It is very clean. I have had things from a wingtip block my aileron before. The first time was in a Brave 400, the landing light plexiglass had been broken and not completely cleaned out from the wingtip. It vibrated down and protruded out into the aileron and blocked it. Thankfully I was on the ground when it happened. The second time was a bird strike that caused enough damage to bind against the wingtip but I was able to over power the binding for a safe landing. I would Never put any point of failure in the gap between my aileron and wingtip.

This worked great for me on my RV10, I set a rivet in the end instead of a screw and drilled holes in the block above the screw to view that the pins are in. Used biolube on the pins and just push them in using the block. Will be doing backer rod layups next, great idea thanks for sharing.

Awesome! I’m just passing on what I have learned from other talented builders. That’s a great idea about the “witness” holes to see the pin’s are in place. I love chatting with other builders and having them add their ideas to keep improving the mods we do.

Wow, thanks for adding this video! I had read lots of times about the hinge technique but could never wrap my head around it until I saw this.

Thank you, it really does make for a clean look. I had seen several RV’s that did it before me and really likes the look!

Love this idea and am going to do it on my RV-10. I can see how it would be easy to drill the holes in one side or the other. I'm having trouble picturing how to drill the other side of the hinge and keep them aligned to the other side. Which side did you mount first (wing I'm guessing) and how did you get the other side straight?? Thanks.

@@therv-8pilot , no no....thank you! Love your solution...both using the hinge (offset nicely) and the use of baker rod to give depth to fiberglass stiffner. Smart.

Great mod! The challenge with mods is that you quickly double the time you spend building and lose out on flying. How many hours would you say you spend on both tips? Just the work to fit the hinges? Thanks.
@therv-8pilot3 ай бұрын
I joke around and say that every extra mod costs me 40 hours. The wing tips added around that amount. For me that was totally worth it for the looks and ease of removal. Your milage may vary! Regards, Michael

Nice. Did you use archer nav antenna?

No I used two COMANT antennas under the fuselage.

Did you do anything special to keep the trailing edge from moving up and down? I did the same setup but find there’s just enough play between the hinge eyes to allow some movement of the TE. Doesn’t seem to effect anything in flight but it’s annoying on the ground to not have it secure.
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
The only thing I did on the trailing edge was to fill in the space at the aft edge with epoxy and flox. I did that because I split the training edge a little to try and get the alignment just right. Once I did I stood the wingtips upright, with the trailing edge down. I taped off the inboard edge from the trailing edge to about an inch up. Then I poured in a epoxy/flox mix that was runny enough to fill in that area. All that being said I didn’t do it for any movement like you describe. I didn’t have any play in mine at all and are very stiff.
@akarmy13 жыл бұрын
@@therv-8pilot ok interesting. On mine it seems that the hinge eyelets have extra play. It’s not the actual TE flexing. Maybe the hinge material you got was closer tolerance. Thx for the info! Beautiful RV-8 you built!

Also did you waterproof the lens for lights?
@therv-8pilot3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t do anything special for the lenses. They keep the water out by themselves without any issues so far. I considered running a very thin adhesive backed seal from McMaster Carr but only if I had issues with water penetration.

A hint: At the end of the hinge pin do not grind down the tip to a concentric point. Instead grind the tip point slightly off center. This comes in handy if you have slights alignment, esp. at the beginning of the curve.
@therv-8pilot2 жыл бұрын
Great tip! I actually rounded my pin end instead of a point. I found it worked better that way for me. Thanks for the comment and watching! Michael
