About twenty years ago I was in Prague on business. I wandered off for a break from work into the Old Town Square where there was a choir festival underway. One male voice choir performed this and I found I was reduced to tears within its first verse. I can hardly listen now without an embarrassing reoccurrence.

Oh Finland, look, your dawn has come The danger of night has been exiled And the skylark of morning sings in the brightness As if the firmament is reverberating The powers of night, the light of morning already won over Your dawn comes, oh birthland Oh arise, Finland, lift up high Your head, wreathed with great memories Oh arise, Finland, you showed the world That you exiled slavery And that you didn't bend under oppression Your dawn has come, birthland (or something like that)

Oh Finland look the day at last is dawning Your night of danger now is driven away The morning skylark in the sunlight soaring Seems heaven’s song’s come to greet this day As night-time powers are banished by the morning A new day dawns in our native land Oh Finland rise and lift your head to glory And proudly wear your memories’ shining crown Oh Finland rise and tell to all the story Of how the yoke of slavery was thrown And since you would not bend beneath oppressiom This new day dawns for our native land.

Finnish lyrics of the Finlandia hymn (V. A. Koskenniemi), translated: O Finland, see: Thy day is dawning The threat of night has already been banished And the lark of morning sings in the brightness As if the vault of heaven itself was singing The reign of night is already being conquered by the whiteness of morning Thy day is dawning, O fatherland O rise, Finland, raise up high Thy head, wreathed by great memories O rise, Finland, Thou showed the world That Thou banished enslavement And that Thou didn't bend under repression Thy morning has begun, fatherland

Here is the link to the women's choir: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqfUZZ-Ppd2Lis0 I particularly appreciate that they chose to sing it in the middle of the Hague.
