legit funny when put in their proper context. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

I think the main reason people shit on the game so much is highly associated with the elevated price tag. When a game asks you for 70$ for it, you expect to have an overall great experience, but that much is shattered especially due to the environement of the game (which, let's be honest, is very lacking in a desert based world). Gameplay is great, and even if it's the main thing you do in the game, it does NOT reflect the overall experience. If all you take away from the game is the combat, it goes to show that everything else falls short and might not be worth the price.

I do however see how people would be a little upset with the $70 price tag I think this game will get a better audience and maybe even spark some hype about how good the game is when it’s on sale and they have hopefully optimized it.

The idea of creating a whole open world filled with extremely strange mutated creatures and with a few ghost towns filled with skeletons and everything is swallowed by some kind of evil force with only one city one bastion of hope left is absolute BRILLANT. And it is such a breath of fresh air when comparing Forspoken and Elden Ring (but also Death Stranding) to how all other or these boooooooooring repetative open world games are made, filled with endless absolute boring quest-giver NPCs rambling on about their boring daily affairs and why they need these five pounds of reed or wood so urgently you need to bring them, 2000 questmarkers EVERYWHERE with the same boring repetative quest types to do: a) Kill bandit / marauder / grunt / gang nest, or b) collect some random stuff from the wilderness and bring it to someone. And only one type of enemies in all other whole open world games seem to exist: a) Boring bandits b) boring grunts with the same animations and voice-over lines as bandits and c) boring whatever-human-fraction who hates you and are also just reskinned bandits from a technical standpoint. One might think they (developers) have learned and got inspired by The Witcher 3 but unfortunately the exact complete opposite happened. Until finally Death Stranding, Forspoken and Elden Ring came out and revolutionized the open world genre and brought fresh wind. The strangest thing is, Elden Ring who did literally exactly the same as Forspoken (one stong bastion with a few survivors and the player heads out into a strange mysterious and dead open world with monsters zombies and creatures and environmental storytelling) was praised as "the best game ever made". While Forspoken was declared as a game you MUST hate with every single fibre of your being for no reasons whatsoever just because of the mere existence of this game, or you get expelled from the gilde of "true gamers"..... *ggg

Seriously, I liked the game. It's not perfect. The animations at time felt weird, repeated dialogues are bad. But the story is interesting, Frey is a great protagonist and is very realistic. Love the combat it reminded me of a better Infamous combat system, traversing is fun too.

Yeahh it gave me infamous vibes too!! Big agree with the sentiment here. It's far from perfect, but I like the world's lore, the overall story, while lacking superb writing, was still really touching to me. I got some tears at the end of the game fr. It had emotional impact for me. The combat is extremely fun and like, so satisfying to learn the combos and how to counter enemies. I wish the game had been received better.. a sequel would have been awesome.

I saw some gameplay of it. Putting aside the drama about the dialog and story and looking at it purely through a Gameplay experience, this is a game I’d play if someone gave me a copy as a gift, or if it had a heavy discount. The parkour looks fun sure, but I need a pc that can play the damn thing first lmaooo. Does this run on the steam deck? I don’t think so.

I’m only 8 hours in and I’m really enjoying it. I don’t mind that the character is whiny and swears a lot. She seems like an authentic GenZ New Yorker. The gameplay is fun and the mechanics are awesome. I love traversing the world. I wonder if people actually played it. Did the early critics really play it?

I think ppl did play it, at least a bit of it, but I do also think that the bandwagon was way too powerful and ppl didn't really form their own opinions, they just hopped on the bandwagon. Glad ur enjoying it! The writing is awkward in some spots but I agree the MC feels very human and also, the story ended up making me p emotional by the end! It was a good story overall imo.

Essentially this is why I am not a fan of hate bandwagoning when it comes to games. One misses a lot of nuance that makes it look worse than what it is. I saw people hate on Frey as a character. I am wondering does she grows and matures as a character later in the game? Cause I am starting to question whether people dont appreciate character development anymore. Frey does develop quite a bit, but it's definitely nuanced and you might not notice certain things. For instance, early on in the game (not a spoiler really) you come across books in Athia and you can't read them. Cuff says he'll teach you to read their language (the magic must auto translate verbal language, altho it's not explicitly stated). At first, Cuff just tells Frey what the book is about. But later on, she starts reading them herself and even remarks about how she's really getting a hang of it. These things are easy to miss if you're not willing to pay attention

The sheeps hating on this game i've always found very odd. Spider Man one of my favorite games of all time is praised as being the second coming of christ yet everyone who reviewed Spider Man never criticize how incredibly awkward the dialaouge is with new york citizens. They all act like robots, yet you never hear the same of level of complaints. Unfortunately there's another issue "ADULTS" lol. Adults take the fun out of everything and many people are victims of political warfare, so there was a lot of jokes about her being a chocolate lady and the haters calling it "woke" when it's really that Anti social Justice warriors are just as sensitive as Hyper SJW'S. Frey can be cringe at times but that is HER character & are we not going to pretend that Dante from DMC doesn't have cringe moments? I love Dante but he can also be a cringe legend. Yet again you don't hear the same outrage. Unfortunately adults allow politics to intervene in everything they do & it actually brainwashes them into illogical thinking because of their biasness. Does this game have flaws? absolutely but those flaws aren't bad enough to for hiveminds to act like it's the worst game or even one of the worst games ever made. I really hope they make a 2nd one and go even harder & bigger the 2nd time. This game is totally worth $40 bucks or under imo.

this was a great comment to read! I totally agree. There was actually a game that came out like.. super close to Forspoken. Atomic Hearts. I don't hate the game but I watched about an hour of someone playing the beginning. Atomic Hearts HAS SO MUCH CRINGE! the main character is like cringe overload. And yet ppl LOVED that game! I know some ppl even complained about the cringe but then commented that it's like.. part of the "flavor" of the game. LIKE. It just blows my mind that they can't apply that same charity to this game. I think it really does show how people have double standards and just react with their fee-fees. I would love for a second game, for more, but unfortunately the studio was disbanded by the parent company due to the lackluster response to Forspoken. I'm sad af bc I think this IP has a lot of potential. Oh well. Just gonna have to enjoy what we have.

