Get a Wiim & fosi v3 for the same price and now you have streaming with the wiim, turn on the wiim option to control the volume of the V3, you also have a EQ for room correction. And the V3 d class amp sounds a lot better that that cheap AB amp. Oh yea with the wiim app you can control everything with your phone or tablet. I think that might be a better option.

I farted around with the chi fi concept and came to the same conclusion - all the pieces, patches, chip upgrades, adapters etc became quickly not cheap and of questionable quality. I did the exact thing- bought the RS 202 - I really like it. I get good quality and lots of built in features- I rarely turn it up to 11 and the power is more than enough for me - thanks for the vid - I feel like I did the right thing 😊

Just another opinion in this video - I understand. But many folks - even some audiophiles - are searching and experimenting with various budget, compact amplifiers units for use on desktop, near-field systems and or small rooms with limited space. Fosi is gradually improving their models and they seem to be listening to people and their feedback. For example, there are those of us who could care less about Blue Tooth and would rather used RCA or XLR connections. I had some discrete Sparkos Labs Op Amps laying around, inserted them into the V3 and what a difference that has made. I can now highly recommend this amp without reservation. I also tried both the MUSES02 IC based OpAmp, and the Burson V5i versions - all improved the sound and I'm glad that Fosi gave us the option of OpAmp rolling. Again - it's the size. Why would I want a large, budget model such as the Yamaha. So for those of us who prefer compact components for a desktop, near-field scenario, the Yamaha recommendation may not fit at all. So when doing these You Tube videos, do realize that not everyone will view their audio endeavors through a prism such as yours.

I have a yamaha Rx-v 685. I know thats a home theathre amp. For music I did not like its sound. I have plugged in a fosi d class amp to the front line-out, so DSP and preamp comes from yamaha, but the amp is for fosi. The difference of the sound quality is night and day. Well I bought the Yamaha R-S202 thinking it would have the same “natural” sound, as from their receivers many years ago. Wow, was I wrong! Someone should erase the name Yamaha from this amp. The sound was horrible, totally dead with no life or spunk at all. I’m 70 now and remember the real Yamaha natural sound. This new amp never comes close. Yet the sound from the small Fosi amp with the tpa3255 chip is great. It is so crystal clear and alive; especially the voices in my music. For me there is no comparison so I sold the Yamaha amp. BTW, I’m using the Fosi amp with a Bluesound Node streamer/preamp as the source, and a pair of MartinLogan electro motion ESL speakers. I don’t know how Fosi does it, but that little amp has no problem powering those “large” electrostatic speakers. I have put the mono block amps I previously used, away in storage. The Fosi amp sound is much “warmer” than the mono blocks, and I like that sound much better.

Yeah, my last "true budget" amp, was a Yamaha RX-V375 receiver. It had 97.68 extra things I NEVER used on it. It was hot enough to heat my room in the winter, and heated better than my A/C could cool in summer and probably raised my electric bill $80/mo. It lasted about 6 months until a failing relay or trans-discombobulate-aducer thingyma-dunowhat started making a constant popping noise. Now it's taking up space in a corner waiting for me to get sick of looking at it and toss it out. Meanwhile, my Fosi V3 is rocking the house with little/no heat, or space used on my desk. To me it doesn't sound like magic or anything, pretty much the same as the Yamaha or even my older, tiny little Facmogo S800 (TPA3116), now that $29 thing was a bargain, but it is well built and I expect will last a long time. If you don't need all the in/outs on a receiver, a space heater, or something to fill your desktop space, these little amps are friggin' awesome.

Sorry but the quoted price does NOT apply here in the UK. The Yamaha R-S202BL (bluetooth version) is £430+ (from Amazon as of today 23rd of June) and the non-bluetooth version is £300 from Richer Sounds. The Fosi V3 with upgraded Power Supply (48V/5A) and an additional machined knob (orange) is £99 (delivered). _Let's say_ (ibid) that I want a compact, no fuss, decently made, well-reviewed amplifier that will not break the bank and won't occupy the same footprint as a big microwave. _Let's say_ that I want it for my second system in my bedroom...yeah, I choose the Fosi V3.

