I lived there for 7 years, I left in in 2017. I would drive to Bowditch early every morning to walk & watch the dolphins. It was so lush & beautiful. Hard to see all the destruction! It was a magical place for me..... I miss it very much!

I grew up in Fort Myers and spent a lot of time on Fort Myers Beach. I haven't been back in many years because it was being ruined with too much development and I couldn't stand to look at it. I didn't recognize a thing in this video. I was surprised to see so many buildings still standing. I thought Ian took them all.

Nine years ago I left South Florida after 33 years. I'm in South America now so had only a vague memory of there being a big blow on the Gulf Coast. So as I started watching this video I got that sinking, sad feeling as the truth dawned on me. My sister lived in Naples so I was over there a lot and was used to such incredible, lush Gulf Coast beauty with the stunning sunsets. So sorry.

The ignorance in that statement is astounding and just sad that people being oppressed is some sort of joke. There is a major difference in what is happening in Ukraine and what is happening to coastal Florida due to climate change. Not to say I don't get the sentiment of massive government spending towards undeserving expenditures. But maybe instead of going after all the human suffering in Ukraine ask why trillions went to the stock market and bonds during the pandemic or why in 2018 we gave trillion dollar tax breaks to 1%.

My last trip to Fort Myers Beach was in 2015. For years, my folks rented a condo for a month or more near the south end. Lots of blue tarps on the roof over their unit. They stayed in the condo. I stayed beach side in an RV at the Red Coconut. I can't even spot it now or if I think I can I'm just not sure. Tons of progress over the past nine months. Still, tons more to go. So tragic how devastating this hurricane was.
@ajarnett5814

The owners of the Red Coconut bought the property in 1984 for $750K. After Ian rolled through and destroyed the site, the family sold it to developers for $54MM.

Am I seeing the Santini Plaza at 4:25? There are no cars in the parking lot. Honestly, this still sickens me. This island was so vibrant, so alive for as long as I can remember. I have spent so much time here and so much is gone. I couldn't find the Outrigger. And does anyone know if Chralie Browns Steakhouse and/or the Getaway Marina survived?

Insurance payments and building regulations have a lot to do with it. In many cases the insurance payouts do not cover the cost to rebuild at upgraded code requirements and elevations. We know 2 families on the island who are now the proud owners of vacant lots, and not enough money to rebuild. It looks as if they will be selling and moving away from their dream home location.

im seeing no movement at all on the sandpiper; no attempt to cover the roof to prevent further water damage, would leave one to suspect they will knock it down and rebuild new, or just sell property; see no cars in the taller condo structure either......

I’m a local…it’s amazing how many buildings/businesses that haven’t even removed drywall yet, let alone started/finished any other work…a lot of reasons behind all of this. Some blame insurance, some are unsure wether not to sell or stay…ALOT of people On FMB didn’t have flood insurance so alot of them are having to come out of pocket which is just flat out not possible. Very sad
