This is the Fossil Gen 5, or the Carlyle HR to be more specific . The company's new refresh to its smartwatch lineup, which might look a lot like its predecessors but is not. Actually not by a significant margin. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and here's our first look.
--
In the WearOS space, Fossil is the company I'm most interested in. They serve as an ODM for many other popular fashion brands that run wearOS, they're also the company that's kept the ball rolling with launches on the latest and greatest hardware, and best of all, we know they're now working closely with Google on the next chapter of this smartwartch platform.

I own a fossil gen 4 explorist watch. I really like using it. The only thing I hate is the battery, it didn't even last me a full day untill I turned off the tilt to wake and used the always on display. Now my battery life has drastically increased. Also some people are mentioning to increase the size of battery, I don't think it's a good idea, because if we increase the size of battery, the width and weight of the watch increases and it might not be as comfortable as the current watches. I just hope that wear os improves and gives us better software and battery optimization.

I've been wearing mine for a couple of weeks since my Gen 4 died the first time I jumped in a swimming pool.... So far I can easily get through a day on a single charge...I generally charge it up before bedtime. It would be nice if the watch menus were duplicated on the WearOS phone app...much easier to make sense of them that way.

They need to go ahead and put some kind of kinetic charging in these watches. That could help battery drain.
@trd8749
@trd8749 5 жыл бұрын
The regular kinetic watch mechanisms pretty much take up the whole case, I don't know how they could fit all of this into such a tiny package. Will be cool if it ever comes to fruition though!
@adaml.5355
@adaml.5355 5 жыл бұрын
That would never work. However, the real solution to battery life is for Qualcomm to make a new processor for wearables. The current processor is 28nm and based on budget phone processors from years ago!
@mstk8845
@mstk8845 5 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking more along the lines of a secondary source along with battery. A hybrid kind of thing. The watch could run on battery mostly when you use it and kinetic when you are not. The tech is out there for almost anything we could think of.
@AlejandroLZuvic
@AlejandroLZuvic 5 жыл бұрын
The amount of energy used by a regular mechanical watch is orders of magnitude smaller than anything with an OLED screen (plus the CPU, sensors, mic, etc). So it’d be a huge mechanism with almost zero gain of battery in practice. What manufacturers need to realize is that a watch isn’t supposed to do all the things your smartphone does plus some more. 99% of the time a watch is there to tell the time, so make it to show the time and nothing else, and then start putting extra functionality. Do we really need to make phone calls from a watch? Make an ultra low refresh rate screen, like one refresh per second, kill all the extra Android services like Google with dictation (do we reaaaaally need to search near restaurants from our watch? Like freaking REALLY?), use Bluetooth LE, kill the AOD when the user is sleeping, etc. I love the Pebble approach: a watch plus basic notifications, plus a timeline with calendar and next events, basic stuff like weather and sleep tracking. Do we really need more?
@denodan
@denodan 4 жыл бұрын
@@mstk8845 well the best battery life is with the ticwatch. 4 days battery, fuel screens one looks like the old school LCD when not on and it's in always on mode. Press a button or screen reverts to OLED. With this duel hybrid screen lasts up to 30 days with watch display only and a out 3 or 4 days usage. Also there is the withings with physical hands and tiny OLED screen or the zetime with physical hands and pressing the button brings up a nice led bright and colorful display. Have one and get 4 days and that's with notifcations always on tracking hr all day and sleep tracking. It really comes down to how often you play with these watches. The first few weeks expect poor battery life as your always playing around. When that wears off expect better battery life.

I just purchased this watch this past Sunday, and I have to say for me and my use over the past week I'm really impressed with the battery life. I have been getting almost a whole day on 1 charge. By the time I get home it has barely gotten below 50% life remaining. Of course I turn off all the battery hogging features (i.e. Wi-Fi and NFC), and this really helps. I have really been impressed on the overall look and feel of the watch its self. This is my 3rd Fossil Smart watch, and I was able to trade in my last one for $100 off of this one.

Hardware progress in the wearables sphere has been excruciatingly slow. As in really slow. That includes the Apple watch, too. The Fossil Gen 5 portfolio brings, 4 years after the launch of my previous watch, the original Huawei Watch, NFC for GooglePay, the ability to go for an occasional swim, built in GPS, a rotating crown, an additional push button, and the swiftness that 1GB RAM provides. Four years. The Huawei watch looked great, had a speaker, enabled taking and placing calls, and sapphire glass. The glass still looks pristine. As for NFC and Google Pay, where I'm located there's no provider accepting Google Pay on smartwatches, only for phones, so it's a may be a useful future feature to me, but isn't yet. The ability to go for a swim, equaling 10,000 strokes in two years, is really only occasional use. Even for excellent swimmers, swimming an average of 1-2 sessions a week, at a stroke length of 10 per 25m, would equal 6 lengths a session. That's a dip, not a swim. For a poor swimmer, using more strokes, even fewer lengths, or fewer times. Furthermore, after 2 years warranty is up. I like the software which is the reason I stay with Google, basically for the Assistant, the Keep app, and other apps not available on other smartwatches. Those four years of excruciatingly slow hardware development goes for the Apple Watch 5 too "oh, gee look, we have always on." Four years ago I thought by now I would have 10ATM, better HRM, more sensors, and 4G LTE compatability, plus at least a 36 hours of hard usage before the battery has to be recharged. Unrealistic, apparently.