Fosi advertises the V3 as just a 2 channel stereo amplifier, nothing more nothing less. So people know what they are getting when buying the V3 over the yamaha reciever. These small chifi amps are so versatile. I have a fosi tb10d hooked up to a chromecast audio on my balcony as an outdoor streaming system all controlled from my smartphone. The simplicity of controlling the volume and streaming from a smartphone instead of a remote control and the versatile mounting options are things that make these small amplifiers more appealing than a full size reciever. Planning on getting the v3 to power two buttkicker mini lfe transducers. The v3 can do a better job at powering the buttkickers than the yamaha and it can be mounted in an area where it can be hidden unlike the yamaha. Why pay more for features that you dont need.

SA, you're exactly right. The Yamaha is far more feature-rich for only about 60 bucks more than the Fosi. But for the application I'm considering, the Fosi will do nicely. And I think folks with similar needs amount to somewhat more than 1 % of the market. I have an old amp that drives my secondary system in my living room that looks to need replacement; sharing a shelf unit with my flatscreen and soundbar. I don't need a tuner, headphones, bluetooth, remote, multiple inputs. All I use it for is playing CDs with my Sony changer. The Fosi has the advantage of being very small, while providing reportedly very good sound. So I'm inclined to give it a try.

Incorrect. The Yamaha only goes down to 40 hz and has no subwoofer output. It also utilizes 16 gauge wire spring clips instead of binding posts. I own both the Yamaha RS202 and a Fosi TB10D. The Bluetooth and radio on the Yamaha is anemic. A dac with a remote or a Wiim mini combined with a Fosi 3255 chipset amp does everything the Yamaha does only a lot better and still less expensive. I know because I've had both for quite some time

@@scientificaudiophile the last page of the owners manual under specifications lists audio section output as 40 Hz to 20kHz. The 10 to 100kHz is listed in parentheses on the second line of the cd section right after the first line stating 20Hz to 20,000kHz. Mine has not, under any circumstances, output down to 10Hz. And yes, I've ran the Yamaha head to head against the Fosi TB10D using the speaker level inputs on my SVS sub. Don't get me wrong, the Yamaha is fine in a small to medium sized room (like the Fosi, neither one has enough output for my basement) but the radio and Bluetooth are way beyond inferior compared to a Wiim mini. The only reason to get the Yamaha is if one plans on having multiple components connected to it. For me personally, I don't listen to my cd's anymore and rather enjoy the hidden talents of a Wiim/Fosi combo. The build quality and remote is nice on the Yamaha though. It's just been surpassed in performance for the dollar.
@scientificaudiophile
@scientificaudiophile Жыл бұрын
You’re misreading the specs. The 40hz-20khz under amp spec is to achieve a minimum 100 watts power output at 0.2% distortion, the amp output drops down to 10 hz and I’d assume distortion ticks up. I’m assuming this is where they get their +-0.3dB spec as well. The CD section shows the amps full capabilities, but from 10-100khz the difference can be +- 3dB. For the +-0.5 dB spec it’s 20-20khz.

Former working musician here and Yamaha is beloved by many of my colleagues. Why? Because of the input options, tank-like build, decent fidelity and it WON'T break your budget. Their amplifiers are most forgiving of ersatz inputs, and goofy speakers. I don't think Fosi has a similar track record.

The point is *very* well made and I will not contest it. However, there is good use for these single input amplifiers... One example is to add better sound to a smart TV with a decent pair of floor standing speakers. Another is use with an existing HTPC setup, to improve playback quality from a DAC... The v3 is a good amp ... when used in it's realm. The Yamaha is made for a different purpose.

