My 6 year old daughter came out with me last spring for the first time ( at the time I had only been prospecting for a few months) and she got a nice flake of gold on her first pan. I was so unbelievably stoked and amazed, I had only given her a half shovel of likely dirt in a ten inch pan, loaded mine and simply said " just copy what I do with mine" I panned my pan (nothing), I discarded my cons. " Dada is this gold?" I checked and behold: top and centre a nice little flake sitting on its lonesome with all black sands washed far below! Little cutepie is a better panner than me on her first go! Hahahah

The "topaz" you found first in the video is more likely glass or maybe quartz mate. The jagged edges are a giveaway. Topaz is harder and tends to round off more smoothly. It also doesn't usually form flat like that. The "rubies" are Zircons and can be red-ish, brown-ish, purple-ish and even yellow-ish (aka Champaign). They have been upgraded from semi-precious to precious in the last couple of years. When you find one that is not real worn, they are usually a square-ish or rectangular shape and have a kind of metallic sheen. Well done on the Sapphires mate.

@@officialtassieboysprospecting In addition to some of these very red zircons as suggested by Mary, some might also be garnets, in particular spessartine types. Although ruby shouldn't be dismissed entirely, but they are very rare here. The folks at MRT are always interested in studying the zircons/garnets from this area.

Very nice Levi. I've been hoping that you'd do a Weld River trip. It's a beautiful location, and has a nice little camp ground. Sieving is hard work (My back starts to hurt after awhile) One good tip for you that I've started doing myself, is to try and scoop off all the centre spinel area after you've done a quick check into a separate bucket to take home. Some of the dark stones I've found are actually just really dark blue Sapphires. (And the dark blue's are generally the best) I would have missed a few of them without decent light behind them.

Weld river is also know as marina river, if i remember correctly. The one that's mainly accessed by the small road across from the Marina Golf club, right? I've gone there a lot with family. We've managed to find a good amount of sapphires, mostly low quality but nothing bigger than gravel lol; heaps Blue Sapphires, a couple Star Sapphires and Green Sapphires, maybe one or two yellow sapphires and white sapphires. Some nice clear and coloured topaz. Stupid amounts of zircon. Some jasper. Couple pieces of quartz, i think... they could've been from Gladstone though, lol.