Sadly the 3100 isn't the WearOS savior that everyone was looking for. It's the same archaic 32bit, 28 nm process as the 2100. Heck, it's literally just the 2100 with a modern low power coprocessor that indeed does offer power savings with a caveat. What's the caveat you ask? It's literally to not use your watch or perform any cpu power hungry tasks. If you do any of the following the high powered cores take over and the battery savings are nonexistent that point because it's essentially like using the 2100. Hopefully Qualcoom gets off their ass and makes a new 64 bit chip with a 10nm process or less soon!

Nice review... Really like my Fossil gen4 explorist. Awesome hardware. I can't stand WearOS though. I get about 1 update every 1.5 months, since Jan 2019. All but 1 of those updates crashed a critical function or two on the watch. One month notifications would get wiped, next month the touch screen locked out, next month bluetooth would disconnect, month after that text message notifications would get nixed...etc...etc. Its to the point I really don't wear it that much. Its just too unreliable. I just can never predict when the next WearOS update will release and remotely kill my watch. Its not me or my phone. In parallel with the gen4 explorist I have also owned an Amazfit Stratos since Jan 2019. That has been a complete opposite experience. Reliable, and proven to be a very dependable accessory to my phone. It has gotten 4-5 updates and not one of them has crashed something on the watch. Its a very simple watch, but in this case I really think less is more... I can easily tolerate less features if it gains me reliability.

I agree with you on all aspects...however, of the 5 Wear OS devices I've owned, one driving factor never seems to change: the OS is laggy, glitchy and just plain makes the whole experience of using a smart watch more of a pain than a good experience. I MUCH prefer the Samsung Tizen watches, but that isn't to say that Wear OS is incapable of beating Samsung. Notifications are clearly better on Wear OS, along with Google Assistant and the ability to customize the generally weak vibration are the 3 main areas where they are superior. But the one thing TIzen has never done to me where Google has is make me frustrated that the device won't lock up, lag or any number of other frustrations. They are infinitely snappier and the battery life just kills Wear OS. I haven't sworn off buying another watch forever, but until they can just fix those major lag and glitch issues, I can't see myself getting another one.

@@jeffgomske6920 the lock ups and lags are ram. 768mb watches fixed it 90% of the way so I'm presuming these 1GB ram devices will. However with the glitches I agree. It could be less buggy and the battery life sorely needs to be addressed. Google keep adding in battery features with every new major OS release but they don't do anything. It's all a front. Until sales go up heaps it makes no sense for Qualcomm to give a shit and spend money on R&D to make a good Chip. It's all just lip service.

I've owned several Wear OS devices (two of which had 768mb RAM) never noticed ANY smoother, well, anything. It's obvious you're a Wear OS fan, and that's fine, but the problem goes well beyond simply adding additional RAM.

@@jeffgomske6920 yeah and you gotta check your eyesight. It IS more smoother. I have two Wear24, ZTE quartz , fossil gen 3, fossil gen 4, misfit Vapor. I Check the wearos Reddit daily and one of the authors of their watch spreadsheet. Others agree with me on there that for most daily operations 768mh and above smooths out a lot of the lag when swiping etc. Google have their issues but their balls are against the wall with WearOS til Qualcomm helps out with a chip.

Yes, this feature is supported in the Sport, Gen 4, and gen 5 at least. I haven't used older models so I can't speak to them, but it's definitely available in the above models. If you're looking for the setting, it can be found in the Android Wear OS app Advanced Settings from your smartphone.

It depends. Do you want a fitness tracker with 3 day battery life, that also happens to do notifications? Then go with the Galaxy Watch. But if you're looking for something with a ton of apps where it can be used instead of your phone in most situations but needs to be recharged every night, then the Fossil Carlyle is a good option.

I bought many smart watches over the years, but keep going back to my Casio Pro Trek WSD-F20. I simply love almost everything about it. It's rugged, has dual layer display, and battery life (though not the best one l tried) is very good (lasts me around 2 days). I also love that the 2nd layer display can last for weeks in timepiece mode, so I can still use it as a normal watch even when the battery dies! The newer WSD-F30 is out with some improvements, but sadly the battery got smaller, so I'm skipping that.

So basically if I get a wear os watch, I still can't give up my Xiaomi MI Band 3 as that's the one that does sleep tacking and the watch would have to go on the charger at the end of the day. That's kinda sad... But, I would still get one... I just need to decide wether Snapdragon 3100 is something to really look for or if I can get away with a Ticwatch C.
