Ecu’s internally usually have 3 vref (reference voltage) points but come out of the connector on multiple pins, for an example map, maf, throttle position sensor and cam sensor will all have individual wires from the ecu but internally all get the reference voltage from the same point, at high rpm this could spike from vibration or whatever and cause an issue with other circuit, cam/crank correlation being a very sensitive circuit might be the one that logs the code, It would be worth checking the vref on the cam sensor and see what your getting when the fault happens voltage may increase or drop by only 0.1v but that would be a fault. Not trying to teach you how to suck eggs, I work with ecu manufactures so thought it may help?

KB Eightyseven I pretty much suggested they take voltage and amp readings last video but sounds like they've not bothered. My theory was that at the hard cut point power draw was triggering something to pull a circuit low and cause ecu shutdown that could only cured by re-initialising where it once again would see correct voltage. Since they've changed the loom, the coils and the actual ecu and sensors then surely that leaves the voltage regulator and power circuit. If VR can't deliver what the bike is asking under heavy load ( the point at which they're getting the hard cut ) the ecu is going to be starved of voltage briefly and shutdown until load is removed and then ecu can be re-initialised with a turn off the key. What do you think? Surely a brand new oem voltage regulator and battery is worth a try.

Surely it’s a correlation fault between the cam and crank sensor, I’ve had issues in the past with crank sensor wiring which has been frayed and at high rpm causes a misfire due to poor current flow, by disconnecting the cam sensor it may be allowing it to use just one sensor as an engine speed reference

When the camshaft position signal has failed during running, the ECM determines the cylinder positions as # to be the same as before occurrence of such a failure. So when your disconnecting the CMP it goes to a default mode so to speak. This suggests the fault is occurring due to a timing issue. Based on the information I would be looking at timing chain stretch, timing alignment, chain tension or possibly CKP.

Hi boys, When you unplug the cam sensor, the ecu probably goes into a default map which allowing it to run decent. I would not bypass the sensor because it might have different maps for each gear. I would triple check every single ground (earth) on that motorcycle. Also try running an extra auxiliary ground from the engine to the frame, and from the frame to the battery. You must also be using a known good battery and voltage regulator. Faulty gauges will also cause this cut out, especially if the rev limiter gets its signal directly from the tachometer itself. Check the connections on the back of the gauges for corrosion, as well as the connection behind the fairing near the air intake. Id also check the pick up coil and reluctor wheel under the ignition cover. I believe those bikes use a dual spark ignition. Cylinders 1&3 and 2&4 fire at the same time. One cylinder is on the compression stroke and the other is on the exhaust stroke, so the exhaust stroke spark event does not matter and has no effect. A bad pick up coil will often mask itself as a faulty stick coil at the spark plug end. This is a common K5 K6 fault. It is very unlikely to have two go bad at the same time. Especially if they are paired 1&3 or 2&4. If you only have two crank triggers on the reluctor then they are paired..You can get the fault codes from the dash if you haven't already. If the fault is on paired cylinders, I'd look there. I have even seen bad coolant temperature sensors cause weird issues if the ecu cannot sense temperature properly. Good luck!

Just had a quick look at the workshop manual. The cam and cam sensors are both inductive. I regularly see polarity issues with the stand alone systems I use (artificial rev limits). It’s possible one of them is the wrong way around. This moves the timing out of spec depending on whether the ecu needs to see the voltage rise or fall after its ref point. I suspect this would be on the cam sensor as the crank wheel won’t have a missing tooth. If that is the case it may pull the timing out by as much as 10 degrees. But it is still worth checking the crank sensor. Swap the wires on each sensor and give it a run.

The most famous and iconic motorbike of all time is the one and only Suzuki Hayabusa and the next best thing that beat the top speed of the Busa ..zx14 or the ZZR14. Chris could find a 2006-2008 first series Kawasaki as he likes these bikes and Fagan could find a 2nd generation, Busa. K5 ECM has a inbuild fuel cut off circuit that could be causing this. If clutch switch is bypassed by connecting two wires, ECM starts to cut fuel at 12900rpm, so well before actual rev limiter kicks in at 13300rpm. Same thing if gear position sensor is faulty and ECM sees neutral instead of engaged gear. Removing cam timing sensor while engine runs could just drop ECM to failsafe mode that ignores the fuel cut off feature.
@TheJackman885 жыл бұрын
My first tought is how is the tone wheels on the cams, and on the crank? Checked that they are not cracked? I assume you changed the ones on the cams. I'm not familiar with the K5, so I don't know if it's part of the cam or not. Next is spacing of the sensors, checking that it's within spec. Again, problem can be on crank also. Next is where do the sensors ground? Check/clean that ground point, might be on the other side of the ECU. Or not. I assume you checked charging voltage on high rpm, and that's OK. Not overvolting. But to be honest, I would probably scoop both sensors while on the Dyno first thing. Very good bet you will see the problem right away I think. If they actually drift apart, but signal is normal otherwise, you have a mechanical issue. Tensioner, chain or sprockets most likely. Just my thoughts. Not to be a wiseguy or anything...

Scope the cam and crank signal. I’ve see on cars where someone magnetized the trigger wheel when they set down on their cart. They didn’t see a magnet under the drop cloth. I’d also inspect crank trigger. I’ve seen where someone replacing a clutch tweaked the teeth ever so slightly and vehicle would idle and run fine until it got above 4000 rpm where it would break up. If you scope them you should be able to one confirm it’s the cams and not the crank but see if it’s getting interference from something else.

Im really enjoying watching the lads trying to fix it, that is making the series interesting in its self. But worse case I don't mind watching a video where you guys just set the bike on fire that would make a good watch..
