A brief look at the ancient origins, history, and myths of the region of modern day Afghanistan. The region is extremely complex and with a very eventful history so this is very generalized. It also doesn't necessarily reflect the origins of all ethnic groups in modern Afghanistan, but primarily the Pashtuns, Tajiks and other Iranian peoples in the region.

I was a cold war baby, born in Kabul in '79. My mother was pregnant with me as the government collapsed and fell to the communist insurgents. My earliest memories are of New Jersey, where i grew up. Suffice it to say, the history of Afghanistan was not a part of the school curriculum. So this video isn't just a source of fascination for me, it's a revelatory glimpse into my own ancestral history. For that, I thank you.

Some of the most beautiful terrain, and people I have ever seen and interacted with were in Afghanistan. It's a pity and crying shame what's happened to it. A land where windmills were used for irrigation centuries before Europe had them; the Breadbasket of the Ancient World.....mountains where lapis lazuli, emeralds, rubies, and opals can still be found in the Rivers covered in forests, Valleys full of orchards and cultivated fields reduced to ashes the People reduced to poverty and infighting over scraps. The entire World should weep and feel ashamed for what we have done, and that includes the People of Afghanistan.

A better way to explain “STAN”, (as in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan), is that ”Stan” means “LAND”, as in “land of”, just like in European countries where for example the “Land of the English” becomes “EngLAND”. And so it goes for the rest of the European countries as it does for the “stans”: EngLAND ScotLAND IceLAND IreLAND HolLAND DeutschLAND PoLAND SwitzerLAND Here’s a fun exercise - swapping “Stan” for “land”, the names then become: Afghanland Kazakhland Kyrgyzland Pakiland Tajikland Turkmenland Uzbekland Swapping “land” for “stan”, the names become: Englishstan Scottishstan Icestan Irishstan Hollistan Germanstan Polishstan Switzerstan

Yep but the original inhabitants and defenders of that land with a long history are the pashtuns, other nations and ethnicities are proven by biological DNA indicators that pashtuns have more in similarity to those south than those north of the Hindu Kush mountains, those north were part of different empires those south were part of different empires but the pashtun have been heavily independent for millenniums unlike any other who have had empires march through, neither Alexander the Great nor the Mongols have much existence in pashtun DNA, pashtuns are the lost tribes of Israel and will soon plant their flags in Jerusalem as the prophecy states, search 'DNA haplogroup g2c pashtun' more predominate in them than all other Jewish groups, each tribe has Ashkenazi DNA in them as well, so the pashtuns are more pure blooded than any other Jews in the world for the most part, also search segmentary lineage.

If you didn't know there's a village in the most western part of Badakhshan province in Afghanistan named Ragh e Zardesht, literally Ragh of Zoroaster. It's inside Raghistan district, I find it interesting since some traditions say he was born in a city named Ragh that exactly corresponds to this city. There's also an Alborz mountain in northern Afghanistan near to Mazar I Sharif city (in Balkh province which is near the ancient capital city of Bactria). What I like to think is that Zoroaster was born in that Ragh city in eastern Bactria (modern day Ragh in western Badakhshan, Afghanistan) and died near Bactra/Balkh where Zoroastrianism likely developed, at Mazar I Sharif, hence why the mausoleum there. The theory of Zoroaster being buried there is very plausible.

Some more facts about history of Afghanistan. In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, two of the prominent places mentioned are Kamboj and Gandhara. The name Kandahar is believed to be derived from Gandhar, although the region Mahabharata is referring to seems to be further north. Kamboj is in northern parts of Afghanistan. The word for majority Afghan ethnics is Pakhtoon, which is derived from one of the ancient Hindu tribes called Pakhta. Hindu culture in Afghanistan reached it's best under Hindushahi dynasty, which finally collapsed in early 11th century and with that the Vedic element in Afghan culture declined rapidly. Immediately began waves of Islamic invasions from Afghanistan into India, which led to a whole branch of history of medieval India. Also, a very impressive sculpture artform developed in Afghanistan called the Gandhara school of art, it had beautiful fusion of Hindu and Greek art, but it completely vanished when both Greek and Hindu culture started disappearing from the region. The ancient Taxila univercity is right next to northern Afghanistan, which indicates that a lot of Afghan people must've been studying there. Afghanistan was glorious with all sorts of cultures, religions and art, to see what it is today makes me sad. No Buddhists, no Jains, not even a hundred Hindus, not even a hundred Sikhs, almost all art is dead there. It is borderline unbelievable, because although the Greek link was lost long ago, India was in cultural contact with Afghanistan up until creation of Pakistan in 1947. But Taliban has finally wiped out whatever shared culture remained.

