Truly talented comedian. When you can walk to the podium and not say a word, and look at the person and they start cracking up knowing what's about to happen next, that's a wonderful gift.

"Yoooouuo..." Who else could have given Johnny Carson a whack other than Foster Brooks. I'm glad we have these clips to share with the younger ones who never knew the world we once did.

It's almost as fun watching the reaction of Dean and others as it is watching Foster. When you get folks like Martin, Rickles and others laughing their keisters off, you know you're funny.

Other "old school" comedians I remember were Rodney Dangerfield, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers.

Yes, Rick - not to mention when they'd have some of the older comics who had heard and seen it all, like Jack Benny, George Burns, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, etc. I'd imagine those guys would be even harder to impress and make laugh! :-)

I get the impression that the 'laughter' is added after the dialogue, a sad reflection of the American idea that an audience needs prompting of when to laugh,funny or not, but even sadder that the rest of the world now suffers from the 'Canned Laughter' syndrome that has totally destroyed real comedy!

Can't believe Johnny didn't care for Foster Brooks

Johnny was quite a drinker himself; maybe Foster's act hit a little too close to home. Loved them both, though, warts and all.

It sure is, and we can probably thank rabid political correctness and a largely dumbed-down educational (indoctrinational) system for a lot of that.
@jml-rj5re5 жыл бұрын
@@TakersMissy Folks, these roast were on NBC in the 70s. Cursing was not allowed. The 7 words banned and all. So they liked to ride the edge with innuendo...which was a gold of a joke, btw. Foster Brooks could set up a punch line. Only Norm Macdonald has anything approaching that skill level.

To all of us Brooks fans, I've seen so many but I think the funniest of all is the one where he roasts Sammy Davis Jr. You've got to see this. I've never seen Don Rickles lose it so much. Sammy was enjoying the skit so much he even got up and hugged Brooks. Carson didn't even bother to stand up. Here's the link to Sammy's roast: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp7Gh2OepNVsj8U

That was great. And seeing all those now gone greats and remember what it was like back then, well, they were better times. But Foster was great. When you make the great comedians laugh, and laugh hard, you're doing it right. I'm really glad I was alive back then to see all these people in action, live, on TV and/or in movies. truly greats in their field. There's some really funny people today to be sure, but those greats from that past era, they were clever people,clever in how they could get across some very "blue" humor without actually being "blue", just using well crafted innuendo and tone of voice to get the point across. And, they were funnier than had they used the kind of direct language (expletives and obscenities). By having to sidestep the direct route, so to speak,it made their humor all the funnier. As many people have said,we'll never see the like of them again.

I'm sitting in a truck on a long layover waiting to get a load to head back to Michigan at a ridiculous hour of the morning Wednesday morning. I started watching these videos one after another and what an absolute riot of memories! Every one of these has different people that I remember and actors and Comedians and singers that will never be matched again I'm afraid. None of them for us old enough to remember them will ever be outdone. It wasn't an age of innocense...but It truly enjoyed the laughter in a clean unfiltered way that is unknown to the generations of the 80s and younger.

I always had enormous respect for Foster Brooks. Any actor will tell you that playing a drunk is difficult, and Brooks would actually carefully plan out ahead of time what he would do with each line, to find the best way to use the drunk "accent" to maximize the potential of the line ~ which then required enormous focus when he was underway ~ very draining ~ but he was excellent at it.
