Bigger garnets may not fit through the holes of your classifier. Rather than throwing the rocks aside, if you flip the classifier upside down carefully and examine the heavies that had been on the bottom, but when flipped over are on the top, you may find some big garnets.

In case you don’t know, Mercury is everywhere. I coats gold and makes it look silver. If you get a piece of gold with mercury on it and put it in your bottle it will quickly cover all the other gold. The only way to get it off is to heat the gold until the mercury evaporates around 400f. Do it outside, don’t stand downwind. Just keep an eye out for stuff in your pan that acts like gold but looks silver.

@uncletigger Mercury is a naturally-occurring chemical element found in rock in the earth's crust.

Try to find a curve in the stream, dig at the outside bend of the curve, that will give you the best chance of finds, that's why the old timers would call it "High Banking"

Had an old boyfriend bring me back a piece of granite from Greenland that was studded with garnets. Cool finds all over the world. Garnets are 7.0 on the Mohs scale and were used along as an abrasive grinding agent.

My maternal grandmother's given name was Garnet. She had a whim of iron and clearly recalled her grandfather getting together with his comrades, drinking Pennsylvania whisky, and telling horror stories of the War of Southern rebellion as she hid behind the entry staircase. Yeah, I'm kinda old these days myself.

after watching this I got super inspired and went into the river near my house with a bucket and spent a couple hours scooping out mud and rocks sifting it with screens hoping to find garnets...what I noticed when I came back to shore was my legs were covered in leeches! Im not talking about 2 or 3 leeches...i mean I had around 30 giant blood sucking leeches deeply attached to me...I won't lie my voice is pretty high pitched even during my most masculine times and I let out this scream of terror quickly attracting a group of people who were presumably there to save me. Then a 14 year old boy imitated my scream and laughed at me...needless to say I found no garnets and contracted erysipelas from the leeches. Cool video though! Cheers!

I was born and raised in CA. Live in NH now. I did a lot of gold panning. I'd bring a very small paintbrush with me. It picks those finer pieces of gold right out of the pan, then just touch it to the top of the water in your vial and it falls right in.

That is too neat! Vermont, 1 of 7 states I have yet to visit. (Vermont, New Hampshire, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii) I've had options to visit the latter 2, but sent a younger Peer, so I could go to Philly. But Vermont and New Hampshire, then Washington and and Idaho I must get to these. Vermont is up next. I'm so charged. Fall 2021

Good one! My wife and I used to prospect Vermont and with fairly decent success in fact when the market crashed back in '08 we were broke! No work, no nothing! we took up prospecting in Vermont while we lived in Albany NY, it is true, you will not get rich digging gold in Vermont! But if you know where to look and how to look you can find some pretty decent gold. Garnet is my birth stone as well and we found millions of them! Most are not clear and not really gem quality but some are! Out of the ground they are about 10 bucks a carat but clear ones faceted can get some pretty good money! Garnets are are for the most part fairly round which means that the will roll along the stream bottom. Being that they are fairly heavy they follow the gold. The gold there is in flake form and will fall out of the water flow pretty quick the Garnets will roll farther. So when you find a bunch of them in an area start heading up stream looking for larger rocks. Upstream and downstream of them start at one side of the creek dig down a couple of feet and go right across the stream looking for the gold line and how deep it is from there just follow that line of gold until it runs out or gets better. There is a lot of overburden in those creeks and you can find more then one gold line at different depths. If you look up "Ask Jeff Williams" on youtube he has a video of a stream that he made up and dumped a bunch of gold in to see where the gold would settle out, the results were very interesting! Good luck out there!

I prospect all the time Brad. Pick an inside bend and dig into the bank. Sometimes even higher up the hill out of the water. As others have said bed rock cracks are excellent since they trap gold. You have to discover where the old river channels once were. love the channel and great job! I have watched your channel since the beginning!
@keithnorris8036 ай бұрын
The "glass" that was found could likely be Rhodolite Garnet, commonly found (in NC, at least) alongside Garnet. Also, the cloudiness seen in gemstones is referred to as inclusions. Happy hunting, guys!

Garnets were one of the first gemstones ever fashioned into jewelry. I still think they're beautiful. Have a display piece of N. Carolina Schist w/ Garnets spread across the whole face of it. The closer you get to bedrock or hard clay, the better the gold. For already exposed bedrock, check the cracks and crevices.
