Finding neutral on a Kawasaki is easier than any other motorcycle brand. Specially designed ball bearings in the transmission are the secret. Watch on to learn.

There's one thing about this company, modifying German aviation engines to meet their specifications for tropical weather. The specimen in question is the ki-45 Hien fighter aircraft, nowadays I didn't know that Kawasaki incorporated a way to make shifting to neutral much better and yes I've tried a suzuki shift lever, questionable.

It seems to me that if EVERY other bike manufacturer DOESN'T add this feature... probably because the annoyances of when it doesn't work as it should outweigh the small benefit, then Kawasaki has tried to use this feature to help sell its bikes inlieu of more useable features such as automatic indicator cancelling. Thanks Honda! 👌

I was a motorcycle salesman part time in 1982 or 83 .. actually sold motorcycles part-time for 17 years January through May I sold a new Kawasaki to a customer. About a week later the following Saturday, I saw that customer strolling around the showroom. I said to him, are you going to move up to a bigger bike already? He said no I’m having problems with my transmission. I said, what is it doing. I was curious because previously I had been a motorcycle mechanic with three different dealerships over the years .. He told me the motorcycle was not shifting correctly. I asked him to explain. And what he explained was-/ he was not able to shift up and to second while he was stopped. I explained to him, about the positive neutral feature.. I told him it is explained in his owners manual if he had read it. Being part time, I was not the person that actually delivered the bike to him because I was at my regular job when he showed up for his new motorcycle… otherwise, I would have scheduled him to come in while I was there, if possible so I could explain the basics about that exact bike.. so I asked him where his bike was now, he can just go home because there’s no need to look into it any further.. he told me that the mechanic in the service department was working on it right now.. so we went back to the service department. Mechanic already had the motor out of the frame, and the engine case split... then I had to explain how the transmissions on kawasaki’s work to the mechanic…

Some people are crazy. Why the F would you want to select second gear, standing still? Snow, maybe, but most hate snow. And that mechanic should have known. I'm not a Kawa bike owner, but it works for dorks who can't even feel neutral, or dorks who do not adjust the clutch cable. Maybe those oiled clutches and cold oil make finding neutral hard, but that should disappear when the engine gets warm. NEVER had neutral problems, no matter what bike. You simply need to feel what you do. Duh! Stupid bikers are the pain in the ass, not the bikes. Gee. So weird, this. Besides, only my T500 needed neutral, or twostroke oil pump would not work, on other bikes you pull the clutch, and you FORGET neurtral. At a stoplight, you never switch to neutral, you just don't, bad habit, right?

Reminds me of my Yamaha DT50MX, a 50cc moped. Because of the laws in the Netherlands beings stricter than in many other countries, Yamaha designed the bike with 5 gears, then simply left out first gear for the Dutch market and changed the chain gear ratio. This resulted in the regular 1-N-2-3-4-5 gearbox now being a N-1-2-3-4 gearbox, making my life easier and confusing every cop wanting to put it on a dyno :)

That is funny. On my Yamaha RD 250, the 5th gear is blocked in comination with a different chain gear ratio due to the noise regulations at the time. My old Kawasaki shift pattern is actually N-1-2-3-4-5 from factory. When the mot guy wanted to drive it the first time, he was a bit confused.

@@savage22bolt32 it's because Europe actually has laws and requirements around licenses and don't just give them to anyone who buys a happy meal att mcdonalds. so we have restrictions on how big of a bike you can ride. mopeds are 15+ but can't go over 45km/H and be over a certain power figure. but kids love to tune them and go faster so that's why they dyno them. same goes for A1 license (125cc max) and a2 license (mid size bike max 35kw power) and then full license is A which is just any size. moped att 15, 125cc att 16 and A2 att 18 and A att 24 or 20 if you have had A2 license for 2years. so they don't really dyno much shit just the small bikes to make sure they are compliant.

Probably a marginal weight increase, extra moving parts to take up precious engine space and extra $$ to maintain and manufacture. It is the only thing I like about Kawasaki transmissions. I had a 1992 ZXR250 and I found it clunky in that department. Hard to change gears(sometimes my boot would miss). Sometimes it would get stuck between gears. Particularly 2nd-3rd. Just didn't feel natural. Especially compared to the 2 Honda Hornets and 1 CBR250RR I owned. Having previously had 4 4cylinder 250's over the years I guess you could say it is an obsession. The Honda ones are THE best out of the Japanese big 4. Now I have just ONE. The new Kawasaki ZX25R. The transmission feels exactly the same. Very disappointing. Lovely bike. Overall it is just tonnes better than the old one. Not having to nurse it for 5 minutes to warm up is nice. Y'all know the old ones were a hot mess when cold. Why does that transmission have to be so awful?

This is an excellent short. I ride and love Kawasaki, and I always wondered about this, but you looked into it and told me why. That's amazing. Thank you. No stupid background music, no creepy AI voice. Just bikes and knowledge. One question: why is this ONLY on Kawas? It's such a handy and simple feature, is it patented? You said they had it on old Enfields, so it can't be patent, no? I understand why you wouldn't want this on a super-high-performance Ducati doing 200, e.g., save every ounce of weight, more mechanisms means more to go wrong, etc... But why is it not otherwise ubiquitous? Strange.

I've never had a problem finding neutral on any motorcycle. It just isn't difficult, so I'm always confused to hear people complaining about it. Kawasaki's positive neutral finder can prevent engaging second gear when starting a bike while rolling and dropping the clutch. This is one of the reasons why no manufacturer other than Kawasaki doesn't include this technology today.
