I mean sort of. He gave lots and lots of backstory that you could read if you wanted to (and a lot of us did.) But you could also enjoy Lord of the Rings just fine without ever touching the Silmarillion. Lord of the Rings didn't depend on the Silmarillion. The Dark Crystal depends on supplemental material to give context to it's weirdness.

Okay, so I've watched the movie now, and I think I understand why the crystal likes music. The crystal is the thing that joins the two creatures at the end, and it's shown that the "good guys" have a special call where they all harmonize with each other. When Jen blew the flute, it made a tone very similar to that call, and it makes the crystal glow because it recognizes it.

My guess with the crystal glowing is that his flute plays at the perfect frequency of the dark crystal and in real life that would make the crystal vibrate and possibly break with enough volume but instead it glows because of magic.

I’m pretty sure the emperor skeksis died because the mystic was dying, and he couldn’t fix it. They use the crystal for life, but it probably doesn’t work, because the mystics are still dying, so they’re just making themselves look young.

Probably, but I think another reason they were both dying is because the emperor, SkekSo, experimented with the Darkening and let it destroy his body. But I think you’re right that his Mystic counterpart, UrSu, was just dying naturally, and that’s also probably why SkekSo died.
