I remember reading these when I was younger, were they intended for a younger audience? Would I get satisfaction from reading them 20 years later?
@ftloc
@ftloc 7 жыл бұрын
Adam Walker my answer would be an unqualified yes! The story is complex and the art is superb. Some of the later stories may be too dark or violent for very young children, in fact. In my opinion, Bone , in spite of being an ‘all ages,’ story can teach a lot of ‘mature’ comics about character-based storytelling that is still ‘epic’ and twisting.

Jeff Smith said that he never intended it for younger audiences but kids really liked them, which is why when Schoolastic asked him to remove Smiley Bone's cigars he didn't.

This is nuts. I'm 23 years old and I grew up reading the scholastic graphic novels, I still have all the nine volumes including the prequel Rose. I had NO IDEA that Bone was originally being published as short black and white issues several years before I was even born. Bone is excellent, I love these books to death, and I still read them from time to time when I can.

Although I was older than you, I too discovered Bone only when Scholastic published the coloured editions, so I was just as thrilled to find the original black and white issues (and the one-volume edition, which I talk about in another video). I've grown to really adore the black and white artwork (and the larger comics-size) since then!

The ultimate cartoonist's cartoonist. His storytelling art is both simple and complex, he reminds me of a less esoteric or American Moebius. And your explanations and printing knowledge is excellent, as always.

I've never thought of Smith as Moebius before but it does make a strange kind of sense somehow! 😁

Indeed, it’s one of the most evergreen reads there is! A major reason is the slow evolution of the kind of story it is, with each chapter serving up more new tones and moods while furthering the plot.

The colour editions are lovely, but the black and white has this power/ energy that I really love! Check out my video comparing the first chapter in both colour and black and white if you're interested! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYrVdJ2pqMp2ZrM

Thank you for this! I am currently going through my 1-55 issues and I was wondering when the flip to Image Comics occurred. I am assuming Cartoon Books still published 21-27 concurrently with Image? As I have CB version of those issues as well?
@ftloc
@ftloc 7 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! I believe after the agreement with Image ended, Jeff Smith and CB reprinted 21-27 while picking up from 28, similar to the way Image had reprinted 1-20 when they started with 21. BUT I cannot now find any sources to confirm that, so it may well be that CB was publishing them parallel to Image, although I wonder if that wouldn't somehow defeat the purpose of tying up with Image for publishing (not just distribution) in the first place? Let me dig further! 😁

@@ftloc Thanks for the reply! I went back and looked at my Image #22 and Cartoon Book #22. My Image #22 was printed in 1996 but my CB #22 was printed in Oct 1997, around the same time my CB #28 was printed in Aug 1997. So your initial theory is correct in that CB retroactively went back and published #21-27!

i remember reading this in 5th grade. my aunt worked at a borders warehouse where once a year they had a sale to workers and there families on "damaged goods" where everything was 1$. needless to say i got the entire one volume edition for 1$ because there was a tag on the book that was supposed to be removed from the printing factory. i cut it off with a pair of scissors and bam. $40+ book for $1.

Is there a book collecting all the single issues covers? They're not printed in collected editions.
@ftloc
@ftloc 22 күн бұрын
It's a great question; the covers are always fun, and can be outright fantastic! Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a covers volume of Bone the way many other series have. And yes, none of the editions I have come across - colour, B&W and one volume - collect the covers, as far as I can remember, either. The closest thing I have found is a set of postcards that seem to be textless versions of some of the covers! 😁

My first exposure to Bone was the old video game from Telltale. Apparently they abandoned the Bone IP because Sam & Max turned out to be more profitable. But, curiously, these days it's much easier to obtain the Bone comics than the S&M comics. The S&M comics have been out-of-print for over a decade now. They didn't even re-print them for the video game re-release. Weird.
@ftloc
@ftloc 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, I did not know Sam and Max was originally a comic! Thanks for this and I have been reading up on it now 😁 Apparently there were some collections and reprints timed with the release and re-release of games , but they sold out and are very hard to find now? Seems ripe for an omnibus or complete collection!

How do the dimensions of the Complete Collection compare to the dimensions of the original issues or the Cartoon Books volumes?
@ftloc
@ftloc 4 жыл бұрын
The One Volume is slightly smaller - the original Cartoon Books Volumes are comics-sized, whereas the One Volume Edition is the size of the Scholastic collected editions, in spite of it being Cartoon Books too! Now you've made me want to go and double-check! I'll report back here if I'm wrong! 😁

Alas, there's no crossover with Usagi that I've ever seen, but the Bone cousins do visit Castle Waiting once! That's not in these issues though, it's a backup in one of the CW issues.

Honestly, me neither, nothing wrong at all. I have perhaps a small bone to pick with the very very end and the decision made by the cousins, especially Fone Bone (I agree with some who say it doesn't fit), but it is so small and tiny a part of the whole saga that it is almost not worth counting as a negative in such a towering achievement. I hope you enjoyed the video!