Nice! I'm enjoying the heck out of it. The way the story unfolds makes me think we will be getting some "post game dlc". Basically end game stuff. The first dlc is a prequel story one, not sure if more are planned.. but I hope so. Glad ya enjoyed it, I'm going to put a lot of hours into this. The story just isn’t that great. That’s literally it and the open world could use some work and the enemies could be more diverse. But the gameplay combos and exploration is extremely fun. I’m enjoying it. A part 2 I’m confident would fix majority of these issues since they have a bases to improve on. I would like to see faster combos or at least a better or more interesting attack animation instead of heavy wrist action boom boom pow 😂. Since it’s Square I can see a kingdom hearts 2 type of overhaul next game

@@OriginalTrapstar Sure but so far I've head it takes some time for the combat to open up ,but you are resounded with the bad aspects of the game in the meantime like the bad writing ,some really annoying 3-4 secs to talk to npc ,constant fades to black that just waste a bunch of time and the time it takes to reach the good parts of the combat can turn people off before it's good. I might give it a try at some points since I can get past the bad story if the combat is pretty fun

My recommendation: Go through the entire story first and unlock all the magic trees. You can explore after and there are only a few time sensitive side quests. After the story is done you have all the magic trees open and you can go get new gear, upgrades, etc. The combat is freaking great. You feel like a badass Tanta avatar. I think the game is designed for you to go through the story first, bc exploration and combat really requires full use of the spell set

The demo is so uninspiring, though. On top of that, even in the menu my 3090 was being pushed to 80% Utilization. No thanks. Some of the placement of assets in the world felt like they ran a RNG script to place them.

I recommend running optimized settings, with them my 3080 is doing fine. Also, didn't play the demo but I heard it only had one or two schools of magic available. I just disagree. Feels to me like no one wants to give the game a chance, I agree there are issues but there's a lot to enjoy.

@@FlowCat a limited demo doesnt mean you can't get a taste of what the game offers. I put a lot of hours into demos like Shattered Steel, GTA or Diablo. On top of that - the game is over $100 here. Hard to justify that price when there are better games at much lower price points. I also experienced strange input delay as well which made the movement and combat feel squishy.

it's incredible how actual people who have the english language as their mother tongue can't understand how terrible this game's writing is. That is coming from someone who has english as his 3rd language. This is not a good game. The story is bland and boring when it could have been fantastic. The story was very predictable early on. The NPCs are forgettable. Frey went from a meh character to completely unlikable completely selfish, only wanting to go back to New York, which is baffling because she had nothing there whereas she was worshipped as a hero. The combat is boring and repetitive and while the parkour does help you track across the world it really doesn’t help much with the combat because the camera could not keep up. The games optimization is literally late PS3/base PS4. This was not what they used to not only sell you on the game but also show off what the PS5 could do. Sure there were some areas that were beautiful but not the whole map. Then finally the dialogue. I will admit I got a chuckle out of the meme going around but then it got old, especially when she was cursing every other sentence. So my score for the game is 4.5 out of 10. This was a game that I was anticipating. One of the games along with Final Fantasy XVI that sold me on the PS5. Now this was from the same group that brought us Final Fantasy XV, which was a great game but had its flaws and only got better with the DLC and patches. Forspoken is really a different story. While things like optimization and controls can be fixed in patches, the story can’t. Do not spend $70. Wait until it’s under $30.

Wow, I gotta appreciate that you typed all that out. I disagree with ya on many points. Combat is very exciting and fun imo, maybe if you just spam your normal attack it's boring. Parkour does work in combat, it's extremely fun to use. I think the lore and the story are great. I think the complaints against the story are overblown. There is lore there but the story was very predictable with strong hints going on early in the game but I have respect and don’t spoil things despite how bad the game is. Like I said I have been anticipating this game. I preordered it last year. The thing is normal attack is useless. Also the fact that you are limited to just either range attack in one set of elemental magic to melee to another is what makes the combat boring. You should’ve been able to switch in between within that element instead of switching to another element to melee or range.

Criticism = bandwagoning? Is criticism towards Forspoken not allowed? Gampleay is not good at all, just spam R2 and you won’t every fight. Frey is not a great written character at all, she’s a complete asshole towards innocent people all throughout the game for zero reason, she’s just a mean person and shitty person all around. Frey feeling sad for murdering a Tanta is bad writing, Frey voluntarily murders plenty of animals and people and doesn’t feel an ounce of remorse, yet after she kills Tanta, now she feels sad somehow? Don’t forget the terrible story, graphics and bland open world.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion, and I'm not without criticisms. It seems you're just incapable of nuance. So anyway, the point I was making is that the game is not perfect, but that it is far from as bad as people say. Frey as a character, viewed in snapshots, doesn't always look great. You have to actually care enough to play through the story and see her develop. What I find funny, is that Atomic Hearts is imo a way worse game, and the MC in Atomic Hearts is almost unbearably cringy and poorly written. And yet... did that game get pooped on as hard? No. It didn't. Interesting.

E-celebs? I'm flattered lmao. I just thought it was a pretty good game. Of course, for all time it will be known as a terrible game due to the response and the memefication of it. The fact of the matter is that many people, you probably included, are just obsessed with the hyperbolic hype train.
