Such nice workmanship Mike. Thank you for taking the time to share these mods. I’m definitely going to incorporate these into my build when the time comes.

Nice Mike. I bought my -8 and access is a pain compared to the -4 I built. Smart in thinking ahead for access to your brakes and I like where you put your battery. Keeping the solenoid next to the battery instead on the firewall keeps your hot wire short. Great safety feature.

Mike, were did you get, or how did you make that 90 degree vent tube in your forward baggage area? I like the idea of moving that vent line so it can't bee seen.
@therv-8pilot Жыл бұрын
Hi David, I purchased it from Aircraft Spruce. It isn’t the cleanest looking in the baggage area but accomplished what I wanted, hiding the hose from view in the fuselage. Here is the link: www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/2dia90tube.php?clickkey=6660338

Do these quarter turn screws need any additional work than the regular screws? And I guess they go into nutplates as well?
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
They are actually two parts, the screw assembly and the receptacle. They come in both a flush and non-flush version. You also have to chose the length of screw based on how thick the material is. Here is a link to them on Aircraft Spruce for you to visualize. www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/camloc2700.php?clickkey=4203

Are you buying sheet aluminum from aircraft spruce for the additional panels or duplicate parts from vans and modifying them?
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
Everything is from sheet either from Aircraft Spruce or Air Venture in the fly mart.
@martinrenschler40463 жыл бұрын
I would think that the original panel bolted in all around with #8 screws provides more rigidity to the fuselage than the quarter turn fastened panel can provide. Are you sure that panel is just cosmetic and not structural?
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
Now Vans won’t give their official blessing on any modification that they didn’t design. With that said I spoke in detail with a Vans team member at OSH about this mod and they didn’t have any unofficial objection to it. I have seen RV-8’s that don’t have the panel in at all during phase one. Always do you own research before doing any modification like I did.
@bullhead9002 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, do you happen to know the part number on the cam locks?
@therv-8pilot2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bullhead, I got them from Aircraft Spruce. They are the Camloc 2600 with the Phillips head. You just need to add up the thickness of the two materials and get the length that works with that number. Here is the link to that page. www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/camloc2600.php?clickkey=31622 Then you just need to get the Camloc receptacle to go with the studs. Cheers, Michael

nice work! what is the reason for the elbow for the fresh air ? Why not just a scat hose from the NACA to the airvent?
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
I wanted the hose somewhat hidden from view as I sat in the plane and that elbow allowed for the run to be higher. I could have easily just ran hose and let it hang down a little…just a personal choice!

@@therv-8pilot thanks and I can totally relate. I‘ve used a P-Clamp to secure it as high as possible on the geartower so one can barely see it :)
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just didn’t like seeing it so the elbow worked to solve that. Downside is it impedes in the baggage area. I haven’t had an issue with it yet as most of the stuff Up there is small and works around it.

Hi Mike - I saw you were using a type of wiring bracket on the forward side of the left gear tower to position and immobilize the wiring for fuel pump. I looked on ACS for it but didn’t see it. Could you please point me in right direction? Warm regards, Drum
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
Hi Drum, instead of a Molex style connector I used a two place terminal block. I figured that if I used a molex style connector I would also have to secure it with something as well so it wasn’t flopping around. The terminal block solved both needs, providing a removable connection and securing it to the structure. I bought mine here: NTE Electronics 25-B500-02 Series 25-B500 Terminal Block Barrier Strip, Dual Row Panel Mount, 20 Amp, Dual Row, 2 Pole, 9.50 mm Pitch, 300V, 22-14 AWG Wire Range www.amazon.com/dp/B0195UWAQ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_ZSTZQ42HRBGDTKF84EDP

@@therv-8pilot Thanks. Today, I went through a CNC machine scrap bin and took a terminal block from one of the controllers which I think will work ok. It looks similar to the one you have but it has three terminals. I might put an adel nearby if there is a need. Thanks for the response. Warm regards, Drum

I do but doing a video on it would be tough as they really only consist of a flop tube in each tank. I wouldn’t be able to show anything. Here is a link to my blog that shows one of my posts that shows better detail than I would be able to video. www.rv8-hangar.com/rib-mods-done/ Do a search on my site for flop tube and you will see several posts on how they get installed and the extra tasks that are required if you run with a flop tube.
