It is very clean. I have had things from a wingtip block my aileron before. The first time was in a Brave 400, the landing light plexiglass had been broken and not completely cleaned out from the wingtip. It vibrated down and protruded out into the aileron and blocked it. Thankfully I was on the ground when it happened. The second time was a bird strike that caused enough damage to bind against the wingtip but I was able to over power the binding for a safe landing. I would Never put any point of failure in the gap between my aileron and wingtip.

Hello, I’m considering a very similar engine and prop setup for the RV-7 that I’m building. I would like to have a smoke system, but I will not be doing inverted fuel or oil on my project. I would probably go with the lower compression version that Aerosport offers, because I would like to burn 91 octane fuel. Otherwise I will probably have the exact same set up as you. I suspect that yours must be the higher compression version because you said it made 200 hp. Are you happy with your engine and prop choice? If you were to do it over again, what would you change? At the moment I’ve just rolled the canoe over, and I’m putting the tail feathers on as well as building seats. Any guidance or advice that you could provide would be much appreciated. I’ve looked at engine dehydration for sometime. I firmly believe it can’t hurt so no harm no foul. I bought a drybot and use this in my 177RG. Only thing that keeps coming to mind is if they work so well and prevent corrosion then why doesn’t everyone have one. There is a good info out there from what I can see will give at least 30 days protection on cam lobes if engine is under 15% humidity. I’m not sure why you have it turn off the pump via the sensor as it’s a closed system the dryer the better. I would leave it running all the time. Interested to see if the desiccant last longer running full time or on a cycle. Looks like a good DIY system
@therv-8pilot5 ай бұрын
The switch, like most things in the RV’s is overkill, but with the closed system the humidity level rises very very slow once it’s been reduced to under 15%. So the switch really only save money by not running all the time. You certainly could just run it 24/7. Regards, Michael

No there is nothing to sell, he just made what he thought would work well. I tweaked it to better suite my “nerd” side. The internals are pretty simple. Aquarium air pump, descent beads, humidity sensor and a switch. Make it a closed loop and it works well. I’m an airline guy and only spent my early years in GA flying until I built my -8. So I was always taught that the moisture leaves after you run an engine for an hour or so. The results from this device say otherwise. Your mileage may very!

Looks good, have been considering something like this for my Florida bird. Would that have to be modified for a 172? Maybe I need to rewatch the vid, but the idea is to return the air via the oil breather?
@therv-8pilot Жыл бұрын
Yes I think the idea was to build on to the idea where we were opening the oil dipstick to allow moisture to escape. We introduce very dry air in through the oil breather line and it exits the oil filler cap. Not saying it’s a perfect design but it seems to work well. The challenge is the connections at the engine. The filler cap was fairly easy to solve but the breather line added some complexity. I actually redesigned my line, I can do the with the experimental, and made it easier for me to access. Each aircraft will be deferent. We discussed a plug of some sort with a nipple that would just plug into the breather line but decided that a hose over it was easier.

Immediately after every flight I open the oil cap and let the steam come out while I'm putting away the plane. Usually by the time I get everything put away and the hangar door closed the steam has stopped. Not sure how much water I remove this way, but I figure every little bit helps. I'm going to look into making one of your rigs to take care of the moisture I've left behind. Thanks for posting it.

Neato. Burning hydrocarbons makes CO2 and water. Some gets past the rings as a gas. The "run it hot to dry it out" thing sounds like it should work, but it ignores the steady source of water, like the way it drips from the exhaust of an idling car or makes a contrail. Scientism - the belief in something because it sounds scientific. Hooking up your gizmo while the engine is still hot is the best thing, I'd imagine. You prompted me to think about this for the first time. Thanks!

Why did you make the flap up switch on the stick raise the flaps all the way up? I assume you would never use that on a go around? Trying to understand it. I’m thinking mine would increment up just like down.
@therv-8pilot Жыл бұрын
I had it step up initially but this airplane, with 200HP, accelerates so fast that I went right through the max flap speed. So I have it got straight up with one click. If I’m flight the final approach at a speed of 70Kts IAS and I go around I hit 100Kts IAS very quickly so I need the flaps to retract fast. So one click is much easier for me. Not for everybody I guess but that the fun of experimental aviation!

certainly looks convenient. I am not familiar with the RV builds, but is this panel acting as a firewall? The new cutout would make the panel unsealed and as we know, fire (or air) would go into any crevices; meaning, this panel is no longer a firewall. But I am not sure if it can still meet the criteria as a firewall.. so maybe, maybe not.

Please follow up on this vid with 1) details on the vent plumbing 2) the high pressure plumbing through the fuse 3) the firewall penetration details 4) the FWF plumbing and 5) the electrical wiring, how you power it and the switch to control it. Any mods you’d make to your install if you could do it over?
@therv-8pilot Жыл бұрын
Hi luckymacy. So I followed Smokingairplanes install instructions. The vent plumbing needs a high spot to prevent siphoning. 1)I ran the line up to my fill spout and then straight down through the baggage floor. It terminates at a pulled rivet that they supply. That rivet is placed on the outside of the bottom fuselage skin with the mandrel removed making it a port similar to a static port. 2) The high pressure line runs along the left hand side just outboard of the left most floor rib. I ran it through snap bushings and zip tied where needed. It runs forward through the gear tower and curves from the left forward side wall to the firewall. See in this blog post: www.rv8-hangar.com/control-sticks-smoke-oil-fill/ 3) See the alcove post for the supplied T that they give you. Keep in mind I went with the two line firewall forward kit versus one line. 4) See this blog post for the firewall forward plumbing: www.rv8-hangar.com/smoke-system-spray-nozzles/ Again I just followed their instructions and where to place the nozzles. Keep in mind the clearance for the cowl as you may get rubbing if you are not careful. 5) They supply a panel for their switch and CB’s. I used their parts but incorporated them into my left side panel. See this blog post for a photo of that side console: www.rv8-hangar.com/consoles-and-wiring/ It is powered by the VP-X. I also have a remote momentary on switch on my control stick located at my right hand thumb spot. This is what I use for 90% of the time that way in an instant I can remove the power from the system by letting up on my thumb. I wouldn’t change anything as I have it setup. It fills super easy with no mess. I can remove the system in under 15 minutes and install in the same time. I’m glad I went with the two nozzle as it produces a great mole trail. Hope that helps you and thanks for watching the video! Regards, Michael
