@@dirkmohrmann8960 If you pay the "outright" price (which is about as much as the other airbags cost), then it does not need to check in again. You may WANT to have it check in because it downloads algorithm updates to improve safety, but you don't have to. The subscription is just a method of getting an airbag with a much lower initial investment, in exchange for paying a little bit as you go.

Like really, we want to think less about our gear. I am okay buying ultra durable Kevlar jeans, I need pants Im okay spending 120$ on the ScorpionEXO, I need a jacket. Gloves? sure why not. boots? well I need them for work anyway Helmet? This is the cost of riding Airbag? dude how much do you want me to wear? in a jacket? I still need to look good on my date. on a backpack though, it gives me an excuse to have a backpack when I go to work. and because its something I use every day, I can justify a higher price.

Brilliant episode, as usual. I’m taking my live into my own hands by only wearing a summer or winter riding suit, with insertable armor at the knees, shoulders, and elbows. I’ve been down a couple of times. First one was when I was hit by an inattentive driver cutting across two lanes of traffic to make his exit from the freeway. He pegged me on the front tire, sending me sliding down the freeway with the bike doing likewise. I was scraped up, but basically O.K. Second mishap was my own fault for trying to jump a curb at low speed, at an angle. The bike and I went down hard to the right, pretty much destroying my right shoulder as it hit the pavement with 450lbs of motorcycle pushing me down. Six months off work for rotator cuff surgery & recuperation. I’m a daily freeway rider, and watch everything and everyone with a vengeance.

I want to note that yes, hips may not be connected to FATAL crashes, but we also wear wear gloves, no? Yet I don't see hands being specified to being a cause of death. So don't see the pants as a anti-death safety, but perhaps a anti-permanent leg injury that makes you never ride a bike again safety. Safety gear is more than death prevention, it's for injury prevention as well.

@@docford3635 I just want to share my experience. I race motorcycles on track. I spent 900 on the Helite GP with some extra tethers and cartridges. After my first crash with the airbag I was amazed at how much less it hurt than my previous crashes. It was worth every penny. I'll be getting one of these backpacks for the street.

I am a trauma physician and motorcyclist. Wearing airbag protection is something I always practice. Torso protection is more important than lower extremities. Crash absorbing materials decrease impacts. Heart, liver, spleen, are examples of tethered water balloons that bounce around and twist with impacts. Extremities are essentially bones and muscles which tolerate impacts with less issues vs chest.

I've worked in shock/trauma as well. Now in an ER. I wholeheartedly agree that torso protection is more important, however in my experience, lower extremities need some love too. I know too many people (myself included) who have severely injured lower limbs on a bike and have it drastically affect quality of life. From purely a clinician standpoint, yes you're less likely to die from a leg injury. But a shattered femur or tibial condyle is going to make life less than fun.

Ever hear anything about pelvic protection? I feel like it’s not talked about enough because it’s so hard of a body part to protect, but the reality is a pelvic fracture (from impacting the gas tank, or ground in a crash) is a relatively common and deadly cause of motorcycle fatalities. Because there’s so much important vessels in there. Or at least that’s what I’ve read, I’m not a doctor. I’d be interested to hear your input.

Honesty is honesty. Calling out garbage, ESPECIALLY expensive garbage, is the right thing to do. The backpack makes perfect sense, and someone like myself with a bad back that still wants to ride would do well with the jeans too. And the tether is, in my opinion, the better way to go. No battery, no "subscription" and fancy garbage. Oh darn, have to get used to removing a tether.... make it part of a routine. Awesome work.

Getting used to removing the tether is not a problem. Remembering to put it on is a problem! This said, I also have an electronic one (Dainese D-Air) and it is active whenever it sense the motorcycle vibration. So it will protect at any speed and when stopped. But the idiots did not make it in dayglow color (except for the inner lining, which is invisible when worn) to avoid a collision in the first place. I use the tethered Turtle 95% of the time. I'll use the electronic for the city, stop-and-go-with-some-texting sort of situations and for a passenger.

Great video, Ryan and team. I have two Helite Turtle 1's (the original tethered version). One for me and one for little pillion. Living in the back of beyond (Mongolia), it's hard to get service or spare parts. Airlines don't want to fly pressurized gas containers. I only got one each, no spares allowed by the shipper from the UK to Mongolia. So I get my replacement canisters overland from China. I pay $3 per canister in a quantity of 10. The nice thing about the CO2 canisters is they are a commodity product. Not proprietary. Almost all the airbag manufacturers use polyurethane for the bladder. It's also a commodity and replaceable with some DIY skills. I think only Dainese and Alpinestars use the type with filaments and I don't think they last any longer than PU bladders.