Namaste. He didn't mention the Hindu Shahi Kingdoms, when Bharat (India) extended into Afghanistan, that were attacked and defeated by the brutal Abrahamic Islamists. A good article is: Heroic Hindu Resistance: Hindu-Sahis - guardians of Bharat’s north-western gates Excerpt: Early resistance by the three Hindu kingdoms When the Arabs set out to ‘conquer the world’, three Hindu kingdoms of Sindh, Kabul (Kapisha), and Zabul (Jabala) or Zabulistanwere ruling the north-western boundary of Bharat. Naturally, they were the first to face the brunt of the invading Islamic Arab forces. Kabul was ruled by the Hindu dynasty known as Shahi/Sahi (Turk-Shahi of Tibetan origin), believed to be originally the Little Yueh-Chi rulers, that held sway over the region extending from the river valley of Kabul (Kubha) to the Upari-Syena (Hindukush) mountains as early as 4th century CE. (Yüeh-chih, also called Indo-Scyth, ancient people who ruled in Bactria and India from about 128 bce to about 450 ce.)

In the Skjöldunga saga and the Ynglinga saga, Odin came from Asia (Scythia) and conquered Northern Europe. He gave Sweden to his son Yngvi and Denmark to his son Skjöldr. Since then the kings of Sweden were called Ynglings and those of Denmark Skjöldungs. The country name of Russia(‘the men who rowed’) is in honour of a redheaded Viking by the name of Rurik. The name Rurik is accepted to be a form of the Old Norse name Hrærekr. This has been taken as evidence that Rurik was in some way ethnically Scandinavian. The only similarly named figure described in the Carolingian Annales Fuldenses and Annales Bertiniani was Rorik of Dorestad (also spelled Rørik, Rörik, Roerik, Hrörek, etc.), a Germanic king from the royal Scylding house of Haithabu in the Jutland Peninsula. Since the 19th century, there have been attempts to identify him with the Rurik of Russian chronicles. Scylding - Old English Scylding (plural Scyldingas) and Old Norse Skjöldung (plural Skjöldungar), meaning in both languages "People of Scyld/Skjöld" refers to members of a legendary royal family of Danes, especially kings. Skjöldr (Latinized as Skioldus, sometimes Anglicized as Skjold or Skiold) was among the first legendary Danish kings. He is mentioned in the Prose Edda, in Ynglinga saga, in Chronicon Lethrense, in Sven Aggesen's history, in Arngrímur Jónsson's Latin abstract of the lost Skjöldunga saga and in Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum. Under the name Scyld he also appears in the Old English poem Beowulf. Scyld Scefing is the legendary ancestor of the Danish royal lineage known as the Scyldings. He is the counterpart of the Skioldus or Skjöldr of Danish and Icelandic sources. He appears in the opening lines of Beowulf, where he is referred to as Scyld Scefing, indicating he is a descendant of Sceafa, Scyld son of Scef, or Scyld of the Sheaf.

Odin was perceived as a god throughout the Germanic territory, not just in Scandinavia. So if he had been a man of flesh and blood, what other land did he give to his "sons"? In a few narratives in the Icelandic sagas he is portrayed as a man, but in most scriptures he is described as a god living among the other gods. One has to be extremely careful not to jump to conclusions because of similarities in language, often they are completely random.

@@user-mq5xt5jf4o Odin/Woden/etc goes back to Indo-European times (that we know of, it's hard, if not imposible, to pin point the origin). So, since IE spread through all of Eurasia, I'd say there was plenty of land to give. The similarities in language when it comes to IE and all its branches are pretty well studied and stablished. Look into the IE myths and you'll see the nordic, vedic, slav (etc) myths very clearly.

