There is a video on KZbin of John Hampson from Nine Days who is now an English teacher talking about his days as a rock singer and having to perform their hit song Absolutely (Story of a girl) four or five times a day at various radio stations while on tour. Could be the same case here. It eventually turns into a job like any other job. You look at the touring schedules of some of these bands and it is impressive how much they perform. Some do 20 to 25 days a month.

That's to make it sound different. Drummers often use a folded piece of toiletpaper to 'enhance' the sound of their drums (especially the snare). I guess he just didn't have any TP with him? haha, or maybe he used his wallet because that obviously has a lot more impact on the sound then a little piece of toilet paper or tape.