Martin, check the $3 canister is compatible for a Helite vest? Don't want to have an off & it either not work or no pressure inside. Also Helite UK are not the distributor for Mongolia. Try Helite HQ in France for a local (ish) dealer!

I bought about 20 generic canisters and did several test inflations while recording with slow motion video. The inflation timings were exactly the same as with branded Helite canisters. I weighed the generic canisters before and after to check for CO2 contents. It’s within spec. I also cut open the canisters to check for construction. Same as Helite. My conclusion is Helite buys the canisters from the same manufacturers and sticks a label on and charges 10x the cost. No problem with that. It’s just business but I can do it too. I made several KZbin videos on airbag tests including the generic CO2 canister tests.

In&Motion (Klim/ixon) subscription IS OPTIONAL. You can either pay full price (800$) and have it for life. OR buy the airbag halfprice (350$) and subscribe for a small amount (12$/month) that Can be stoped during whenever you want for any period of Time (eg wintertime when you dont ride). It actually bring the cost of airbag down for people that have less Money to spend, or ride not much during the year but want an airbag anyway. People freak out with the subscribtion but you should inform yourself on how it actually is before. It is really clever, it is the only company that gives the consumer a choice, and people get mad. Stop misinformation about this product please.

Got the h-MOOv two months ago, and while I haven't deployed it, I've been loving it. Being that I already wore a backpack on most rides the only change to my gear was wearing one on all rides. As Ryan says, it is super nice to be able to neglect some of your gear but if you bring the backpack, you still have the vital neck and spine protection provided by the backpack. I went for the tethered version primarily due to the spare cannisters being about 1/3 the price, and that I can simply quickly unplug the tether and do some stupid supermoto thing where I don't want it deploying at low speeds, and then plug it back in.

If you ever deploy it for testing. Id really like to know how it effects whats in the bag. Will it break a phone screen if the bag is stuffed full. Is the engagement violent enough to destroy whats in the bag. Granted w/e is in the bag prob gets destroyed when you the ground without it.

@@matthewbeaver5026 I don't think it would really be possible for the bag to break anything that is in it. The airbag is underneath the storage, and the backpack has expansion space for the airbag, so the storage compartment is simply pushed out on top of the inflated airbag. I'll let you know if I do end up deploying it one way or another in any case!

I've stepped off the bike countless times but with the stretch in the tether and the 60lb deployment threshold I've never had an issue. I've even done a pivot turn and dropped the bike and it didn't deploy because I managed to stay close to the tether.

I wore my Turtle 2 in 105°heat coming back from Colorado. With a cooling vest underneath and staying hydrated, the extra bulk was ok. There was weight but when you're on your bike you never notice it. I was still doing 10 hr days. 👍👍5🏍🙋‍♂️

@@mortanes2 Hi , in this case old tech is what it is "old tech" and also "less good", but I admit way better then no airbag. I own an IXON airbagvest with the in@motion tech ( identical on the KLIM airbag) since 2019. So I am well informed as an early customer. I have seen it being updated from 70% to over 95% coverage in all types of incidents....FOR FREE, unlike Ryan claims ( pure misinformation in this video). Each update is done automatically, without any intervention from myself needed and always with a clear explanation to the owner or leaser about what has been changed. Very professional. Together with the alpinestars system , In@motion is by far the most advanced system available and more importantly, a system capable of upgrading its performance even after the purchase, again without extra cost for the buyer. About Buying or leasecontract....You decide, so people have to stop wining about that subscription model. You don't like that , just buy it , you have a choice , unlike all other brands. ANother misinformation from Ryan. PRICE : It is expensive BUT, if you buy it, it is in the same pricerange as an HELITE E-turtle system, an alpinestars tech air 5 or a dainese d-air. You can not compare the price with any tethered system. These are in another league technological. What would you say if a cars airbag was still controlled by a string on the front or rear bumper???? It is simply a fact that tethered airbags do not cover nearly most of the situations . Apart from not being separated from the bike, there are also a lot of situations that the tethered airbag will deploy to late to be usefull. That is especially the case in direct collisions. Ryan says that electronic airbags are more suited for the racetrack and not needed for street riding. Infact , the opposite is the truth. It is also not true ( anymore) that the in&motion electronic airbags will not deploy at a standstill, when you are hit by a car. ( another misinformation) They will. Tethered airbags on the other hand.....not so. I will end by saying that I am very well informed on the technical things regarding airbagtechnology and I have no links to any manufacturer ( other then owning one of the currently most advanced systems and testing different others). In this video I found at least 5 misinformations, leading people towards the wrong way in this. HELITE has the merit of bringing airbag technology towards a bigger public. They have good products, but they are behind in the evolution towards electronic airbags, so they keep on selling their old tech next to their e-turtle. I recently asked them how their HELITE e-turtle can be updated ( better algorythmes) after purchase. The answer : please contact your dealer to look if an update is needed....in other words, they just don't update unlike In&Motion or Alpinestars... So if Ryan would be honnest or well informed, he would take that KLIM out of the dustbin and understand the integrated In&motion system ( also used in IXON,RST,HELD,Furygan.....gear) is very well engineered and a system designed to become better every year with every free update with all data collected of each mile done and each incident that happened shared by it's users every day (today 176.9 millions km) This is called , the power of mass data. My 5 year old airbagvest is still up to date and has the same algorythmes (with much more coverage then in 2019 when I bought it) as the 2024 airbag and it did not cost me a penny for the updates al those years.