I like the R-S202's networking "brother", the R-N303 which does include a phono pre-amp stage, plus optical and coaxial digital inputs, streaming, and the ability to cast (via the network rather than Bluetooth) from Windows, iPhones and Android phones. Be aware, though, that the WiFi is only 2.4G, so I'd recommend using the wired network port. I also like to listen to the radio, and listen to FM more than anything when I need background music, thanks to my local Public Radio station, KCRW in Los Angeles. I know there are those who will still criticize the "entry" level of both of these receivers. Well, you can spend about $4,000 USD for the R-N2000A, but then you'll probably need to spend another $800 on a power cord to imagine the best possible sound out of it.

Seems like an apples to oranges comparison between a "separate", and an integrated amp. The Yamaha doesn't need a pre-amp, because it is an integrated amp, and all the differences that are highlighted point that out. The only thing I do wish some of the affordable 2-channel separates would offer, would be an internal power supply rated for the amp's capacity. If the V3 can handle 48vdc@10 amps, then it should be available with that. And considering that the rectifier of the power supply is where AC noise will get handled before converting to DC, having that power supply inside the chassis and shielded somewhat by the casing from EMI, and short DC runs, that would seem like a better up-sell than having an external brick, and a longer DC cable outside of the casing. But knocking an all-analog 2-channel amp for being what it is, and not being an integrated amp, seems a bit odd. The Yamaha may be a high value integrated amp, but not an apples-to-apples comparison.

You forgot to mention the biggest difference between the 2, with the Yamaha you also get the Yamaha sound, and you just cant put a price on that. But for the Fosi the only advantage it would have to me, and the only reason id consider it for is the size difference, It can inconspicuously go on a desk and be perfect to repurpose some old bookshelf speakers into a PC speaker setup, but the best amp under $400 as some audiofools would say, it is definitely not. It is funny because if the shills on youtube just sold it as only being designed for desktop use (as there is only 1 input and no remote) they could retain some kind of credibility while I'm sure also making plenty of pennies off their Amazon affiliate links, but they just have to keep jumping the shark with outlandish claims again and again.

Well the RS202 was discovered first by our Elder God named Steve Guttenberg. Many years ago, but audiophiles were busy with accuphase, luxmans, roksans and other "signature"thingie amps. So his discovery was kinda lost in all that noise, and only poor guys like me bought RS202, cause yamaha "has a sound". I appreciate your vids a lot like I appreciate my RS202. Being poor sometimes is really cool, I feel like joining communist party.

Yeah... if you start from absolute scratch all your points are quite valid. However... most people drawn to this already have alot of tools/toys. "Radio" eeh? Many have access to millions of songs at a few touches distance... why listen to something random totally out of your control? ...anyway, that's just my perspective.

@@scientificaudiophile noise, distortion, etc? Because the Fosi was measured recently at ASR and has quite remarkable values. It for sure does not serve as a main amp in a complete system, but for a small desktop set-up with just a source and bookshelf speakers, it might be quite a good option.
@jari121
@jari121 Жыл бұрын
I would use that Fosi only as a power amp with a good dac/preamp. The better option could be the SMSL AO200 (balanced with bluetooth and many EQ options) for 250$ with a good dac/preamp and the Wiim mini or the Google Chromecast audio (what I use). Streaming is easy with them using the phone app. I owned the Yamaha R-3 receiver from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. At that time it was a good value for the price. If I wanted to buy a cheap Class AB amp right now, it would probably be the Yamaha AS-301.

I don't have this V3 but has another small amp on my desk connected to my pc and dac. Limiting space and price are the main reasons of course. Would like to see more smaller amp from Yamaha like their WXA-50 and WXC-50 came out some years ago but looks like that Yamaha has stopped developing that line.

It looks like they have stopped developing that line, but they still make them. But the amp runs $600, so quite a bit more expensive.

