This particular video got me close in my heart. The destruction is unbelievable and there are indeed no words to describe it. "I lost everything in Hurricane Andrew."... after that, it becomes a never-ending continuum of thoughts and images. I hadn't had a drink for 12 years, but after Hurricane Andrew, I found myself consuming half a tall glass of vodka so I could sleep for a few hours at night...daylight visuals of my neighborhood had turned into a 30 Mi dumpster surrounding me. There was no peace. No recovery seemed feasible. Time stops for no one except when your world is upside down.

Building codes were changed after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Unfortunately, there are many homes and buildings that are older and not up to current codes. Plus, with large tornadoes, even the best built homes will sometimes be destroyed.

Here we go again, and again, and again. 🙄 The stuff you internet idealists suggest we do to homes to protect people from storms would make it cost prohibitive for them to live in any shelter every day. Americans face far greater risk to their lives driving on their roads than they ever will from tornadoes, hurricanes and flash floods combined.

If our housing standards were better, the people who live in these types of homes couldn't afford live in them the 99.99% of the time a tornado or hurricane isn't bearing down on them.
