The science is really hard to argue against ... But what never is said or talked about in any meaningful way is the quality of fossil fuels vs renewables ... And the implications for the transition on economic growth and prosperity . What's always ignored is the ideas governing the economy and implicit is the assumption that we can just swap energy systems and continue with business as usual .... Renewables wont run an infinite growth machine in fact nothing will... We need far greater wisdom to acknowledge the limits to the current system and imagine a new one .... For climate change as all environmental issues are symptoms of a deeper problem that isnt even being talked about .... Unless we solve that deeper problem technology will not save us from the consequences of our actions So this guy is literally wasting his time saying this.... 😢

We need to degrowth, downshift, and downscale our consumption and production and overpopulation on a massive global level to even hope to mitigate climate disruption and biodiversity loss. This is akin to a COVID level lockdown for _years_ out. This does mean epic corrections in our economic growth and financial markets. This does mean no more unnecessary flying and driving, tech and fashion fads, wasteful tourism, expansive infrastructure, intensive agriculture and fisheries, greenfield suburbias, deepsea mining for rare Earth metals, single use plastics, etc. etc. etc.!

Thanks for this and all your sterling efforts, Mr Carter. It is wonderful that Secretary General Guterres is so forthright and I agree with the need to act urgently - but I cannot see how we can decarbonise now at the required rate. Falling renewables costs are one thing, but what of storage / intermittency / grid redesign? We cannot just turn off the tap (as we need to do to avoid disaster) because if we do we will be unable to feed and otherwise provision the population we now have: we needed to begin transition in earnest 30 years ago. I'm also not convinced that the green alternatives are that green: they seem to involve their fair share of fossil fuel powered mining, ecological costs and harm to poorly treated local workers and residents. Spent turbines and solar panels are hard to recycle at best and supplies of the rare earths involved extremely limited. I ask in all good faith: am I missing something?
@amberazurescale5617 Жыл бұрын
Congratulations. You've reached the next level, @LittleNoiseBoy. Yes, you're right: the "green tech" that is promised to save the planet is just another fairy tale. On first glance, it seems to go into the right direction. But look at it. Take EVs for example. Noticed how they get larger and larger? They do that in order to enable people to keep their lifestyle. Transporting 100 kg of payload over hundreds of kilometers in a vehicle that weighs 2 tons. This has nothing to do with sustainability at all. This tech is just an excuse, just a greenwashed feel-good way of still continuing the business-as-usual. Which is a society and economy that is based on fossil fuels, the delusion of unlimited growth, resource depletion and greed. And sadly, photovoltaics and other tech isn't better. Every single piece of technology is produced, transported, maintained and operated based on burning fossil fuels and depleting natural resources. Take it to the next level and you'll realize that the planet cannot sustain billions of humans, no way how you put it. It's an illusion, a pipe dream. It's the Jevon's paradox: there is no evidence that resource-efficient technology leads to an overall resource saving. If anything, it leads to more people on the planet which take more and more resources. They can't survive otherwise. You put 10 people into the woods and forbid them to burn anything. How long do you think they'll survive? Ironically, there's 100+ other animal species in that forest who survive without burning stuff. For years. Wanna check out the final level? It's when you realize that it's a dead end. The only feasible way out is a graceful retreat. Try to live your life silently, and try to minimize the damage you're adding up to the pile. Save nature, plants and animals whenever you can. Save every little insect you can find.