A great historic mistake is that Romanians and Romanian language evolved from Latin. Romanians are descendants of Gete/Gaeti people the name meaning "sons of mother earth". The Skits were part of the Gete people. In Romanian the word ODIN-IOARA means "in the beginning", or "in the very far past". The relationship between ODIN and ODINIOARA is undeniable. The word FIOR means "shivers" in Romanian, hence the name FIORDS. No doubt "shivers" (FIOR) went thru people who sailed thru FIORDS. Another great historical mistake, is the believing that Goths were Germanic people. The name "Goths" is a Germanic mis-pronunciation of the name Gete/Gaeti. Therefore the Goths of the Scandinavia were Romanian ancestors and the Vikings were Germanic. There were constant wars between the two nations as described in Beowulf, and at about the year 700 the Goths left Scanza (Scandinavia) and moved to Normandy. The "Latin" part of the English language is acctually from Romanian language, because Normans spoke the language Romanians speak today. The conqueror always imposes its language. In Romanian NEAMT means German. NEAM means "relative/kinfolk". I had big problems understanding the origin of the word NEAMT for "German", which implies kinfolk relationship between Romanians and Germans. Only when I read Beowulf I understood how the word came about. In Beowulf it is described how many times marriages were tried between Germanics and the Geats in order to establish peace, but always failed. The Romanian word NEAMT meaning in the same time "German" and "kinfolk" evolved from those marriages in Scandinavia. Sarmati were also part of the Gaeti/Geati nation and they controlled all the territory of Pannonia and the land to the Baltic. The word BALTA means "lake" in Romanian. Now you know the origin of the name "BALTIC" Sea. There are immense explanations in Romanian language, but so far only I am the one who insist on these great etymological facts, and I have immense problems establishing this fact, even tough I have undeniable proof. It is in hun]man nature to deny new discoveries when wrong teachings were applied earlier. In Beowulf at 195 say "the thane of Hygelac the valiant Geat" refering to Beowulf. It does not say Goth, it say Geat which is clearly Gaet/Get. The name GRENDEL is from Romanian GRAND EL meaning "the great him". P.S. I studied for more than 10 years just about all the antiquity books that survived and are translated in English. Therefore I assure you, I know more true history that all the historians together. Acctually my conclusion is that the "historians" and "scholars" know very little true history. Most of the history they teach is wrong.

I couldn't explain but I think genetic test may be able to help with some Myths being actually true. I remember our history class when I was a child in 80s suggesting some Europeans migrated from Afghanistan to Europe, but it can be the opposite as your great history lesson in this video explains. The people of Afghanistan have always been unique in comparison to other ethnic groups of the region - they are not Persians, nor Arabs... The language is also distinct from others of the Near East and Eurasia. My last name is through my marriage to a Mexican national, but both of my parents were Hungarian refugees. My father, the same as I, was very interested in history and anthropology. I am interested in the ancient steppe nomads - Scythians, Avars, etc. It is fascinating how legends like the White Stag and the Tree of Life are widespread throughout this entire region... The Persian empire and Byzantines too engaged in human trafficking. The Byzantines had a Varangian Guard and Anglo Saxon Mercenaries . In fact the Byzantines invited Turkic nomads to fight the Persian empire . Later when the Arabs expanded the Turks converted and turned against their former Greek sponsors. It's a good short and general account of the Afghan History, Culture, Religions and Traditions. Afghanistan has been a melting pot of various people and civilizations. In deed, the Afghan Nation represents an admixture of the indigenous inhabitants (mainly Pashtuns) and the non-indigenous inhabitants (mostly Hazara, Uzback and Arab). I would like to thank you for the production of this valuable video. However, I would like to mention two points that deseve to be noted with regard to the topic. 1. The word Iran as the present name for the country of Persia is very recent; about half century old. Since its adoption, the new name has become a source of a lot of confusion and distortion about the people, the habitat and languages of the Aryan Poeple, particularly, the Indo-Iranian branch of the Aryans. When one speaks of Iran and Iranic Poeple and Languages, the readers or listeners think it means Persia and the people and languages of Persia; while in fact the words respectively refer to Aryana (the native land of the Aryans) and the Aryan People and Languages. Perhaps, Persia may have been deliberately given the new name Iran with this confusion and distortion in mind, so that Persia could claim for itself the history, the original country and heritage of the Aryan People. 2. The second point is that if the origins of the ancient Pashto and Persian words are traced and a comparison of the Awestan and Vedic words (present in these two langauges) is made, it will be found that the two languages share a common ancestry. Particuarly, Pashto and Dari (the Afghan Language which had been transformed in Iran through out the history into present day Persian) appear to be very closely related to each other.