Helite electronic versions can be paired with the optional fork sensor. That one doesn’t require GPS and works from standstill. It detects crashes based on shocks. Theoretically if you’re in a tunnel without a GPS signal and do a smooth lowside without any real shock it might not go off, but chances of that are very low. If you’re hit from behind while waiting at a traffic light, it’s probably more effective than the mechanical version, since you don’t actually have to fall of the bike.

I personally still dig algorithm airbags, but can’t go wrong with the old trust rusty tethered systems. Either way, well shot. After taking an 18 year vacation from street riding I decided to purchase a new Bike this week. Saw this video and watched several others and decided to get the Helite backpack for many of the reasons you stated in this video. When I was 20 yeas old a car made a left turn into me while I was on my motorcycle and while I didn’t sustain major injuries I still have some knee pain from that 26 years later. Nothings 100% safe when doing dangerous activities, so you have to do the best to mitigate the danger and that’s what these do. @FortNine The only thing I’d add to that is that Helite make an electronic turtle airbag that has a fork sensor so it can detect additional crash scenarios such as being rear ended while stationary. Something that the tethered version can’t cover and it doesn’t require a subscription or additional purchase of the “brain”. Same benefits as the tethered version without the tether plus being able to detect additional crash scenarios makes it another choice to consider, the only downside being that you have to remember to charge it.

I bought the Helite in black mostly due to your review. Yeah I can feel I’m wearing it but it’s literally a life saver. The amount of review of people talking about their crash with one and how lack of injury was attributed to them was amazing to read. Tether length is a funny thing did a lot of research and trail for that. And in the summer it’s a bit warm but found the Revit sand 4 works best as the veneration works around the Helite, so now I don’t sweat.. Thanks again

I would bet it would not have helped. I am guessing you hit the tank breaking it before that ripcord would have pulled tight. Thats the normal cause of a pelvis break in a motorcycle crash anyway.

I have an Alpinestar techair airbag jacket, purchased about 4 years ago. It only activates when the jacket is zipped and a Velcro closure closed so no chance of activation when thrown to the ground, but it did activate in a slow speed fall while out on a gravel road, clearly it recognised that being horizontal and travelling downwards was not a normal riding state.

Only downside is that you have to send it to alpine for a check after a crash but its actually a good thing imo for safety and that little extra cash you pay then is nothing in exchange for not having broken ribs or worse

I have the IXON airbag since 2019 with in&motion tech. All updates come over WIFI for free. With the In&Motion system I can change the canister myself. There is also a procedure to check the airbag yourself after a deployement

@@iallso1 I also heard that Alpine has the Tech Air Offroad. Despite this vest being marketed towards offroad use, you can put it in street mode and use it like any other vest. The big benefits of this vest is that it is user reloadable and can be deployed up to 4 times before needing to be sent in. Additionally it seems to have a bigger protection area on the body and especially the neck area compared to other Alpine Air Tech models. But in general, Alpine is the best in my opinion, as they have the best electronic airbags hands down whilst protecting the shoulders.

I own a In&Motion Airbag suit and I have a couple of things I would like to add to Ryan's observations. 1) The entry cost is much lower than a regular airbag without subscription. I got my suit at a much, much lower price than any other airbag suit around. All I had to do is pay 12 euros for the monthly subscription and I was ready to go for the next trackday. If you're strapped for cash this is still the fastest way to get protection. 2) You can use a single subscription on multiple jackets, suits or vests. On top of my RST track suit I now own a Furygan Airbag Vest as well that I use for commuting and offroading, both on the same subscription. 3) I can vouch for the system as it has saved my bacon twice already. Once on a highside on track and again on a offroad crash on my dirtbike. On both occasions I was able to purchase the replaceable cartridges at a discount. Instalation is super easy and there is a method for testing for yourself the integrity of the system after the crash. 4) If you're not happy with the product you can cancel the monthly subscription at anytime. All this being said I understand the frustration of having to pay a monthly or yearly subscription which on the long run is going to cost you about as much as an airbag system without subscription. I just wanted to show that if you cannot afford a "regular" airbag system this is a cheaper (initially) option and then you can pay as you go while already being protected.