The reason people buying the Fosi V3 is because of their SINAD. I don't even think Yamaha is close to compete. Correct me if I am wrong.
@scientificaudiophile
@scientificaudiophile Жыл бұрын
People buying the Fosi are getting a great little amp, especially if they spend more money on the 48 volt power supply and can get more than 34 watts stereo into 8 ohm speakers. If you’re reading ASR, the SINAD of the Yamaha WXA-50 beats the Fosi, has a built in power supply, has a load of inputs and does streaming. But it’s not budget, costing $400 more.

Strange specs on that Yamaha never seen that before.. That you say it can do 10 to 100 000 Hz.. But just that they want to hit that 100 wattage... at the easiest preconditions that they can at 8 Ω so that it don't need to deliver that much current. And on top of that and even it can amplify from 10 Hz they specify that 100 watts from 40 Hz.. because it most likely dont have the power supply that supports more current delivery below 40 hz.. And in the end they got their 100 watt rating... wow what they try hard to get the numbers they want! 😢 Specifications: Förstärkareffekt:2x100 Watt (8 Ohm, 40-20.000 Hz, 0.2 % THD) Frekvensomfång:10 - 100.000 Hz (For the YAMAHA R-S202D II) The fossi has been measured to be able to deliver with 48v power supply in burst mode over 220 watts in 4 Ohm.. But wattage is not everything but clearly much more than duble amount of watts then Yamaha will ever being able to deliver.. So like you say it depends on what you are after. I have a external power switch for whole of my system and fir me I could have fossi as a Poweramp and it at full volume and never use its own switch on the volume knob and krt my oreamp DSP do the job.

So, I just bought a R-S202 and I wanted to try it with headphones before connecting it to the speakers. Yes, I disconnected the power to speakers A and B via the panel before connecting the headphones, just like it says in the manual. I switched the radio on (in my case DAB because I live in Europe), and the first thing I hear is noise in the left channel. The noise even increased a bit after the first minutes. It's barely audible when you crank up the volume, but it's there all the time at a constant level, until you turn the volume all the way down (0). Is this normal? Cheap circuit design? Can anyone confirm the same issue? Haven't tried with speakers yet.

Interesting comparison.... as you've heard the Fosi V3 - if coupled with the optional 48v 5 amp power supply, would it have enough current to power a surround set of bookshelf speakers (8 ohms, 88db sensitivity) when used downstream from the AV processor, and in an 5 x 4 metre room. I do listen at near Dolby reference levels with a 5.2 system. Some reviews claim that it can't play very loud, but the specs would seem to say otherwise. Obviously one cannot hear it before you buy, so would be interested in yours or anyones comments as to it's suitablity for use in an AV system to power surrounds etc...
@scientificaudiophile
@scientificaudiophile Жыл бұрын
FOSI with the 48v ps is a much more powerful amp. It also raises the price $25. Coupled with a 4ohm speaker it will sound very good, but not 8 ohm, as it’s frequency response is load dependent and rises significantly in the treble range with 8ohm speakers.

You are not making any sense. We don't give a shit about bluetooth. Soundwise the Fosi beats the yamaha handsdown. You can even switch opamps. Add the SMSL M300se dac/headphone to the V3 and you're in heaven.
@scientificaudiophile
@scientificaudiophile Жыл бұрын
I love the SMSL M300se and I'm not knocking on the Fosi one bit. But this is a budget comparison, and by adding a $120 DAC the Fosi/SMSL combo is now a $210 purchase. Add in a balanced to RCA cable to make the connection and you're at $220 - and you still can't turn off the Fosi remotely. You still lack FM/AM radio. Nothing at all wrong with combination you mentioned, but it's 20% more expensive than the Yamaha.

Less is more. I already own the Fosi BT20A pro and did not want the tone controls and bluetooth. The bluetooth you could not turn off and a neighbour hijacked my system. Plus bt sounds like garbage. Also less in the signal path is better. I left my controls in the centre anyhow, so this V3 is more bare bones. Exactly what I wanted. Feature rich that is poorly implement is just a waste of money and suckers in the people who want an all-in-crappy one unit.