The video refers to their European traits and European ancestry, which is incorrect, Afghans have no connection with the continent of Europe. The only connection they have is that people who went to Europe and people who came to Afghanistan share ancestors. So again, their ancestors were not from Europe, but Europeans and Afghans came from the same group of people who lived in Central Asia a very long time ago. This is an important distinction.

Afghanistan is a corruption of a much earlier name Up-Gana-Sthan, which means it was a sub-province of a much larger and politically much more important region. And this important region is Gandhar, or as it is known today as Kandahar (again a corrupted name). The earliest reference to this region is from Ramayan as it was part of Ram Rajya established by Lord Ram for his sons Luv and Kush. Their descendants, primarily Bharat established a large kingdom. It was part of the kingdom of Bharat and was hence part of the larger, Bharatvarsh, more commonly known today as Akhand Bharat. During the time of Mahabharat, the region Gandhar was important as Gandhari the mother of Duryodhan came from. Much of today’s Afghanistan was actually a sub province of the previously more important Kandahar.

'Stan' suffix is direct translation in Avestan from Sanskrit 'sthan' which means place or land. From Persia to Af to current day Pak to the plains of north and hills of south India there was ONE culture with certain degrees of variations from region to region. This culture is aptly be called 'Sanatan' culture because it has all the ingredients as described in your very informative lecture. Thanks for that. The Rig Veda, as rightly indicated by you, is the oldest scripture in the region, and it mentions 'Sanatan' word. The Sanatan culture is now known as Hindu culture.

Afghanistan and many other zones in central-north Asia, such as Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan, were parts of classical Iranian(Aryan) lands. Some racial mixture occurred in the 13th century's Eastern and North Eastern Iranian territories, including Afghanistan and Tajikistan, because of Mongolian army crimes when Mongolians attacked Iran(Persia) in that century. Ahura Mazda; The literal meaning of the word Ahura is "lord," and that of Mazda is "wisdom." Avestan ahura "lord" derives from Proto-Indo-Iranian language *Hásuras, also attested in an Indian context as Rigvedic asura. As suggested by the similarity to the Old Norse æsir, Indo-Iranian *Hásuras may have an even earlier Proto-Indo-European language root. It is commonly supposed that Indo-Iranian *Hásuras was the proper name of a specific divinity with whom other divinities were later identified. In the word "huma", "hu" represents spirit, and the word "mah" in Arabic means water. In English the word "human " explains two facts which are characteristic of humanity: "hu" means God and "man" means mind, which word comes from the Sanskrit "mana", mind being the ordinary person. The Egyptian god Hu was one of the minor gods in some respects, but he was one of the most important gods for those serious about Egyptian deities. Hu is the power of the spoken word. He personifies the authority of utterance. Hu was particularly important because he was the epitome of the power and command of the ruler. Even after death, Hu was of the utmost importance to the Kings of Ancient Egypt. Hu acted as the Kings companion as the King entered the Afterlife. Through Hu, the King maintained his royal authority in the Afterlife. Hu allowed the King to cross the waters of his canal and acknowledged the Kings authority and supremacy. So far, we know Hu as the personification of Divine Utterance. However, some legends maintain that he was not just a part of creation, but that he was the creator. It is said that as Hu drew his first breath, there was in that sound the essence of his name. Hence, we have the name Hu, which sounds remarkably like the sound of an expelling breath. With each breath Hu expelled, creation took place. The first breath created the Soul of Osiris. His last creation was the Sun. So it is said that Hu is the Word of God, the first and the last breaths, Hu Hu. Hu is the oldest known God... (Chinese: 天主, Tiānzhǔ) "Heavenly Master" or "Lord of Heaven". In Sufism Hu or Huwa is the pronoun used with Allah or God. Allah Hu means "God, Just He!". In Arabic Allah means God and with Hu, as an intensive added to Allah, means "God himself." In Hebrew we find the phonetic Hu in YHWH and that of his son YehowsHUwa.

I am a Tajik from Afghanistan, and my family has witnessed Pashtun barbarity for generations where we have been forced out of our indigenous homelands many times. Pashtuns originate in areas that are part of Pakistan (Suleiman Mountains) and Southern/Eastern Afghanistan. Northern, central and western Afghanistan have always been home to Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks along with other smaller minorities. Unfortunately, Pashtunization has led to Pashtuns populations settling in those areas, but they cannot erase the owners of the land neither their history.
