Awesome step-by-step video on swapping diff's on a GS400! I've done this in my driveway more times than I'd prefer, and I have nothing much to add. When I bought my $300 junkyard rear diff (came of an LS400), I opened her up and measured the backlash and runout, and found they were within factory specs. Not that I would've done anything different if the measurements were a little off. I love how an old, dirty gear box can look so clean and shiny on the inside! Watching your clean, meticulous video was exciting, and I'll try to not write another book! I'm glad you didn't forget any of the companion flange bolts too, lol! Driving my GS with all 6 bolts in the front flange (versus 5) has been quite nice, as all of the nasty vibration modes and odd tapping noises are gone. I recently installed a dual electric exhaust cutout system, located in the bend in front of the mufflers. When they are "open", the cutouts are not as loud (nor sweet) as when there were only cutouts (no mufflers at all; how it was when I bought the car). Probably b/c the electric cutouts only open the shorter route, but they don't close the longer path, so some of the pressure still goes through the mufflers. I may install shorter resonators like you did, to compensate for this problem. I also have the same grey/tan interior as your GS, and I'm lucky that mine came in a similar super-clean condition! My GS came with the ancient Nakamichi touchscreen navigation system, which also controls the HVAC. I discovered that I could pull the entire system, and buy the standard HVAC controller module (the one you have at the top of your center console), and install a double din android stereo where the navigation system was, to upgrade to a modern nav/multimedia system. Both the plastic stereo trim kit, and the fake wood sticker on the HVAC controller, were not worthy, so I laminated both with real burled walnut veneer and an 1/8" of clear table top epoxy (the 2nd attempt turned out dope!). Now the rest of the factory wood trim looks inferior, dough! I also replaced the LED's behind the HVAC controller (half were burned out). I used "WLJH 10x Green T4.2 Neo Wedge Led 3030 Chipest 10mm". Then I replaced the OEM interior lighting bulbs with white LED's (9LEXGS30098-05W), which made a huge difference (I didn't know how much I hated the yellow incandescent interior lights!). You'll also need these for the 2X under-dash lights: WLJH 6x T5 LED Wedge Bulbs Canbus Error Free 74 73 17 Extremely Bright White 3030 Chipsets. I know most of this has nothing to do with your awesome rear diff swap, but I want to give a little back to the GS community, and I'm honored to drop it here :) Stay awesome Bud!

The IS300 is a little piggy for its size. So going for a cam with a peak of around 5200-5500. That'll be great for all round torque curve, and way better mileage than the 2j dog.

Stock cams (4) and 3.7 as mentioned in the vid. Most my viewers have zero desire to screw with a r/p swap and are looking for an easy, budget swap instead. 3.5 would be a sweet spot on the 1UZ, but it’s so close to 3.7 that swapping the entire 3.7 diff is easier and more economical.

Of course. If it’s a 2GS 430.

Is it a lot quicker with that gear? I just bought a 3.92 gs300 diff for my 99 ls400. A little nervous of rpm at 80.
@ForwardMomentum3 жыл бұрын
It made a very noticeable difference in acceleration. Unfortunately it pushed my old tranny over the edge and fried a couple clutch packs. So I manual swapped it. 😎
@cornertaken66273 жыл бұрын
@@ForwardMomentum how many miles did your trans have and why would it fry? And it fried it with the shift kit? My trans is rebuilt with new clutch packs. Think I should be good and I also have to install the shift kit?
@ForwardMomentum3 жыл бұрын
The diff acts as a force multiplier, so the only thing I can surmise is that it was on the edge of going out for some time. 166K miles. It shifted perfectly otherwise, but WOT acceleration resulted in a noticeable 1-2 slip and occasionally 2-3 if I held it that long. I guess there’s a chance it was the TC, but now I’ll never know. 🤣

@ForwardMomentum9 ай бұрын
Yeah, lots of rumors out there. Typically it’s from crappy tuning. Then the ring lands go and then other stuff. Everyone likes to focus on the size of the rods, which certainly come into play at some point, but with a safe tune these can handle 6-8psi easily.

Maintenance items first. Lower ball joints should be #1. Once maintenance is in order and you want to mod it, it really just depends on your style.

0-60 time difference?
@ForwardMomentum3 жыл бұрын
0-60 isn’t a good measure because with this diff the 2-3 shift must occur prior to 60, unlike when it had the 3.27. I can assure you the car was much quicker from a dig under the exact same circumstances. It felt like the car shed 100-150lbs. Best way I can describe it.

Define “really cheap.” I’m guessing no cheaper than the $250 I spent on this one. Locking diffs suck around turns anyway. I’m trying to keep this thing as OEM+ as I can.