Ditto on that. Let's revisit Ryan's costs for an A1 Rally (in USD): $470 for vest and hardware. $400 for activation purchase = $800, about the same as the Helite Turtle 2. Want a lower initial cost? Subscription option on same setup: $470+$12/month to subscribe. $470+$432 at the end of 3-year subscription, then you have option of staying with monthly or buy it for $100. Total at end of 3 years with purchase = $1,000. Klim's costs over the long run are higher, typical of Klim's stuff.

I just want to say this on one of your motorcycling videos! Please keep the MTB content coming. People seem to talk down to anything that isn't powered by internal combustion on this channel but I think that expanding to other topics that people can find common ground on is a great idea and should be expanded upon. Mountain biking is great and often more accessible to people than motorcycling or dirt-biking. In my state, a lot more trails and parks are designed for mountain bikes rather than dirt bikes, so getting that audience involved and advocating for that activity is nothing to be ignored.

I bought a tethered Turtle last year after window-shopping them for a while, but Ryan's video pushed me over the edge. I got rear-ended at the end of the season (was sitting at a red light) and it cushioned my landing so well I didn't even have bruises (I was also wearing a full armored leather jacket, armored Trilobite jeans, boots, gloves, and helmet). I was very happy to have it, and re-setting it with a new CO2 cartridge was straightforward.

I ride with a Hit-Air vest. I bought it at the height of the pandemic when there were zero hospital beds so falling off meant competing with the dying for the attention of healthcare pros. I got to try it out the other day when I dropped my bike at slow speed turning a corner up a hill. The bike stalled and down I went since it was cold outside and I hadn't warmed it up. The vest went off as I was separated from the bike. I may have been injured but I wasn't. Not a scratch. The Hit-Air is just like the Helite but only cost $500. They sell mostly to horseback riders. I also broke both femurs 48 years ago in a motorcycle wreck and have pins in both legs and hips thanks to a 1976 genius surgeon. I still don't even limp. These pants would have probably saved my legs so there is more to consider than whether you die or not with leg injuries. I may have to look into these since I am not willing to park my bikes yet.

Great video, but I think you're a little harsh on electronic systems. In&motion, AlpineStars & Dainese use the same tech as onboard ABS & TC systems of modern bikes - the 5/6-axis IMU. It's very well-proven, and there's a vast database of road use. Every time I put my vest on charge, it connects to In&motion - uploads all my dynamic data, downloads the latest crash detection algorithms. Nothing wrong with a simple rope tether, and best wishes to anyone who chooses that option, but electronic systems fire sooner and inflate faster - before you're off the bike and flying through the air. The extra cost & complexity brings extra benefit.

I think he likes the system, he's grudge was with the subscription model.

I own 3 airbags; an RST adventure integrated jacket, a Klim vest, and a Helite mechanical vest. I’ll now be checking over the air bladders of the Klim and RST products for sure! I also didn’t know that Helite had their electronic models available in the US now and will check those out for sure. I will say that I highly prefer either integrated airbags or ones that can go under a jacket reasonably. I commute daily and have been wearing an airbag over the last 2 years and 20,000 miles and am a huge advocate of them! I love the idea of airbag pants but, for commuting, I really wish I there was an overpant option so I could wear it over my office clothes.

I have a Dainese vest which is optimised for street use and can detect stationary shunts. You register with the company to activate it but no subscription. They also update the algorythm with data the vests collect via the updates. Pretty pleased with it so far. Riding a scooter it is hard to find a safe tether point which is why I sold my Helite. Also other riders don't tease me any more!

I have the Ixon which is effectively the same as the Klim. I bought the track algorithm instead of the off road one. It was £25 per year which is pretty different to $10 a month. Subscriptions work if you are a summer only rider ir maybe only do track days during a couple of days per month. I wear mine all the time ... which is different to friends who bought Helite. Since the Helite is external it has to be covered in abrasion resistant material. This makes it heavy and another thick layer meaning its hot and bulky. The result is my friends are reluctant to wear it every ride. An airbag in a waredrobe isnt very effective. We all have opinions on these products. Id recommend people to do their homework in this area rather than just accepting the opinion expressed in one youtube video.
