Fort Sumner today looks like just another dusty stop along US Route 60 in New Mexico, but the complexity of its history likely rivals that of many large cities in the country. Fort Sumner is a place of devious cattle kings, notorious outlaws and desperados, as well as the site of the unfortunate collision of civilizations. We came to Fort Sumner New Mexico looking for the outlaw Billy the Kid, but found quite a bit more. #travel

I was there in 1999. The town was empty. There was one scruffy guy behind the counter at the museum with not much to say. It was a very unique experience, alone in Billy's old town. Silent, desolate and maybe a bit lonely. But really brought me back to the time. Thanks for sharing your travels and narrative. Safe trip dear.
