C.C. “Kit” Bland was my great great uncle. I’ve heard the story of his heroism my whole life, but Chris tells it best.

The largest and most significant fortification guarding the primary port remaining to the Confederacy was undermanned and poorly led. Without doubt it was conquered by the largest combined amphibious attack of the Union during the war. Apparently, the Union recognized its importance far more than the Confederacy did.

Visited the museum at this site in January 2021 - excellent displays & enthusiastic docent. Also some WWII displays at the museum.

Why not work to restore the fort? The Beaches are restored. It seems like that would be possible here and at Yorktown. After it is completed than set up protection of the fort/battlefield from being washed away again. Is it too far down the list? I couldn't imagine that Yorktown would be too low.

Beach is not restored. The ocean covers the location of the Northeast Bastion and most of the sea face. It would cost $50,000,000 to hold back the sea and reconstruct the Northeast Bastion, sea face, and Mound Battery. That works out to about $250,000 per stakeholder. Thank you for your donation.

Chris makes reference to a visit to the Sugar Loaf lines "later today". Any tape of that? Beautiful fortifications.

Anytime Bragg shows up, the Confederates know that the clock is ticking. He lucked up at Chickamauga but couldn't or wouldn't press his advantage and we all know what happens. Johnston and Bragg are the 2 biggest waste 🙄.

Johnston was a good defensive general at least. Bragg caused my GGpa to be captured at Ft. Fisher in this battle…because he held Hoke back from attacking…

Braxton Bragg was one of the best generals "for" the union army too bad the confederacy didn't realize this sooner but at least he has an army base named after him.

@@killertaco8themaster773 I have to explain this? What would have been the result had there been more Confederates there? Seems like higher casualties is the obvious answer.

You forgot about the magazine explosion on 16 January 1865, a military sabotage operation carried out by a captain in the Confederate Secret Service. The chemically-activated fuze was supposed to detonate the powder reserve on the 15th, but due to a malfunction detonated the following day. We may therefore conclude that the magazine explosion was in fact part of the battle of Fort Fisher, and not "an unfortunate accident by drunken Union navy seamen carrying torches while searching the bombproofs for souvenirs".
