Yup, it was easy enough to mea culpa the accident. He stopped and made sure the kid was okay. Should have written up an incident report.... but all of that is minor compared to lying during the investigation. As an officer, once you've been caught in a lie you're useless in any future court case. In a world where officer's are taken at their word when testifying, that's all you've got.

Certainly, lying while on duty should be an HR thing in an instance like this. Cops refuse to take responsibility because they are narcissists and they are encouraged to get away with their crimes. I've seen too many videos that prove all of this. They only take responsibility when there is damning evidence.

Especially if the kid's none the worse for the wear. If the bike was damaged, put it, and the shook-up kid in the car, take him home, apologize, and promise to fix/replace the damaged bike. That would have been some fantastic PR for their dept. as a whole, too. But, who am I to say...

What is there to investigate? He lied repeatedly about being involved in the incident, until he realized he was on camera in close enough proximity that he couldn’t lie anymore. That should be immediate termination for a cop, not administrative leave, or whatever. His word now has zero value in court, and he can be used to discredit any case he’s involved in.

It was not a "crash site" ... That said, the problem isn't that it happened, but that the officer LIED about it and didn't follow protocol. He should be fired for that alone.

Yes, and if it was a genuine accident (and he commited no traffic infringement to cause it) he would have been exonerated. So either he caused it and tried to flee the consequences, or he is an extremely sloppy and incompetent cop.

These are the types of sociopaths being hired by law enforcement today. It seems this is a requirement of law enforcement personnel. His actions to lie about this incident until faced with the undeniable evidence, is more criminal than any other normal citizen breaking the law. This is just another example why the public has little to no trust in law enforcement and sets the relationship back years with this one example. In the end, it will all be forgotten once it blows over.

From the description of the incident, it sounds like it probably would have been treated as a lapse in judgement by his superiors. Lying about it gets it on the news, draws doubt on his integrity etc etc...

On leave? He should already have been fired and charged. If a citizen had bump a kids bike and knocked him over and only checked if the kid said he was ok before driving away, he'd have already been charged and possibly fired if it was bringing negative publicity to his employer.

This happened to my dad in the 70s. He was hit by a cop while riding his back and it broke his leg. The cop just asked if he was ok and took off after he said yeah. The cop never once got out of the car and checked on him.

Being intimidating, don’t be afraid. Stand your ground, it will finally catch up to them and justice WILL be served. Thank god the child was okay.

For anyone that wants to know Administrative Leave means that he's not a police officer (as of right now) but he still gets payed & keeps his benefits and insurances. All he has to do is just lay low and stay home for a bit and he'll be back in that patrol car in ab 2wks

The union is most likely the reason he's still employed. Would you prefer the PD violate the union contract and then get sued by the officer and your tax dollars go towards the settlement? By no means am I defending the PD; I'm just saying that the police unions often have management's hands tied, even in egregious situations like this.

When I was 10 years old the first female police officer in our town on her first day on the job hit me with her patrol car and I was pronounced dead at the scene. I suffered brain trauma and was in a coma. They lied about that too
